Makarand writes "Carriers that are adding cell-number portability fees to your monthly cell phone bills (while fighting against actually implementing the requirement) [0]may actually rake in profits from these levies as the total amounts collected will be more than the projected costs of meeting the FCC's number portability requirements. Although federal law requires that such fees be 'just and reasonable', it does not require reporting of their actual expenses. Consumer advocates feel that the number portability verification processes required are similar to those used by long-distance phone companies when a customer switches from one service provider to another and there is little reason to believe that expenses to meet portability requirements should vary widely among carriers and be so excessive as to bring profits for the carriers." (Linux Today) Editor's Note: The Sky is Not Falling http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/16/2322234 Much has been said about The SCO Group's recent exploration of attacking the GPL, which may have been little more than a trial balloon, if you'll pardon the pun, to see what tactics the open-source community might have up its sleeve.
Blackout a Boon for Backup Tools
Among sellers of backup power supplies, it's an unfortunate fact of business that most people give little consideration to the potential for electrical disruptions until something bad actually happens. But when the lights are out, the computer's dead and the TV screen goes blank, consumers are ready to take action. Cryptography locks down WAP and P2P transmissions http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/16/1136205 Anonymous Reader writes "No matter what protocol or architecture you're using to broadcast data through the air, encryption can make that data safer. Coherent Mail Gateway 0.3.0
Coherent Mail Gateway is intended to be a very easy to set up MTA using SMTP and POP3. Greylisting is used on the SMTP daemon to reduce spam. In addition, quite a lot of checks on the validity of information from the SMTP client (such as claimed server name and sender) are carried out, and anyone caught telling lies is disconnected. As well as greylisting, black and white listing is also supported. The target market is small offices and home users with static IPs. Others can use the system but its value will be limited.
Courier 0.43
The Courier mail transfer agent (MTA) is an integrated mail/groupware server based on open commodity protocols such as ESMTP, IMAP, POP3, LDAP, SSL, and HTTP. Data can be added to it and managed dynamically online or edited in its database files offline. An extensive but easy-to-understand list of commands and features, including some channel operation functions and levels of protection, makes Darkbot a very flexible but somehow powerful and complex robot, with almost human conversations and reactions.

Using that data, it can automatically execute commands to record TV shows off of a capture device (multiple capture devices are supported). If Shuriken is installed, furious_tv can also automatically power the system on/off for recordings to save power. General Applet Interface Library 0.5.0pre1 http://freshmeat.net/releases/132895/ The goal of the General Applet Interface Library is to give programmers a simple yet powerful applet interface. This library supports both dockapps and GNOME 2 panel applets. The applet programmer doesn't have to care about if the applet will be used on the Gnome panel or in the dock. The library handles that. Over 50% of the code in a dockapp and a GNOME 2 Panel applet does only one thing, setting up the applet window. With GAI, this can be reduced to just a few lines of code.
Infernal Contractor II 0.1.1
Take on the role of the Infernal Contractor and raise mayhem in this fast-moving 3D office simulation. This episode sees you racing round the office against the clock in an attempt to prove your fitness to the demanding recruiters. Admin is entirely written in Java. It uses Swing GUI Components and JDBC to connect to databases. It has been succesfully tested with MySQL, InstantDB, Oracle, Empress, and PostgreSQL. You can have a tree view of the RDBMS or pick a single instance to have a look at its metadata. It allows you to create, modify, and drop tables and to create indices on a table. The dynamic form makes it easy to enter data into a certain table, and the guided query makes it easy to retrieve data from a table and to export it. Java developers will probably enjoy the code generator doing an OO relational wrapper and a swing GUI for them. You can also export and import data and transport it from one DBMS to another.
JavaDBF 0.3.2

To the programmer, mooix objects look like directories full of files: executable methods, properties, and links to other objects. MOOs have historically had poor support for such things as real programming languages, encrypted logins, multitasking, and editors. Mooix inherits all of these things from the Unix system it is based on. At the same time, it's not wedded too tightly to Unix (e.g., it implements its own permissions system that is much more suited to a MOO environment than the historical Unix system).

The collection of projects will aim to match specific Microsoft products (Exchange Server, etc.) in functionality. Current versions include user and group administration as well as migration tools.
SandWeb 1.0RC4 (Development)
SandWeb is a Web-based Sandbox Management Client. Since we currently only support CVS, it could also be described as a Web-based CVS client. It can be used to check out modules from a VCS such as CVS, manage files, edit, commit, and much more.

SunAngle 0.91
SunAngle displays data about the Sun's rise time, set time, and its current bearing. By pointing your Palm Pilot at the Sun, this program will tell you which way North is. In addition, it draws pie slices on the compass face showing where the Sun will rise and set that day, during the summer solstice and winter solstice. This could be useful for architects, real estate agents, home buyers (does this balcony get any sun in the winter?), and solar installers.

WindowLab 1.14
WindowLab is a small and simple window manager of novel design. It is click-to-focus, shares its window depth policy with the Amiga, and has a window resizing/reshaping method similar to that of 8-1/2 from Plan 9. It maintains the illusion of direct manipulation by constraining the mouse pointer when appropriate (i.e., when a window cannot be dragged any further in one direction). The pointer is also constrained vertically (effectively making the target menu items infinitely tall according to Fitts's law) when it is in the menubar to reduce pointing time.
