http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/08/023207

[0]robstah writes "An alpha release of the next generation Debian
installer (Debian-Installer) has been [1]announced. Debian-Installer is     an actively developed replacement for the older and now rather     delapidated boot-floppies installer. This alpha release is available     for i386 only as ports to other platforms are not yet significantly     mature. Volunteers are requested to test this new installer and help     contribute to Sarge, the next release of Debian GNU/Linux." Now's the     time to complain if you want to be heard. Links

[0]dJCL writes "I noticed at [1]BlackMask.com that the Adobe

Journal of Applied Physics, NASA, and the Hydrino http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/07/2252259

[0]Erik Baard writes "I wanted to bring you the last on a story that
was slashdotted in June: [1]NASA's investigation of the 'hydrino'     rocket. In June I reported for wired.com that the NASA Institute for     Advanced Concepts was funding a six-month study of rockets propeled by     plasmas created by BlackLight Power Inc. The company claims that energy     is released when it shrinks hydrogen atoms, bringing the electron     closer into its nucleus than thought possible. Here's the scoop: the     researcher told NASA that *something* was indeed generating plasmas     with more kinetic energy than would be expected for the power input.     And the kicker is that BlackLight founder Randell Mills scored a paper     about his plasmas in the mainstream Journal of Applied Physics -- after     a few years of following this bizarre startup, that floored me." [0]PinchDuck writes "Check out this site to get a tour of [1]London
Underground stations that have been abandoned during the century+     history of the commuter system. You can apparently still get to some of     them! (though not by taking the Tube, obviously). I wish I had found     this site 2 weeks ago, when I went to London, but now my geeky     explorations must wait until my next visit (having just flown back in     to Detroit today)."

Gobe Productive GPL Release In Danger

[0]Ian Chamberlain writes "[1]Drobe, the leading RISC OS portal, has
[2]reported the release of [3]Iyonix, the first desktop computer to use

Clothes Make the Network
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/07/1812204

[0]Roland Piquepaille writes "Howard Rheingold is looking at how
"wearable computers create ad-hoc wireless communities." Here is the     main idea, introduced by Gerd Kortuem, a 38-year-old assistant     professor, who recently moved to Lancaster University in England from     the University of Oregon's Wearable Computing Lab. "As he sees it, the     crowds who surround us every day constitute a huge waste of social     capital. If you live in a city for instance, there are many who pass     within a few yards of you each day who could give you a ride home, buy     an item you're trying to sell, or consider you as dating material.     Dynamic networking makes it possible to tap those resources through a     momentary alliance among transient interest groups." Some thoughts on the future of 'geek lobbying' http://newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=02/12/03/0241253

  • By Robin 'Roblimo' Miller -This is a cynical but realistic view of the U.S. regulatory and lawmaking process that will make you sad -- and will show you why "Geek Activism" projects must be ongoing efforts if they are going to succeed. I'm sure things are similar in other countries, but I know the U.S. system best so that's the one I'll talk about here.
