Trigun Coming to Cartoon Network
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/21/2018240

[0]MoeMoe writes "Well I was just watching Cartoon Network and it looks
like Trigun will begin airing in just a couple of weeks. The CN website gives a brief description [1]here" [2]Trigun is among my favorite anime series. It gets a little crazy by the end, but for the most part it's pretty lighthearted fun, with some great action. CN sure seems to love the Anime Sci Fi Westerns. I wonder if they'll carry some of the fluffier stuff besides Tenchi. Love Hina would be a fun choice. Or Excel Saga.

Microsoft: We Make Hackers Obsolete
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/21/1524213

bahamat writes "[0]This article explains how Microsoft was forced to yank a magazine ad by the Advertising Standards Authority. In the ad MS claims that they'll make the [1]hacker extinct. The tagline reads "Microsoft software is carefully designed to keep your company's valuable information in, and unauthorised people and viruses out. Which means that your data couldn't really be safer, even if you kept it in a safe. Which is great news for the survival of your company. But tragic news for hackers." Does MS really think that people are too stupid to remember [2]what happened less than 2 months ago? My favorite quote from the article is "Clarke described Microsoft's claim as "laughable". "

Brian Hook Interview
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/21/147235

A reader writes:"I just read this very in-depth [0]interview with Brian Hook on a site called [1]Curmudgeon Gamer. Hook used to work for id Software (Quake 2 and 3) and later for Verant (Everquest) and he apparently worked on Glide for the old 3DFX cards. Now he runs his own smaller game company called [2]Pyrogon. In the interview he talks about development styles of Q2 and Q3, MMORPGs, the lessons of 3DFX, and development of cross-platform games like his [3]Candy Cruncher (which is available for MacOSX and Linux!). He even gets into some criticism of modern games and the life of a smaller game developer. Lengthy read, but lots of stuff to think about there since he tells it like he sees it."

Newsforge Reports
'Lock in Software,' not 'Proprietary Software' http://newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/03/18/1230223

  • By Brendan Scott - In July last year I wrote a paper which argued that the total cost of ownership of free software would, in the long run, always be lower than that of equivalent software created under different models. One of the problems I grappled with when writing that paper was how to name those different models. At the time I adopted a term which appeared to be used widely, that of “proprietary software”. I now ...

What if Microsoft decides to go Open Source? http://newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/03/17/1233239

  • By Donald K. Rosenberg - People often speculate about Microsoft's bringing out a Linux version of Office, but everyone assumes that they would never try to Open Source their products -- after all, Microsoft is the acme of proprietary software. But they have begun to twirl the seven veils lately. While Microsoft's critics denounce Shared Source as a sham, at least it's a move away from binary-only, and although its rule is "look, don't touch" ...
