Carriers Might Profit From Cell Number Portability http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/17/2240251

Makarand writes "Carriers that are adding cell-number portability fees     to your monthly cell phone bills (while fighting against actually     implementing the requirement) [0]may actually rake in profits from     these levies as the total amounts collected will be more than the     projected costs of meeting the FCC's number portability requirements.     Although federal law requires that such fees be 'just and reasonable',     it does not require reporting of their actual expenses. Consumer     advocates feel that the number portability verification processes     required are similar to those used by long-distance phone companies     when a customer switches from one service provider to another and there     is little reason to believe that expenses to meet portability     requirements should vary widely among carriers and be so excessive as     to bring profits for the carriers." Pirate Anime FAQ Updated
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/17/170203

[0]Joe Curzon writes "The [0]Pirate Anime FAQ has finally been updated,
after year of me being far to busy to do anything on the internet! The     FAQ would have been released sooner, but my [1]request on Slashdot.org     produced some "interesting" feedback via e-mail. This update includes a     new and improved Fansub section, which also covers Digisubs.     Scanlations have been added as a point of interest. Additionally the     Audio CD and DVD sections have been improved with more details on the     Pirate Companies and how to spot their "products". I would also like to     say that feedback from readers and the industry is critical for keeping     the FAQ up to date, and without their previous and continuing support     The Pirate Anime FAQ could not exist. Finally I would to remind people     to be extremely cautious when buying from on-line auction sites such as     eBay. The most common e-mail I get sent is from concerned fans who have     just found out that they have bought some pirate goods off a seller who     claimed what they were selling was legitimate." Is the Dean Campaign Spamming?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/17/1624206

bluelark writes "A few days ago, a friend of mine fowarded to me some     spam apparently from the Howard Dean campaign. The sender's return     address, however, was dean@america.propulsive.net. In addition, this is     not the [0]Texas email we've all heard about. Being bored, I did some     research, and I found some intriguing results. If you are interested,     I've posted the [1]the technical details and the [2] the spam. Even     though the images in the email are being [3]served from Venezuela, the     links in the body of the spam are actually redirects from a marketing     partner called [4]eScriptions.net to a [5]Dean for America registration     page. It appears that the campaign is outsourcing their email with
[4]some dubious marketing partners who are then using [6] notorious
spamhauses to send out the actual email. Why does [7]a supposedly "net     savvy" campaign even think for one second that this approach is     acceptable?"

General Applet Interface Library 0.5.0pre1 http://freshmeat.net/releases/132895/

The goal of the General Applet Interface Library is to give programmers     a simple yet powerful applet interface. This library supports both     dockapps and GNOME 2 panel applets. Java SQL Admin Tool 2.3.1
http://freshmeat.net/releases/132884/

You can have a tree     view of the RDBMS or pick a single instance to have a look at its     metadata. It allows you to create, modify, and drop tables and to     create indices on a table. The dynamic form makes it easy to enter data     into a certain table, and the guided query makes it easy to retrieve     data from a table and to export it. Java developers will probably enjoy     the code generator doing an OO relational wrapper and a swing GUI for     them. You can also export and import data and transport it from one     DBMS to another.

mooix 1.0rc3
http://freshmeat.net/releases/132937/

Mooix is a multiuser object-oriented dimension (a MOO) layered over top     of your favorite Unix system. To the user, mooix looks much like any     other MOO. To the programmer, mooix objects look like directories full     of files: executable methods, properties, and links to other objects.     MOOs have historically had poor support for such things as real     programming languages, encrypted logins, multitasking, and editors.     Mooix inherits all of these things from the Unix system it is based on.     At the same time, it's not wedded too tightly to Unix (e.g., it     implements its own permissions system that is much more suited to a MOO     environment than the historical Unix system).
