Bluetooth for Homebrew Robots?

MacGod asks: "As an extra-curricular for my university, I am working some other engineers to try and design a [0]RoboSoccer Project (please don't wipe out our server if possible), with the hopes of entering the [1]RoboCup tournament in the near future. We are currently using some low-frequency Abacom RF communication modules, but would like to able to go to BlueTooth if possible. However, I have found it nearly impossible to locate any suitable BlueTooth modules. We'd really like something that could be put onto a breadboard, and that would come with sufficiently detailed instructions that we'd be able to implement it without being BlueTooth experts. Any suggestion on homebrew BlueTooth solutions, Slashdot?"

Ransom Love, Caldera Co-Founder Interviewed http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/26/154251

[0]rootmon writes "The [1]interview focuses mostly on Ransom Love's views of SCO Group's current dispute with IBM and the Free/Open Source Software Community. It also provides some insights on why Caldera purchased the UNIX business of SCO and their joint Monterey project with IBM. In summary, Love's view is 'My belief is that Unix and Linux should co-exist and should look and feel the same to application developers. Fundamentally, I would not have pursued SCO's path. You see, the challenge is building business. Litigation, no matter what side you're on, tears down businesses. Only the attorneys win. Companies should focus their energies on building their businesses, not on lawsuits. I don't see any positive outcomes.'" Links

Epylog is a log notifier and parser that periodically tails system logs on Unix systems, parses the output in order to present it in an easily readable format (parsing modules currently exist only for Linux), and mails the final report to the administrator. It can run daily or hourly. Epylog is written specifically for large clusters where many systems log to a single loghost using syslog or syslog-ng. Although Epylog can be used on standalone systems, other packages (like logwatch) are probably better suited for such purposes.

Many API samples and benchmark tests are included. JDK1.1 or later is required.

You can also use it to generate full screen splash screens for the Linux Progress Patch.

Fugu SSH 1.1.0 beta 2
http://freshmeat.net/releases/137181/

Fugu also includes support for SCP files transfers, and the ability to create secure tunnels through SSH.

Gujin 0.8
http://freshmeat.net/releases/137100/

Gujin is a PC boot loader which can analyze your filesystems. It finds the Linux kernel images available, as well as other bootable partitions
(for *BSD, MS-DOS, Windows, etc.), and displays a graphical menu for
selecting which system to boot. Because it understands the structure of Linux kernel images, Gujin does not need LILO and can even load very big kernels. There is no need to execute anything after making a new kernel: just copy the kernel image file into the "/boot" directory. Gujin is written almost entirely in C with GCC, and it fully executes in real mode to be as compatible as possible.

Jamon 1.2
http://freshmeat.net/releases/137139/

Jamon is a text template engine for Java that is useful for generating dynamic HTML, XML, or any text-based content. It has a rich feature set that supports encapsulation, parameterization, functional decomposition, and reuse of presentation logic. Because it is compiled to non-reflective Java code, and statically type-checked, Jamon is ideally suited to supporting refactoring of template-based UI applications. Templates declare the arguments they require for rendering, including dynamic template content ("fragments"), and are translated into Java classes with public methods whose signatures reflect the arguments declared in the templates. This provides compile-time type- checking as well as excellent performance.

Jatha 1.1
http://freshmeat.net/releases/137075/

Jatha is a macro preprocessor for Java. It's different from most macro systems because it doesn't just perform textual substituation the way C macros do; instead, in Jatha, each macro is processed by custom Java code that you write yourself. It allows you to have very smart macros. You can put Jatha macros inside any kind of file--Java source files, C++ source files, plain text, etc. Jatha is not intended for use in Web sites or HTML, because it is not designed to do macro expansions whenever a page is requested.

Java Serialization to XML 2 2.1.1
http://freshmeat.net/releases/137137/

Don't know where to look next?X

Java Serialization to XML 2 allows you to convert Java objects into streams of XML and back again. Using it is as easy as replacing "ObjectOutputStream" with "JSX.ObjectWriter" to convert objects to XML, and replacing "ObjectInputStream" with "JSX.ObjectReader" to convert XML into objects. JSX subclasses Java's serialization classes, so it can be used in their place with the same simple power. This allows you to check and correct your distributed, persisted, and logged object data, and process it with XSLT, SAX, and DOM. JSX handles all objects, complex object graphs, new classes, old classes, and evolving classes. JSX even handles classes that do not implement the "Serializable" interface.

The FTP API is separated from the GUI and can also be used in third-party applications. It should ideally be launched in a Web browser via Java Web Start (contained by the Java 1.4 plugin), but can also be started locally.

LavaPS is an interactive process-tracking program like "top", but with a much different attitude. Rather than presenting lots of specific info in digital form, it tries to present certain important information in a graphical analog form. The idea is that you can run it in the background and get a rough idea of what's happening to your system without devoting much concentration to the task. Lavaps was inspired the idea of calm computing from "The Coming Age of Calm Technology" by Mark Weiser and John Seely Brown.
