Slashdot
The Spirit Of Unix vs. The Unix Trademark http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/13/0324226

[0]BSD Forums writes "This article conveys the message that [1]Linux,
BSD, and Darwin continue what Unix started. InfoWorld's Tom Yager says that several readers took him to task for referring to Linux, BSD, and OS X as Unix. He feels that Unix has a rich legacy that deserves to be preserved and accurately conveyed to new generations of computer scientists. It rattles many of us to see that the operating systems that best exemplify Unix traditions today aren't Unix at all." Links

RIAA Apologizes for Incorrect Infringement Notice http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/13/031200

theradixhunter writes "News.com is [0]reporting that the RIAA has apologized to the [1]Pennsylvania State University for sending a threatening letter making an incorrect allegations of copyright violations. It appears that the automated system that the RIAA uses picked the term "Usher" and the extenstion ".mp3" on an FTP site hosting the work of Professor Emeritus Peter Usher and falsely assumed that the files were songs by the musician [2]Usher. The university accepted the apology saying "that this was an honest mistake by the recording industry" and Spokesman Tysen Kendig said Penn State "remains committed to working closely with the RIAA"." Linux Powers First Handheld Software Radio http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/12/203225

An anonymous reader writes "According to [0]this article at LinuxDevices.com, [1]Vanu Technology is demonstrating what it claims represents the world's first handheld 'software radio' using an iPAQ PDA running Linux at a [2]conference in Washington DC today. Vanu apparently has implemented the signal processing functions on the iPAQ's XScale processor, and their software uses POSIX APIs to make it platform independent. Software radios implement multiple radio standards and frequency bands in software, rather than hardware. A standard iPAQ expansion pack houses the radio transceiver." Links

ATI Radeon 9800 Pro vs. NVidia GeForce 5900 http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/13/012221

[0]HardcoreGamer writes "Today [1]ATI shipped its Radeon 9800 Pro 256
MB DDR-2 card in time for E3 and [2]nVidia announced the NV35-based GeForce 5900 which will be available in June. Early tests seem to say that while [3]nVidia edges ahead of ATI in [4]specific areas, overall
[5]ATI still has the better card. The caveat is that the next
generation of DirectX 9-based games (like Doom 3 and Half-Life 2,
[6]demonstrated with ATI at E3) will truly determine which is the
better card. Lots of coverage at [3]PC Magazine, [4]PC World, The Register ([7]ATI) ([8]nVidia), [5]ExtremeTech, [9]InternetNews, and
[10]Forbes/Reuters. Either way, at $450-$500, serious gamers are about
to get another serious dent in their wallets." Links

against the [3]Spamhaus Project, (and other anti-spam sites) seeking to prevent the publication of the anonymous plaintiffs' IP addresses in the Spamhaus Block List (SBL). Environmental Costs of Computer Use?

[0]arhines asks: "I'm working on a little research project to figure
out what the environmental cost of heavy technological reliance is, and want any suggestions Slashdot has for factors to consider. [1]My school has started requiring students to own and use laptops in all of their classes, under the pretext of saving paper. Having read about the

Intel Reveals Itanium 2 Glitch
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/12/221251

NeoChichiri writes "News.com is running on an article about [0]glitches in Intel's Itanium 2 chips. Even though it doesn't affect all chips, they have still stopped shipments of the new 450 Servers until the problem is resolved. Apparently it has to be 'a specific set of operations in a specific sequence with specific data.' Intel is saying that affects the 900MHz and 1 GHz Itanium 2 chips and that it will not affect the upcoming 1.5 GHz Itanium 2 6M chips." Until the next iteration of chip arrives though, Oliver Wendell Jones writes, "they recommend working around the problem by underclocking the processor to run at 800 MHz instead of its default 900 MHz or 1 GHz." Unlike more canny 802.11 operators who homed in on airports and hotels, T-Mobile has been left with a ...

DRAM Pricing: The Fix Is In
http://newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/12/0125221

  • by Melanie Hollands -Price manipulation by manufacturers of PC memory components such as double data rate (DDR) DRAM is deliberate, periodic, predictable, and has been happening for decades. Conveniently, DRAM price increases tend to be observed during critical periods, such as just before earnings reports or after periods of substantially subdued demand. It has also been suggested that some memory suppliers periodically withhold supply of ...

Java Serialization to XML 2 2.0.9.5
http://freshmeat.net/releases/122571/

Java Serialization to XML 2 allows you to convert Java objects into streams of XML and back again. Using it is as easy as replacing "ObjectOutputStream" with "JSX.ObjectWriter" to convert objects to XML, and replacing "ObjectInputStream" with "JSX.ObjectReader" to convert XML into objects. JSX subclasses Java's serialization classes, so it can be used in their place with the same simple power. This allows you to check and correct your distributed, persisted, and logged object data, and process it with XSLT, SAX, and DOM. JSX handles all objects, complex object graphs, new classes, old classes, and evolving classes. JSX even handles classes that do not implement the "Serializable" interface.
