Psst! Eight Bits Gets You "The Two Towers" In China http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/10/0443249

rocodipoco writes "CNN reports on this [0] article about DVDs of "The     Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" were available in Shanghai two weeks     ago for about $1 a pop, according to one Western film industry     executive who visited that city. The film opens in North America on     December 18. Interviewed at the CineAsia movie convention, the     executive said as many as 40 street vendors were openly offering DVDs     outside a Shanghai mall; he declined their offers, and thus can't     verify the quality of the counterfeit copies. I personally want to wait     for the movie to hit the big screen...it's all about the suspense. What     do others think?"

Mono Ships ASP.NET server
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/10/0138245

[0]Miguel de Icaza writes "We have just released the new version of
[1]Mono the new version includes a working version of ASP.NET. The
release includes a sample web server that "hosts" the ASP.NET runtime     (it can be hosted anywhere, for instance in Apache, with mod_haydn).     The web features of ASP.NET would not be very useful without the     support of a backing database. The new version of Mono includes     database providers for Oracle, MS SQL, Sybase, ODBC, OleDB, Gnome Data     Access, SqLite, MySQL and of course, Postgres. The C# compiler is now     37% faster due to some nice optimizations on the JIT engine and in our     class libraries. You can use it to develop GUI applications using
[2]Gtk#. Screenshots for [3]mPhoto and the [4]GUI debugger (which can
debug both JITed apps and native applications). " Links

Life Confirmed At Extreme Depths
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/09/222206

[0]SEWilco writes "A few years ago the life forms around deep-ocean
thermal vents were a surprise. Now ancient bacteria [1]alive in rock 2     miles down have been found. The story is in the [2]San Francisco     Chronicle. It is also at [3]Nature.Com, but that server is already     rejecting connects. Other bacteria survived frozen in the pressures of     an ocean 100 miles deep. This increases the known limits of where life     can exist on any planet. [4]Thomas Gold undoubtedly is not surprised at
[5]hot, deep bacteria living on hydrogen."

An Unbiased Analysis of Gun Crime vs. Gun Control? http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/08/2135229

lyapunov asks: "I have been trying to become more learned on the issues     surrounding gun control and crime. I have had quite a time searching     the internet for references about these issues. Practically everything     that I have found has been written for, or is a study funded by, one of     the groups that hold extreme viewpoints on the subject, e.g. the NRA or     the Brady Foundation. The same holds true for references that I have     found in our library. I was wondering if any of the members of the     slashdot community have come across articles that are objective in     dealing with these subjects, and I would also ask what ideas the     members of this community have about this issue and what FACTS they can     offer to support their ideas."

Newsforge Reports
Where, oh where is SAIR?
http://newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=02/12/07/1834215

  • by Tina Gasperson - The SAIR Linux/GNU certification body has been keeping a low profile since it was absorbed into Thomson Learning. Not only that, but Thomson has been tight-lipped about the program - incommunicado. Whether that's due to typical corporate confusion about who's babysitting what, or to a deliberate effort, we're not sure. But a little-known .org has surfaced to rescue SAIR, and it is backed by some biggies who have a stake in ...

True to Largo's "City of Progress" motto, these guys have not been standing still. Now they're talking about Linux-based terminals in all the city's police cars. Microsoft has tried -- and failed -- to bring them into the proprietary fold. And, possibly most important, we ...
