Firebird Name Debate Enters a New Stage
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/18/0344251

An anonymous reader writes "As many readers will know, [0]mozilla.org     was asked to change the name for their standalone browser, [1]Phoenix     as [2]another browser had the same name. After [3]months of discussion,     the new name was [4]announced as [1]Mozilla Firebird. Despite the new     name being approved by [5]AOL Legal, supporters of the [6]FirebirdSQL     database were quick to object (though the name is also used by [7]many     other people). A coincidentally named supporter of FirebirdSQL,
[8]IBPhoenix, put up a slightly immature [9]request for their readers
to participate in mass posting campaign targetting mozilla.org     developers' email accounts, newsgroups and even forums at independent     sites such as [10]MozillaZine and Slashdot. FirebirdSQL's official site     later [6]reiterated this message. However, IBPhoenix have now declared     this shock-and-awe stage of their campaign over, heralding it a     success. Their [11]second stage calls for a more focussed email protest     at just two of mozilla.org's members: Mitchell Baker (mozilla.org's     leader) and Asa Dotzler (announcer of the name change). In addition,     they ask their readers to move away from 'derogatory messages' and to     show more 'courtesy'. Unsurprisingly, the beleaguered admins of     affected sites such as MozillaZine have [12]welcomed this change of     direction. This is getting very interesting!" Links

Should You Hire a Hacker?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/18/0211238

[0]fabioj writes "[1]Business Week has an article about [2]today's
debate at the RSA Security Conference held at the Moscone Center     attended by Kevin Mitnick and his 1995 trial prosecutor, Christopher     Painter. Interesting to note that Painter doesn't see Kevin Mitnick's     experiences as a deterrent for the 'up-and-coming technology workforce'     to criminally hack."

Genderplay in Videogames
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/18/0127234

[0]thenovacrisis writes "[1]Game Girl Advance has an interesting
article about the [2]various female characters in videogames. She talks     about the important balance between alienation and identification, the     Aesthetics of Sexy Girls, and various MMORPGs. An interesting read for     all." A lot of games are compared, and issues raised. Good food for     thought for character design.

DARPA Grant Cancelled for OpenBSD and U-Penn? http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/17/2332233

[2] University of Pennsylvania has been cancelled (?) immediately and
without warning. See the full story in [3]Theo's email and on

Are Rebates Scandalous?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/17/2236211

[0]theodp asks: "Motley Fool offers a dead-on take on the [1]computer
mail-in rebate fulfillment process--Once I receive your 'claim,' I will     begin to 'process' it. Assuming that you filled out all the information     correctly, and assuming nothing is missing, and assuming your claim     doesn't get lost somehow, and if you call or write a few times to check     on your claim's status, then I will mail your check within 10 to 12     weeks. Maybe. Or maybe it'll be four to six months. Or never." Real-time PC access on your PDA
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/17/189205

[0]Brooks P. writes "As seen in [1]this story on [2]The Register,
[3]Sproqit Technologies creates software that allows you to access your
desktop apps in real time over the Internet. No more synchronization.     This is accomplished with a Desktop Agent that runs on your (Windows     for now) PC, and a 200k Companion running on the PDA. The Desktop Agent     uses plug-ins to connect to the apps running on the PC, and the SDK     used to develop plug-ins is free. Oh, and the whole thing uses 128-bit     SSL for security and works over any connection method: 802.11, modem,     cell phone, etc."

Reasoning Your Way to Linux
http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/04/17/2037211

All open source programmers believe in their heart of hearts that open     source is not only the best way to write software, it produces the best     possible software. It's a point that's been argued endlessly, but until     recently there hasn't been any hard proof from an non-partisan third     party demonstrating that open source code was actually superior to     closed source. Now, thanks to research     (http://www.reasoning.com/downloads/opensource.html) done ...

Why Linux Still Gives Me Grief
http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/04/17/1535235

Several days ago I wrote a rather scathing article about my utter     dismay and disappoint with Mandrake 9.1 and by association, Linux as a     whole. Since then I have had many many flames and equally as many     agreeing emails (is there a simple opposite word for flame?) Since then     I have been trying, really really trying to get my system working     fully. But time and again I'm coming up against the same brick wall of     (un)usability, computer esotericism ...
