QGIS version 0.0.12
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=308044

Can we help you?X

QGIS 0.0.12 is available. The biggest change is the ability to select features in shapefiles and zoom to the selected set. Features can be selected by dragging the mouse or from the attribute table (thanks to Marco). Quantum GIS (QGIS) is designed to be a Geographic Information System (GIS) built for Linux/Unix. QGIS will offer support for vector and raster formats. The other major change is the Identify function now returns all features within the search radius and displays them in a tree view. Linux and FreeBSD binaries are available in the download area. Note - binaries are provided with and without PostgreSQL support. For PostgreSQL support, choose the
qgis-0.0.12-platform_postgres_bin.tar.gz. You must have the appropriate libraries installed. See Installation on the QGIS home page for information on requirements.

Slashdot
Australia To Fast-Track Anti-Spam Bill
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/09/0324222

Can't find what you're looking for?X

Crypto Gnome writes "[0]News Interactive is reporting that anti-spam legislation is being fast-forwarded by the Australian Federal Government. The proposed law will ban sending commercial emails without the recipient's prior consent and ban the use of email harvesting or list-generating software. Naturally, this will only directly impact local Australian spammers, but they're also hoping this will set a precedent for the International community." Banning list-generation software seems a bit heavy-handed, doesn't it? Links

Quantum Cryptography Gets Nanotube Boost http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/09/0312215

[0]c1ay writes "In an [1]article at the [2]ScienceDaily News it is
reported that two researchers at the University of Rochester have discovered a new property of carbon nanotubes, ideal photon emission. "The emission bandwidth is as narrow as you can get at room temperature," says Lukas Novotny, professor of optics at Rochester and co-author of the study. Such a narrow and steady emission can make such fields as quantum cryptography and single-molecule sensors a practical reality. [3]RSA and [4]Elliptic Curve wouldn't stand a chance against this unbreakable encryption."

Judge OKs Competitive Pop-Up Ads
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/09/0325225

[0]Mirkon writes "A while back, U-Haul filed suit against adware giant
WhenU for displaying competing advertisements to users as they browsed U-Haul's site. Friday, District Judge Gerald Bruce Lee's [1]ruling
[2]dismissed U-Haul's suit, saying '...the fact is that the computer
user consented to this detour when the user downloaded WhenU's computer software from the Internet,' and 'Alas, we computer users must endure pop-up advertising along with her ugly brother, unsolicited bulk e-mail, "spam," as a burden of using the Internet.' While the ruling was issued in the context of unfair competitive marketing, it's speculated that this will have broad implications in the fight against adware - and they aren't kind to the user. WhenU chief executive Avi Naider is unfortunately quoted as saying 'This is a victory for consumer choice -- it ultimately protects consumers' right to control what they see on their computer screens.'" [0]nuke-alwin writes "The first meeting of the 'academic council' of
the newly-launched [1]World Nuclear University (WNU) was held in the UK last week. The mission of the WNU is to strengthen the international community of people and institutions to guide and further develop nuclear power and many other nuclear applications (in agriculture, medicine, environmental protection). As workers in the nuclear industry are aging, organisations have started Young Generation Networks such as the [2]YGN of the [3]British Nuclear Energy Society. Historic Linux File Archive Created

[0]jemagid writes "[1]Ibiblio (nee metalab, nee sunsite) has rummaged

[2]Historic Linux. The files include snapshots of the early Linux
archives including sunsite.unc.edu and tsx-11.mit.edu, and early distributions such as MCC (Manchester Computing Center) and SLS (Softlanding Linux Systems), which were some of the first attempts to make Linux easy to install and use. The early RedHat releases are also included, as is early Suse, Debian, Slackware, and Blade. The early distributions ran on machines as small as 386's with 2-4 MB of RAM, so these could be fun ways to resurrect ancient hardware." Links

http://freshmeat.net/releases/135205/

Can we help you?X

Cheap Threads is a collection of portable C routines for implementing sychronous threads. It includes a scheduler and a facility for passing messages among threads. Threads may run in a round robin or according to a priority scheme. Each thread must voluntarily relinquish control from time, via an ordinary function return, so that other threads can run. Since the threads are synchronous, i.e. they don't interrupt each other, they don't need to use semaphores, mutexes, critical sections, or other facilities to keep from interfering with each other. One version of Cheap Threads is designed for embedded systems.

http://freshmeat.net/releases/135266/

Can't find what you're looking for?X

CodeWorker is a scripting language for producing reusable, tailor-made, evolving, and reliable IT systems with a high level of automation. An extended BNF syntax allows the definition of new domain-specific languages or parsing existing formats. A template-based syntax like PHP and JSP allows the writing of patterns for generating code. The code generation knows how to preserve protected areas with hand-typed code and offers code expansion, source-to-source translation, and program transformation. These tasks are executed in a straightforward process, with no binding to an external programming language and with no translation of requirements specification in a constraining format.

DKMS 0.34.10
http://freshmeat.net/releases/135262/

DKMS (Dynamic Kernel Module Support) is a framework where device driver source can reside outside the kernel source tree so that it is very easy to rebuild modules as you upgrade kernels. This allows Linux vendors to provide driver drops without having to wait for new kernel releases (as a stopgap before the code can make it back into the kernel), while also taking out the guesswork for customers attempting to recompile modules for new kernels. For veteran Linux users it also provides some advantages since a separate framework for driver drops will remove kernel releases as a blocking mechanism for distributing code.

DRT 0.4.0
http://freshmeat.net/releases/135190/

Don't know where to look next?X

DRT is a design recovery tool for interactive graphical applications running under the X Window System. The tool automatically captures actions performed while using such an application. One can search and browse these actions to learn about the design of an application.

DSPAM 2.7.0-beta.1
http://freshmeat.net/releases/135217/

DSPAM is a server-side anti-spam agent for UNIX email servers. It masquerades as the email server's local delivery agent and filters/learns spam using a Bayesian statistical approach which provides an administratively maintenance-free, self-learning anti-spam service. Each email is broken down into its most interesting tokens, each assigned a spam probability. All probabilities are then combined to produce a statistical probability of spam. This approach, applied to a mature corpus of email, has the potential to yield a 99.75% success rate with less than a 0.03% chance of false positives.

It allows many components, driven by multiple algorithms with different timescales, to coexist. The core library is written in C++ with a Python binding, and frontend software uses Python.

e4Graph 1.0a9
http://freshmeat.net/releases/135188/

e4Graph is a C++ library that allows programs to store graph-like data persistently and to access and manipulate that data efficiently. With e4Graph, you can arrange your data in the most natural form that reflects the relationships between its parts, rather than having to force it into a table-like format. The e4Graph library also allows you to concentrate on the relationships you want to represent, and not on how to store them in a database. You can modify data items, and add and remove connections and relationships between pieces of data on the fly. e4Graph allows you to represent an unlimited number of different connections between pieces of data, and your program can selectively manipulate the data according to the relationships it cares about, not having to know about other connections represented in the data set.

JSX subclasses Java's serialization classes, so it can be used in their place with the same simple power. This allows you to check and correct your distributed, persisted, and logged object data, and process it with XSLT, SAX, and DOM. JSX handles all objects, complex object graphs, new classes, old classes, and evolving classes. JSX even handles classes that do not implement the "Serializable" interface.
