Version 1.1.3 improves security, fixes a     translation bug and cleans up the documentation in several places.     Wiki! is a content management system which can be (and is) used for     anything from a broad community site to a personal weblog-type setup.     It is written in PHP and requires no database system running. Features     include user accounts management, complete templating and full message     customisation/translation. The new release is once again running at     http://wiki.sourceforge.net

JPluck 0.9 beta 2
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=255030

JPluck is Java-based toolkit for creating Plucker (a popular PalmOS     document format) documents. It includes the easy-to-use JPluck X GUI     for managing and downloading sites. Beta 2 has several important     improvements including a scheduling system, improved Windows HotSync,     and conversion of documents to XML for postprocessing. - New:     Scheduling Documents can now be scheduled for conversion on specific     days of the week and times of the day. More information on the special     Scheduling page. (See the Manual section on the site.) - Improved     Windows HotSync conduit The conduit has been upgraded significantly and     is now part of the main distribution. The big improvement is that PDBs     can be synced to RAM right after they have been generated, while the     rest of the documents are downloaded and queued in parallel. This can     greatly reduce HotSync time when you convert multiple documents,     especially on a serial or IR connection. The second improvement is that     you can instruct the conduit to convert only scheduled and due     documents. Finally, the Windows installer now registers the conduit     automatically. (Note that the conduit cannot sync PDBs to memory cards     yet. Documents meant to be stored on memory cards are still synced at     the end of the HotSync process. This will be addressed shortly.) - New:     Broken links handling Links to pages that are not present in the     resulting Plucker document can be given a distinct color or removed     from the document altogether. - New: HTML to XML conversion dialog This     feature is meant for developers who want to create XSLT stylesheets to     transform HTML pages. Simply specify a filename or URL and JPluck     automatically retrieves the HTML page and converts it to well-formed     XML. You can then paste this XML into a dedicated XSLT editor and     develop stylesheets there. - Improved character handling JPluck now     translates Unicode entities to the PalmLatin character set where     possible. Examples include the curly quotes, the promille, the ellipsis     and the Euro. - Improved logging JPluck C can now send log messages to     standard out, a log file and the progress window simultaneously. JPluck     X can now automatically save messages to a global log file and/or to a     JXL-specific local log file. - Miscellaneous Added the ability to     override the user agent on a per-Document basis. Added the option to     specify the HotSync destination on a per-Document basis. Made several     interface improvements.

namtap writes "A story on NPR's [0]All Things Considered [1]discusses a     light emitting fabric: The costumes onstage in Washington, D.C., might     look a little brighter this opera season -- or at least, much more     colorful. All Things Considered senior host [2]Robert Siegel talks with     Alberto Spiazzi, costume designer for Washington Opera's production of     Aida, about [3] luminex, a self-illuminating fabric." Makarand writes     "A new technology will soon [4]enable scents to be woven into fabrics.     The technology, called Sensory Perception Technologies (SPT), will     allow particles of moisturisers, deodorants and fragrances to be woven     directly into fabrics. Scented tiny droplets contained inside miniature     waterproof particles are woven into fabrics to be released upon     activation by movement or touch. The fabrics are dry cleanable and     machine washable."

Microsoft Fights to Weaken Washington Anti-Spam Law http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/02/25/2057236

An anonymous reader writes "According to the Seattle Times, Microsoft
(probably their MSN arm) is pushing for a change in at least
Washington's anti-spam law. Some analysts claim that the changes     contain [0]holes that will allow Microsoft to be exempt from the law."     Odd that Microsoft is simultaneously trying to stop spam sent to     Hotmail users, and to make sure that it can send unsolicited commercial     email without penalties.

Swarm Intelligence

[0]elamdaly writes "Eric Bonabeau, Ph.D, a keynote speaker at the     upcoming Emerging Technology conference, is a leader in the field of     swarm intelligence and has focused on applying these concepts to real     world problems such as factory scheduling and telecommunications     routing. The concept itself is borrowed from nature; in this interview,     that's where the conversation begins, with ants and other social     insects. Dr. Bonabeau takes us from his [1]childhood nightmares of     carnivorous wasps to applying the theories of swarm intelligence to     solving real problems in the business world." Links

Verbing Weirds Google

[0]MoNickels writes "Back in January, the American Dialect Society     voted the neologism "to google" as the most useful word of 2002. Now     bring on the lawyers! Google's have sent a [1]cease-and-desist letter     to Paul McFedries, creator of the famous [2]Word Spy site, demanding he     remove google as a verb from his [3]lexicon, or else. Frank Abate, an     American editor for the Oxford English Dictionary, points out, however,     that [4]you can't claim proprietary rights to a verb." Update: 02/26     03:19 GMT by [5]T: MoNickels writes with an update: "Frank Abate is not     an editor of the OED, but he is a former editor of the New Oxford     American Dictionary, both published by Oxford University Press."
