Return Of The King Footage From E3
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/21/0250206

[0]Arathorn writes "[1]TheOneRing.net has a Quicktime movie up of just
over a minute's worth of [2]live footage from Return of The King , as     shown at [3]E3. The quality's pretty abysmal, but it gives a     much-needed taster of what RoTK's going to look like. The soundtrack     (such as it is) is from the final act of The Two Towers." Links

Washington State Restricts Anti-Cop Videogames http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/21/0516230

Thanks to an anonymous reader for pointing to this CNN report     mentioning that [0]Washington state is the first in the US to regulate     the sale of videogames to minors. The bill, passed Monday, "..forbids     selling minors any video or computer game depicting violence against     law enforcement officials.". Interestingly, the law (as [1]mentioned at     Slashdot a while back) seems to ignore the fairly well-respected
[2]voluntary ESRB ratings for games, with the article suggesting that
Enter The Matrix might be banned for purchase by those under 17, due to     the player battling cops, despite EtM only being rated 'Teen' by the     ESRB.

Why Do Computers Still Crash?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/20/2159238

geoff lane asks: "I've used computers for about 30 years and over that     time their hardware reliability has improved (but not that much), but     their software reliability has remained largely unchanged. Sometimes a     company gets it right -- my Psion 3a has never crashed despite being     switched on and in use for over five years, but my shiny new Zaurus     crashed within a month of purchase (a hard reset losing all data was     required to get it running again). Of course, there's no need to     mention Microsoft's inability to create a stable system. So, why are     modern operating systems still unable to deal with and recover from     problems? Is the need for speed preventing the use of reliable software     design techniques? Or is modern software just so complex that there is     always another unexpected interaction that's not understood and not     planned for? Are we using the wrong tools (such as C) which do not     provide the facilities necessary to write safe software?" If we were to     make computer crashes a thing of the past, what would we have to do,     both in our software and in our operating systems, to make this come to     pass?

RIAA vs The Economy
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/20/2135207

[0]thumbtack writes "[1]Boycott-RIAA.com is running an [2]analysis of
the RIAA sales vs a number of other large corporations. It was compiled     by [3]Justin Moore at Duke University. It is really quite interesting,     showing the the RIAA sales are pretty much consistent with the rest of     the economy. From the analysis: I would assert, however that it does     make the case in cold, hard numbers that the RIAA's claim of digital     piracy ravaging their sales must be taken with a rather large grain of     salt. The CEOs of Eastman-Kodak are in a nearly identical economic     situation as the RIAA, yet do not have the luxury of blaming digital     piracy."
