Slashdot
The Sentient Office Is Coming
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/06/27/2011259

[0]Roland Piquepaille writes "In [1]this article, the Economist
explains that "sentient computing systems are likely to be everywhere     within five years -- listening and watching, and ready to anticipate     their users' every need." "By adding sensors to today's computing and     communications technology, sentient computing seeks to take account of     a machine's environment in order to make it more responsive and useful.     Sentient computing systems are always on, ubiquitously available, and     can adapt to their users. In short, they seek to become real     help-mates." ACM TechNews also wrote [2]an analysis of sentient     computing: "Challenges to sentient computing include the seamless     integration of wireless networks, the spread of sensors throughout     products and the environment, the accurate provision of location data,     and the ability of sentient systems to merge vast volumes of widely     disseminated data and customize its delivery for users. Other problems     researchers will have to tackle include scalability, the development of     cooperative file systems, and sentient applications' ability to find     screens and network devices in close proximity to users." And of     course, there are privacy concerns... Check [3]this summary for     additional details."

Random Movement Printing Technology

Build a Multi-Output MP3 Server?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/06/28/0110244

[0]z80 asks: "I'm rebuilding my house and I am thinking about fitting
speakers in every room of the house and pulling some massive amount of     cables in the walls. I also want to control and send the output to each     set of speakers from the same source, and was thinking that a PC, with     4-6 soundcards, would do the trick, and there are of course a couple of     questions I have. What kind of hardware would be required to be able to     stream up to six different MP3's through six soundcards at the same     time ? Can it even be done? What kind of software can be used to do it?     Which OS? How can it be remotely controlled? With respect to the last     question, I'm thinking about mounting a couple of flat displays around     the house connected to old PC's that run some sort of connection (VNC     maybe) to the mp3 server." This is a topic Ask Slashdot tackled
[1]three years ago. Now, with applications like [2]Ardour showing off
the power of Open Source frameworks like [3]JACK, it seems like     building such a machine might not be as hard as it once was. For those     of you who have managed to build something like this, what did you do     and what hurdles did you have to navigate before things were working?     How would you set up a machine to run independent audio to 4 or more     rooms?

June 28-29. Beginning 1800 UTC Saturday and ending at 2100 UTC Sunday.     Originally started in 1933 as a test of portable amateur radio     operating, it has become an annual event that is a mix of contest,     emergency prepareness, and a public relations activity. Any geeks     interested in learning more about amateur (ham) radio, should find out     if there is a [2]local club ([3]in Canada)that will be particulating.     Most clubs in USA and Canada will have a station on the air. Working Hard?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/06/27/2011204

Biometric Face Recognition Exploit
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/06/27/197229

Do you need more help?X

clscott writes "A [0]researcher at the U. of Ottawa has developed an     exploit to which most biometric systems are probably vulnerable. He     developed an algorithm which allows a fairly high quality image of a     person to be regenerated from a face recognition template. Three     commercial face rec. algorithms were tested and in all cases the image     could masquerade to the algorithm as the target person. Here are links     to a [1]talk and a [2]paper. Unfortunately, biometric templates are     currently considered to be non-identifiable, much like a password hash.     This means that [3]legislation gets passed to require hundreds of     millions of people to have their biometrics encoded onto their     passports. This kind of vulnerability could mean that anyone who reads     these documents has access to the holders fingerprint, iris images,     etc."

X-Box Hackers Trying to Blackmail Microsoft? http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/06/27/1842219

[0]wumarkus420 writes "According to this article from CNet News, an
[1]anonymous X-Box security research team is threatening Microsoft:
either release a digitally-signed official Linux bootloader or face the     release of a new exploit that supposedly works without a modchip. While     I doubt Microsoft 'negotiates with terrorists,' this should still turn     out to be a good I-told-you-so if the exploit is verified." Sounds like     a good way to end up in jail.

http://newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/06/20/214203

  • By Robin 'Roblimo' Miller - Along with the SCO nonsense, we're seeing an increase in anti-Linux FUD. Is this a campaign orchestrated by the producers of our favorite near-monopoly proprietary operating system? Or are the FUD-sters simply using the SCO situation as an excuse to spew their venom? Whatever answer you have to these questions, you had better be very polite if you post those answers in a public forum like NewsForge, because if you ...

libsx 2.04
http://freshmeat.net/releases/127533/

Can we help you?X

Libsx -- the Simple X library -- is a lightweight wrapper library     sitting on top of the Athena Widget set, as implemented in Xaw and     variants (Xaw95 yields much nicer results than Xaw in comination with     libsx). Libsx does not compete with GTK or Qt, but nevertheless allows     you to write a lot of small (or bigger) programs painlessly, with no or     little knowledge of X programming. With libsx, writing a simple program     that opens a window, has a few buttons, and draws some graphics (lines,     circles, bitmaps, etc.) is a matter of 5-10 lines of code, including     the drawing code. Hello World is 2 lines. More complicated programs     that respond to mouse clicks, have buttons, scrollbars, file browsers,     a color selector, etc., can be written in 25-50 lines of code.
