'With the historic creation of the     Department of Homeland Security, the transfer of many of the     responsibilities from the Critical Infrastructure Protection Board and     the release of the strategy, I have decided to retire after     approximately 31 years of public service and return to the private     sector,' Schmidt said in his April 21 e-mail." Half Life 2 To Appear At E3

[0]MonsieurEvil writes "Valve announced today
(http://www.planethalflife.com) that [1]the long-awaited Half-Life 2     will be appearing at E3, and will be released this year. The NDA for     press is supposed to end on April 28th, and quite a few magazines are     already hyping their scoops. Hopefully all the teen-angst types that     show their superiority through decrying this as vaporware can now     listen to their elders..."

Windows Server 2003 Is A Small Step Forward http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/22/0018212

[0]b17bmbr writes "[1]According to eWeek, 'The release of Windows
Server 2003 is a small step forward for the platform -- an effort that     really should be considered Windows 2000 Server Second Edition. With     the exception of Internet Information Services 6.0, there aren't any     far-reaching or fundamental changes in the product.' And from CNet
[2]Microsoft prepares Windows Server ads, 'The ads are geared toward IT

Home-Grown TiVo Stories?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/21/2238215

PolyDwarf writes "I'm in the process of figuring out how I'm going to     build a homegrown TiVo machine (i.e. a computer sitting next to or in     my home electronics stack). My question for is "What's worked best for     you?" Most solutions I've researched are great if you have regular     cable. However, satellite systems and digital cable boxes seem to     present a special challenge, in that the software on the PC needs to     know about an IR connector that is then hooked up to the front of the     digital cable/satellite box. Who has done a solution like what I'm     researching? What cases/processors/memory/TV Card/IR     transceiver/OS/software/etc worked out for you? Did the end result     justify the pain and hassle?"

Trusted Debian v1.0 Released
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/21/1913251

[0]Peter Busser writes "The Trusted Debian project releases its first
[1]official release, v1.0. Its main focus is solving most (but unlikely
all) buffer overflow problems. It features PaX, a kernel patch which     does several things. It tries to keep code and data apart, it     randomizes stack, code, heap and shared libraries, it does strict     mprotect() checking and it also protects the kernel. Trusted Debian     also uses the stack protector patch for GCC developed by Hiroaki Etoh     at IBM, which adds overflow checks to C/C++ code. It also features     FreeS/WAN and RSBAC, an extensive access control framework. More     information is available from the [0]website. There is also a
[2]demonstration available for the special capabilities of this
    release."

"Super-DMCA" Bills In Tennessee and Arkansas http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/21/188250

[0]David Turner writes "Tomorrow, Tennessee's Senate Judiciary
Committee is holding a hearing on two nearly identical DMCA-like bills.     These bills threaten personal privacy, anonymity, and security     research. [1]SB 213 and [2]HB457 are similar to state laws [3]     introduced all over the country by the MPAA. Despite [4]amendments, the     bills still threaten digital freedom. [5]Last month, twenty people     showed up at the Massachusetts public hearing, and effectively opposed     the one MPAA lobbyist. If you attend, speak from notes rather than     simply reading a statement (but you may be able to submit written     testimony). Please come to Legislative Plaza in Nashville, rooms 12 and     14 at 3:30pm." And [6]Kraken137 writes "The House and Senate of the
[7]Arkansas state legislature have passed the MPAA's [8]"Super-DMCA"
Bill, and it is now sitting on the Governor's desk awaiting his     signature. It's not too late to convince him to veto this bill!     Arkansas residents are urged to contact the Governor's office to     express their opposition to this violation of rights. The ever-vigilant
[9]EFF has a page where residents can [10]send a fax to Governor
Huckabee's office to let their voices be heard. Remember, paper and     phone calls make more of a difference than emails!" Links

  • Guido Sohne - Accra, Ghana - Working as a software developer in Web Africa can be a trying experience. I remember the days when, less than two months into starting a new company, we had to endure the infamous "load-shedding" -- a practice of cutting off electricity to whole sections of the city in order to conserve power. Never mind that you need electricity to work and you need to work to eat. Nowadays things are much better -- they just cut ...

DIBS 0.8
http://freshmeat.net/releases/120335/

Can't find what you're looking for?X

Since disk drives are cheap, backup should be cheap too. Of course it     does not help to mirror your data by adding more disks to your own     computer because a fire, flood, power surge, etc. could still wipe out     your local data center. Instead, you should give your files to peers     (and in return store their files) so that if a catastrophe strikes your     area, you can recover data from surviving peers. The Distributed     Internet Backup System (DIBS) is designed to implement this vision.

One can search and browse these actions to learn about the     design of an application.

DSPAM 2.3
http://freshmeat.net/releases/120324/

DSPAM is a server-side anti-spam agent for UNIX email servers. It     masquerades as the email server's local delivery agent and     filters/learns SPAM using a Bayesian statistical approach which     provides an administratively maintenance-free, self-learning Anti-Spam     service. Each email is broken down into its most interesting tokens,     each assigned a spam probability. All probabilities are then combined     to produce a statistical probability of spam. This approach, applied to     a mature corpus of email, has the potential to yield a 99.5% success     rate with only 0.03% chance of false positives.

fwsnort 0.1
http://freshmeat.net/releases/120296/

Confused? Frustrated?X

fwsnort translates snort rules into an equivalent iptables ruleset. By     making use of the iptables string match module, fwsnort can detect     application layer signatures which exist in many snort rules. fwsnort     adds a --hex-string option to iptables, which allows snort rules that     contain hex characters to be input directly into iptables rulesets     without modification. In addition, fwsnort makes use of the     IPTables::Parse Perl module in order to (optionally) restrict the snort     rule translation to only those rules that specify traffic that could     potentially be allowed through an existing iptables policy.
