Federal Government: Still Crazy About Data-Mining http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/03/02/1246225 Jason writes "Data-mining is all the rage in D.C. these days. Not satisfied with Poindexter's "Total Information Awareness" (TIA) and then Transportation Security Agency's Computer Assisted Passenger Prescreening System II (CAPPS II), two more data-mining programs have recently attracted attention from critics: the Foreign Terrorist Tracking Task Force (FTTTF) and the Terrorism Threat Integration Center (TTIC). What is FTTTF?"

U.S. Army's Future Combat System Will Run Linux http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/03/02/1241236 "In 2001 Boeing was chosen to be the lead system integrator for the Army's Future Combat System ... a little known fact is that the OS for FCS will be Linux"
Next from Open Source: Killer Apps?
"INEVITABLE MIGRATION." In a sense, the systems integrators that often implement big software installations have already set the table for low-cost, open-source applications: Increasingly, these service companies "give away" software -- or at least include its cost in long-term maintenance and outsourcing contracts. Red Hat to offer Linux training and professional certification programs in Saudi Arabia http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/03/02/017257 Red Hat, Inc. History takes a Big Mac-sized byte out of Microsoft http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/03/01/198238 An unwritten historical law says that an empire is at its most vulnerable at the apex of its greatest power and influence. People don't live long enough to see the parabola of political empires but the life cycle of businesses is comparable. Take les Big Macs for instance — McDonald's and Microsoft.
