GDDR2 Emerging As A Real Standard
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/24/0154205

An anonymous reader writes "I [0]noticed here that EE Times is reporting that the [1]GDDR2 standard is finally becoming a reality. Both NVIDIA and ATI's latest chips offer support. ATI helped spearhead the initiative to develop the standard. The significance of this is great, since it may very well mean that every 18 months or so a new graphics memory standard will be released." Links

Anything Box Releases An Album To Share

Do you need more help?X

cats writes "[0]Anything Box, the synthpop band from the 80's who had a hit with 'Living in Oblivion' have released an introspective albumn in mp3 format under a 'freeware' style license. Anyone who has ever seen these guys perform know they are just a bunch of nice people trying to make ends meet as musicians. I had the opportunity to hang with Claude before his show in NJ at The Pipe back in 1998. He had some interesting asides about how the music business in general operates. They manipulate the artists' work as well as take huge cuts of musicians' profits. The album is available via [1]download as one big zip file including artwork and is in mp3 format. Very cool." Links

The Thin Line Between Reality and Video Games http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/23/2144215

[0]Boomzilla writes "San Jose Mercury news is carrying [1]an article
about a 2-year-old Silicon Valley start-up called [2]Keyhole and their product Earthviewer. The Mountain View company makes interactive 3-D maps that fuse high-resolution satellite and aerial imagery, elevation data, GPS coordinates, and overlay information about cities and businesses to deliver a streaming, 3D map of the entire globe. Since the start of the war, many news networks have been using the maps to zoom in on, over and around the Iraqi landscape to help viewers see where the war is being fought. Keyhole is financed by Sony Broadband Entertainment, graphics-chip maker [3]Nvidia and others. Keyhole uses satellite images, aerial photos and other data to create 3-D maps that perform much like high-quality video games. Way cool!" Links

A Hotter Sun May Be Contributing To Global Warming http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/23/2038250

[0]no reason to be here writes "The sun seems to be getting hotter.
Total radiation output has increased .05% per decade since the 1970s.
[1] This article over at Yahoo! News has the scoop. Though .05% may not

Newsforge Reports
'Lock in Software,' not 'Proprietary Software' http://newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/03/18/1230223

  • By Brendan Scott - In July last year I wrote a paper which argued that the total cost of ownership of free software would, in the long run, always be lower than that of equivalent software created under different models. One of the problems I grappled with when writing that paper was how to name those different models. At the time I adopted a term which appeared to be used widely, that of “proprietary software”. I now ...

What if Microsoft decides to go Open Source? http://newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/03/17/1233239

  • By Donald K. Rosenberg - People often speculate about Microsoft's bringing out a Linux version of Office, but everyone assumes that they would never try to Open Source their products -- after all, Microsoft is the acme of proprietary software. But they have begun to twirl the seven veils lately. While Microsoft's critics denounce Shared Source as a sham, at least it's a move away from binary-only, and although its rule is "look, don't touch" ...
