Nuke-Lobbing
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/19/2259256

SlideGuitar writes "The following is a fascinating article about how     the Navy in the 1950s, wanting to assure that it had a carrier based     nuclear force, used A1 Skyraider (single engine propellor driven     aircraft) to [0]lob nuclear bombs using a manuever called the "goofy     loop" (read the article.) The goofy loop put about seven miles between     them and a Mark 7 nuclear device at detonation. The pilots knew that     (1) they couldn't get far enough away to survive, and (2) if they did     survive there probably wouldn't be a carrier to go back to anyway.     There are lots of emails from pilots who did the manuever and what they     thought about the whole business."

Building a Bigger Search Engine
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/19/1916209

[0]skreuzer writes "Wired is running a [1]story about a distributed web
crawler called [2]Grub. People who choose to download and run the     client will assist in building the Web's largest, most accurate     database of URLs. This database will be used to improve existing search     engines' results by increasing the frequency at which sites are crawled     and indexed. Conceivably, Grub's distributed network could enable state     information to be gathered on every document on the Internet, each and     every day."

Open Source Experiment Management Software? http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/19/2352232

Alea asks: "I do a lot of empirical computer science, running new     algorithms on hundreds of datasets, trying many combinations of     parameters, and with several versions of many pieces of software.     Keeping track of these experiments is turning into a nightmare and I     spend an unreasonable amount of time writing code to smooth the way.     Rather than investing this effort over and over again, I have been     toying with writing a framework to manage everything, but don't want to     reinvent the wheel. I can find commercial solutions (often specific to     a particular domain) but does anyone know of an open source effort?     Failing that, does anyone have any thoughts on such a beast?"

KamehamehaWarrior writes "Peter B. bash programmable completion 20030419 (Stable) http://freshmeat.net/releases/120109/

Since v2.04, bash has allowed you to intelligently program and extend     its standard completion behavior to achieve complex command lines with     just a few keystrokes. Imagine typing ssh [Tab] and being able to     complete on hosts from your ~/.ssh/known_hosts files. Or typing man 3     str [Tab] and getting a list of all string handling functions in the     UNIX manual. mount system: [Tab] would complete on all exported     file-systems from the host called system, while make [Tab] would     complete on all targets in Makefile. This project was conceived to     produce programmable completion routines for the most common Linux/UNIX     commands, reducing the amount of typing sysadmins and programmers need     to do on a daily basis.
