Gaim 0.60 released (Linux and win32)
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=266400

Can't find what you're looking for?X

Wow. Almost 10 months in the making, Gaim v0.60 is finally released. Wow. 0.60. Wow. Gaim is an all-in-one IM client that resembles AIM. Gaim lets you use AIM, ICQ, Yahoo, MSN, IRC, Jabber, Napster, Zephyr, and Gadu-Gadu, all at once. Gaim is NOT endorsed by or affiliated with AOL, Yahoo, MSN or Napster. This is our GTK+-2.0 port, with a ton of new features and an almost completely rewritten GUI. If you haven't been using this in CVS, you're in for some real shock and awe. This release is for Linux operating systems as well as Win32. There have been substantial changes in this release. Everyone should take a look at the ChangeLog. Enjoy!

phpPgAdmin: Third development version released http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=266122

The phpPgAdmin project is proud to announce a new development release of its 3.0.0 software. The biggest improvements have been in our foreign language support. As well as French, Japanese and Russian translations, all our translations work better and we've fixed a lot of small bugs. phpPgAdmin is a fully functional web-based administration utility for a PostgreSQL database server. It handles all the basic functionality as well as some advanced features such as triggers, views and functions (stored procs).

DataVision 0.7.6 released
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=266061

DataVision is an Open Source reporting tool similar to Crystal Reports. Reports can be designed using a drag-and-drop GUI. They may be run, viewed, and printed from the application or exported as HTML, XML, PDF, LaTeX2e, DocBook, or tab- or comma-delimited text files. The output files produced by LaTeX2e and DocBook can in turn be used to produce PDF, text, HTML, PostScript, and more. This is a bug fix release. SQL tables would still sometimes not load their columns. They should, now. The HTML layout engine now uses "font-family", not "font-name", when specifying a field's font.

SandBoss_1_2 released
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=266060

sandboss is a free Structs And Nodes Development environment (sandbox) built on JBoss and other open source tools. The goal is to provide a working project management system as an example distributed enterprise application built using SAND. In addition to assorted bug fixes and minor enhancements, this release greatly extends the SANDForms UI structures and related processing. It is now possible to handle query operations on persistent message information (in addition to the existing add/update/delete processing) within a single unified form environment. Forms can also be named, to support control of multiple forms in a single display. See the UIGen.html documentation in the top level docs for details.

It includes enhancements for stability, performance and compatibility, plus new features and many bugfixes. We consider this the best version of SquirrelMail available.

Have You Really Read Your ISP's TOS?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/09/018236

NewtonsLaw writes "[0]XTRA, New Zealand's largest ISP is in the process of losing customers in droves after it announced its new [1]Terms of Service which seek to claim rights over customers intellectual property (see the [2]Slashdot discussion). Now, if that wasn't enough,
[3]Aardvark Daily reports that the ISP is also banning its users from
saying bad things (anything 'detrimental to our reputation or to our brand') about it. I wonder how many slashdotters have actually read their own ISPs' terms of service in detail? Is this type of IP-grab and clampdown on free speech is unique to Xtra or is it slowly pervading the whole industry, right across the globe?" Read on for Xtra's amendments to the original IP-grab terms, though. Links

Are Printers What They Used To Be?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/09/0249245

[0]Fifster asks: "Has anyone noticed any trends in terms of printer
quality nowadays? Perhaps it's just me being nostalgic, but I used to have an old HP Deskjet 500 maybe...ten years ago, and it worked for years. Sure, it wasn't colour, and it was noisy and somewhat slow, but it never died. After I decided to retire it and buy a fancy new colour printer with features I don't really need, I've gone through about a printer a year. I finally decided to get a [1] Brother HL-1440 laser printer to avoid the cost of cartridges after my last HP died after I replaced an expensive cartridge. Has anyone else noticed this trend of poorer and poorer quality printers, at least in terms of life expectancy?"

http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/09/0156259

Runnin_Rob writes "[0]CNET Nets.com is [1]reporting that Sun is likely (not definite, but likely) to start using AMD’s Opteron in the near future. The article also discusses how Linux is pushing for greater acceptability of Solaris x86 because 'All of the sudden it is OK to (put) something other than Windows.'" Links

Slashback: Taplight, Handheld, Samba
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/08/2332216

Slashback is packed tonight with updates and clarifications on several fronts: read on below for, among other things, BitTorrent download stats after the recent Red Hat 9 release, the BSA's questionable statistical methods when it comes to calculating incentives and losses in the source-secret software world, and (can you believe?) yet another way to assemble an eerie pulsing light fixture.

A Title To Replace "Systems Administrator"? http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/08/2237213

sjanich writes "A discussion has begun at SAGE on an updated title to replace "Systems Administrator". I figure more sysadmins are reading Slashdot than are reading SAGEwire. Rob Kolstad of SAGE wrote: 'What in the world do we call the collective group of those people who make computers work properly? I'm not talking about users, and I'm not talking about software developers. I am thinking of: system administrators, LAN administrators, network administrators (both kinds!), security administrators, e-mail administrators, desktop support groups, database administrators, and all the other kinds of support that keep the IT function of an institution running -- what is this huge group called?' My favorite options are "Computer Infrastructure Practitioner" or "Computer Infrastructure Specialist". The original discussion can be found [0]here at SAGEwire." Links

Chinese Sites Band Together To Counter Google http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/08/217230

egoff writes "[0]The China Search Alliance is a coalition of over 200 Chinese internet portals that have joined together to try to capture the Chinese search market before Google can [1]"invade." Started by
[2]China.com.cn, an official government portal, the CSA has now
expanded to include mainly commercial, non-governmental, Chinese sites. According to Guangzhou-based New Express News, Google has [3]already approached several Chinese firms about forming a partnership. Being that it started in the government, this looks like a tool for
[4]greater control while appearing to be in open competition with
