Implemented additional security features to     prevent sharing of official releases and other filsesets containing     copyrighted material. 3. Implemented compression of network messages     that can reduce network overhead by as much as 50% or more. 4. Added     support for users behind proxy servers. 5. Improved accuracy and     transfer speed calcuations and display. 6. Added "last activity" column     to shares and partials lists 7. Allowed selection of multiple files for     searching and downloading. 8. Fixed bugs that prevented columns from     sorting correctly. 9. Combined Settings into a single menu and     reorganized them. 10. Began implementation of support for FLAC. 11.     Restored Phish to the network and updated trading policies for many     artists. Best regards, The Furthurnet team

A New Meaning For Geotargeting At Monster.com http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/27/0121231

Duke submits a link to this [0]New York Times story, according to which     "it seems that Monster.com has taken the U.S. government's policy of     sanctions against certain countries and run with it where no man has     gone before. Monster 'has deleted resumes that list current addresses     in those countries.' and more fun stuff. Unix-Haters Handbook Available Online

[0]prostoalex writes "The [1]Unix-Haters Handbook, publication year
1994, is now available online for free as a [2]single PDF file.     Apparently some suburban Seattle company has agreed to host this 3.5MB     file on its servers. The anti-foreword is written by no other but     Dennis Ritchie, who proclaims: 'Here is my metaphor: your book is a     pudding stuffed with apposite observations, many well-conceived. Like     excrement, it contains enough undigested nuggets of nutrition to     sustain life for some. But it is not a tasty pie: it reeks too much of     contempt and of envy.'" The Art, Music And Computer Science Of DNA http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/26/2131256

Build6 writes "As part of the 50th anniversary of the discovery of     DNA's double-helix structure, many news publications are writing about     what has been done with the discovery so far; [0]The Economist has a     very interesting one about DNA's use in art and music. ... You can

well worth the money, I've subscribed for over a decade), or online."     And [2]Clint Harris writes "As part of its series commemorating the     50th anniversary of 'the first scientific description of DNA' NPR     recently aired [3]a story comparing DNA to software (RealAudio or     Windows Media). 'For many, the best analogy for the way DNA works is     that it's like a computer program at the heart of every cell. Some of     its programming tricks bear an uncanny resemblance to ones the human     brain has dreamed up...DNA is [like] spaghetti code because nature has     been tinkering with the system for billions of years like a bad     programmer.'"

Freshmeat
Fractal Software
http://freshmeat.net/articles/view/827

Ever since I first stayed up late watching an 8-bit computer     painstakingly draw a Mandelbrot set, I've been fascinated by fractals.     Of course, I had to write a fractal-generating program of my own     straight away; the combination of the amazingly simple math required to     produce the Mandelbrot set and the amazing graphics that came out was     irresistible. Clearly, I'm not alone; every programmer with even the     slightest interest in math writes a fractal program at some point, and     a good number of these are now available as Open Source. Here's a     brief, opinionated, and decidedly non-exhaustive survey of some of the     programs I've found.

Alleyoop 0.7.1
http://freshmeat.net/releases/120918/

Alleyoop is a GNOME frontend to the Valgrind memory checker. Its     features include a right-click context menu to intelligently suppress     errors or launch an editor on the source file, jumping to the exact     line of the error condition. A searchbar at the top of the viewer can     be used to limit the viewable errors to those that match the regex     criteria entered. A fully functional Suppressions editor is also     included.

Another NBD System 0.1
http://freshmeat.net/releases/120915/

Another NBD System is a redesigned, rewritten, multi-threaded Linux     Network Block Device (NBD) server daemon and monitoring tool. It is     compatible with the Linux kernel NBD driver. Written to use glibc's     large file support, this implementation also features multi-home     configurability, TCP wrapper support, port services lookup, restartable     copy-on-write mode, accounting, memory mapped I/O support, and runtime     monitoring.

http://freshmeat.net/releases/120876/

Do you need more help?X

The Autoconf Macro Archive provides documented and tested macros that     are useful to many software writers using the autoconf tool, but too     specific to be included into autoconf itself.

Bilbo 0.2
http://freshmeat.net/releases/120890/

Bilbo is a PHP frontend to run scans using the security scanner Nessus.

cutmp3 0.4
http://freshmeat.net/releases/120901/

darcs 0.9.7
http://freshmeat.net/releases/120873/

Darcs is an advanced revision control system along the lines of CVS or     arch. It has two particularly distinctive features which differ from     other revision control systems: each copy of the source is a fully     functional branch, and underlying it is a consistent and powerful     theory of patches (the latter being darcs' most important feature).

DBMonster 0.3.1 (Development)
http://freshmeat.net/releases/120891/

Can we help you?X

DBMonster is a tool which helps database application developers with     tuning the structure of the database, tuning the usage of indexes, and     testing the application performance under heavy database load.     DBMonster generates as much random data as you wish and puts it into an     SQL database. It provides a very pluggable interface and is trivial to     use.
