Of note are the spectacular strap-on     solid rocket booster separation, the extension of the second-stage     engine nozzle, and the red-hot glow of ablative material in the     second-stage engine. Confused? Frustrated?X

[0]dave writes "Recently, cities such as New York and elsewhere have
been installing radiation detectors in subways as an anti-terror     precaution. However, as reported in [1]New Scientist, patients who are     undergoing radiation treatment are [2]setting off the alarms. From the     article, "a 34-year-old patient who had been treated with radioactive     iodine for Graves disease, a thyroid disorder, returned to their clinic     three weeks later complaining he had been strip-searched twice in     Manhattan subway stations.""

The Great Stanford Buffy Population Equilibrium Study http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/06/2051214

[0]Suture writes "A PhD candidate in ecology at Stanford University has
done an [1]ecological analysis of humans and vampires in Sunnydale, the     home of [2]Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He took some initial assumptions     on rates of population growth, vampire feeding, etc and plugged them     into a differential equations model. What he got was an equilibrium     human population of 36,346, and an vampire population of around 18, and     furthermore the equilibrium is stable. His conclusion was that even     though the show's designers are not ecologists, they managed to come up     with ideas that actually made ecological sense. Scroll to the bottom of     the page to see a pretty cool spiral graph of human population vs     vampire population."

The World's Largest Scavenger Hunt
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/06/1730248

[0]illuminatedwax writes "Every spring, University of Chicago students
attempt to cast off their bookish tendencies and hold the [1]world's     largest scavenger hunt. Now, the event has been filmed by the student     film group, [2]Fire Escape, as a documentary, and is being sold on DVD     and VHS from [3]Periphrastic Films. The film follows the various teams     and their effort to procure the off-the-wall 300+ items. For those who     haven't heard of the University of Chicago Scav Hunt, its biggest claim     to fame is from the 1999 hunt, when [4] students built a working     breeder reactor. Items during the 2002 Scav Hunt featured in the film     include "Passports stamped by all three axes of evil", building     "terrorist base camps" on the University quads, and students competing     in a game show-style contest, featuring a DDR contest, and trivia like     "Digits of Pi" and "Taylor Series." [5]The Scav Hunt lists can be found     here, and [6] the 2002 list here."

Mac vs. PC: Digital Video Editing Comparison http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/06/165223

[0]mnemonic writes "[1]DigitalVideoEditing.com has posted its third
[2]Mac vs. PC comparison, dealing with performance in After Effects and
Photoshop, graphics applications one might expect the Mac to be     significantly faster in. It should be noted that the author, Charlie     White, is a long-time PC supporter and disliker of Macs, though, as he     shows, this preference is for as legitimate reasons as the ones devoted     Mac users cite to disparage PC's. [3]Ace's Hardware has another
[4]comparison that goes further in depth into the specifics of the G4,
P4 and Athlon processors. As when comparing any two pieces of hardware,     it's important to think not only of the relationship between     performance and specification, but performance and price." Links

Advances in Decentralized Peer Networks
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/06/1527214

[0]PureFiction writes "Peer networks are gaining some [1]attention
these days given advances in much more [2]decentralized [3]search
[4]architectures and [5]swarming [6]distribution [7]networks. Research
has indicated that these decentralized networks are resistant to
[8]legal and [9]technological attacks. The continued proliferation of
[10]broadband and [11]wireless networking will ensure [12]pervasive
deployment of distributed [13]peer networking infrastructure that will     drive significant innovations in [14]personal and [15]community digital     communications services."

The core of MOSIX contains     adaptive management algorithms that monitor and respond to uneven     resource distribution among the nodes by preemptive process migration.     In addition to automatic load-balancing, MOSIX supports massive     parallel I/O by partitioning the data of a file to several nodes so     that parallel processes will migrate to the node which has their     portion of the data. The algorithms of MOSIX are geared toward maximal     performance, overhead-free scalability, and ease-of-use.

Slashcode
Getting Slash to email properly
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/12/06/1813256

Do you need help?X

I managed to get a slash site up and running, but cannot get it to send     mail (passwords, etc) to remote email addresses. Everything (slash,     mysql, sendmail wrapper for qmail, apache) is on one box. Is there a     way to get Slash to support SMTP-AUTH? Or is there a way to get Slash     to directly reference the sendmail command on the local box? Or is     there another preferred solution? Please spell it out for me--I'm a     newbie:-) Thanks in advance --Stefan Geens

What does srandblock do?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/12/04/065239

Do you need more help?X

I've been trying to figure out how to get a random sections block like     Slashdot has. As far as I've figured out so far the srandblock     (semi-random block) seems like a good start. When I look in the portald     daemon there is a function newSemiRandomBlock called, but I can't find     the function. Does anyone know how to make the random section block     work? I believe this was discussed before but I didn't see any answers.     Also, is there an easy way to have the section list that tells if there     are recent articles, like the one Slashdot has on the left? --mwmurphy

Submission Approval / Comments not working http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/12/03/0628241

I've been running slashcode now for about 2 years or so. Since around     version 2.2.5, I've had this problem on my site where neither the     comments or approving submitted articles will work. I believe the     problem is also aggrivated by the fact that I am using URL forwarding.     The URL of my site points to a java-script that opens my page on a     specific port within a frame. If a user tries to post a comment, the     submission page comes up fine, but when they click preview or submit,     it just brings them to the discussions list (comments.pl) instead of     posting the comment.. Any help would be appreciated, is this a bug? -     Delrin

Can Anonymous Coward Be Renamed?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/12/03/2159220

Is there a way to rename the nickname Anonymous Coward? If a site wants     to encourage anonymous submissions for some reason, calling them     cowards is a bit insulting. I called up user 1 and changed the Realname     field, but that didn't work. Template 101 edit_comments seems to use     user.nickname, but I can't find a place to change that outside of SQL.     Would something break if I did change it in SQL?

Emailing Stories into a Slash Site?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/12/02/1727227

Can we help you?X

Is it possible to email a story into a slash site rather then using the     web interface? I have a slash site setup as a company bulletin board.     One of the things I'm attempting to do is reduce the number of staff     wide emails by having them posted on the slash site. I figure if I     start positing these messages to the slash site and people receive the     daily email of last day's news they will start to use it. Any     suggestions?

Letting Apache authenticate
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/12/01/1942218

I have setup a Slash site that will be used as an Intranet (restricted     access) discussion site, yet lives out on the INTERnet. Does anyone     know a way to have Apache authenticate users (thus enforcing access     from valid IP addresses) and then grant Slash access to this user     authentication (thus eliminating double logins for users)?
