Digital Domesday Defies Doom
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/11/161229

[0]Hulver writes "The BBC Domesday project, originally completed in
1986 and under threat (as reported in [1]this old slashdot story) has     had its data recovered. The contents of the laserdiscs have been put on     DVD, and new programs written so that PCs can access the data.     Interestingly, most of the images and films were not recovered from the     laserdiscs, but were instead re-digitised from the original analog     films at a higher resolution than the laserdiscs contained. Full     details of the recovered data are at the [2]Public Record Office     website."

on the Sci-Fi Channel: 'I must say one thing and will say this very     clearly, if you are a person who really has a strict belief in the     original, I would not advise that you watch this program. It'll hurt     them.'"

Quakeworld Physics Captured in Quake3
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/11/1942219

Rooked_One writes "For people, that to this day, swear by the     quakeworld physics where you could "bunnyhop" through huge maps in a     matter of seconds, but were lured away by better graphics, your day has     come. [0]Fortress Evolution has been announced with a couple of groovy     little movies to drool over until they have a release. Many of you will     remember Quake Team Fortress, well, this mod for Quake3 is made by     players primarily of Mega Team Fortress, which i'm sure some of you     will remember in poor regards. But we won't get into that. What is     needed to know is that you will be able to play QW in the quake3     engine."

Record Labels Looking for a Cut of Tour Revenues http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/11/1911253

[0]Anonymous Coward writes "As many a Slashdotter has pointed out,
musicians make their money not from selling records but from going on     tour. Now [1]record labels are trying to get a piece of the action.     'Now the music labels, hungry for revenue from any source, are mulling     over whether to make a grab for a piece of the tour biz. One company     already has: In October EMI Recorded Music signed a deal with Brit     singer Robbie Williams that gives the label a cut of the pop star's     merchandise, publishing, touring revenue and sponsorship.'"     Anonymous Reader writes "How serious a particular attack type is     depends on two things: how the attack is carried out, and what damage     is done to the compromised system. An attacker being able to run code     on his machine is probably the most serious kind of attack for a home     user. For an e-commerce company, a denial of service (DoS) attack or     information leakage may be of more immediate concern. Each     vulnerability that can lead to compromise can ...
