Brazilian Government Continues Push For Free Software

last week, drawing 2,000 people, including 3 ministers and presidents
of congress and senate. [0]Computerworld reports (in Portuguese,
[1]translation by submitter), among other things, that 1) House of
Representatives will NOT renew MS-Office licenses, but is looking at
free software alternatives, 2) The free software parliamentary front
was announced in congress, 3) The e-mail system of the house of
representatives is being replaced by a free software one, 4) The
federal government is looking at concrete measures to stimulate free
software as means of saving money and stimulating the national software
industry. Looks like free software is here to stay in Brazil. Kudos to
the many Brazilian free software groups working to make such victories
a reality."

Osirusoft Blacklists The World

open relay blocklists, among others, is [1] no longer operational.
Servers using these lists (including the [2]FTC) are currently
rejecting ALL email. This shutdown seems to be in response to a
several-week-long DDoS attack on Osirusoft, SPEWS and others, resulting
in both sites being down. This has caused [3] much discussion on
n.a.n-a.e, including the suggestion that the attack is somehow related
to the SoBig worm. The spammers must be hurting if they can devote
these kinds of resources to attacking blocklists." Read on below a

Thanks to Yahoo!/Reuters for their story about [0]a new Entertainment Software Association poll showing the demographics of gaming. According to the poll, "...26 percent of game players are women 18 or older, while 21 percent are boys 6 to 17", and the survey also revealed that "...the average gamer spends 6.5 hours a week playing games... while boys 6 to 17 average 7.3 hours per week of game time." Explicit games are also on the increase, as "13.2 percent carried a "Mature" or "M" rating, up from 9.9 percent in 2001 and under 8 percent in 2000." Links

Microsoft is working its way into academic computer science through a
combination of bribery and propaganda. The aricle may be overstating
the case, but it does make it sound as though MS products are
displacing others at a disturbing rate in computer science departments.
Given that academic computing has traditionally been both the source of

P2P Spam?

Sgt York writes "In a NYT article ([0]republished in the Houston
Chronicle, no subscription required) experts at [1]CERT, [2]F-secure,
[3]Trusecure, and the [4]Hall of Justice (see article) think that
SoBig.F is a spam scheme in the making. They say that SoBig.F is the
6th variant in an ongoing experiment with the possible goal of setting
up a distributed spam network, to be rented out to the highest bidder.
If that is their goal, they are well on their way. Another disturbing
note in the article is that "In the case of four of the six programs, a
new version was launched immediately after the self-timed expiration
date of the preceding one". SoBig.F expires in two weeks. "
