SCO Threatens to Press IP Claims on Linux -$99/cpu http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/01/13/0111216

Tangential writes "New [0]story on LinuxBusiness week says SCO is about     to mount an effort to get all Linux sites to pay a per cpu license for     so-called patent violations."SCO has been proposing to charge users $96     per CPU for a so-called one-time System 5 for Linux software license to     protect their systems from SCO-enforced patent issues if they ante up     as soon as demand is made." They've retained David Boies (DOJ     prosecutor of Microsoft) to handle the legal issues." Note: I've been     unable to substantiate this - which are fairly incendiary claims.     Further updates as more is heard.

Science Project Quadruples Surfing Speed http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/01/13/1212253

[0]johnp. writes "A computer browser that is said to least quadruple
surfing speeds on the Internet has won the top prize at an Irish     exhibition for young scientists, it was announced on Saturday. Adnan     Osmani, 16, a student at Saint Finian's College in Mullingar, central     Ireland spent 18 months writing 780,000 lines of computer code to     develop the browser. [1]Known as "XWEBS", the system works with an     ordinary Internet connection using a 56K modem on a normal telephone     line. " A number of people had submitted this over the weekend -     there's absolutely no hard data that I can find to go along with this,     so if you find anything more on it, plz. post below - somehow 1500     lines of code per day, "every media player" built in doesn't ring true     for me.

chriton writes "[0]The Inquirer is running articles [1]about HP's and
[2]new "Marvel" server which will arrive Tuesday, Jan 14th and the
expectation that HP will try to keep it's performance quiet. Not     because it's bad like Itanic I, but because it's too good! It's built     on Alpha EV78 processors connected by a switched fabric and promises     blazing performance. "Marvel has, apparently some rollickingly good     benchmarks that HP wants to underplay, just in case people start     comparing the performance of the Alpha Marvel architecture with the     Itanium 2 it also sells, and perhaps more importantly, the SuperDome     machines." Case to Step Down from AOLTW
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/01/13/0017253

[0]squiggleslash writes "Reuters is [1]reporting that Steve Case, the
CEO of AOL Time Warner, is resigning, to be effective in May. He'll     still be part of AOLTW but as a director responsible for joint     strategy. There have been various moves afoot to oust the man who     masterminded AOL's takeover of the media giant: the Time Warner part of     the partnership wants control whereas Case came from the loss making     super-ISP. Case quitting could be bad news for technologists given the     current battles between content providers like Time Warner and the     Internet and computer industries."

2002 MP3 Winners and Losers

Can we help you?X

An anonymous reader writes "MP3newswire.net is running their annual
[0]losers and [1]winners list in digital media. Each has 8 finalists
with the big winner KaZaa for becoming profitable and doubling     Napster's peak traffic despite setbacks like getting briefly booted     from Download.com. The big loser? No surprise, it's the RIAA who     despite several wins in court have failed in their quest to stem file     trading. Lawrence Lessig and Dmitry Skylarov also made the winners     list, though as the article points out it wasn't exactly a great year     for Dmitry."

ZoneMinder 0.9.7
http://freshmeat.net/releases/109283/

ZoneMinder is a set of applications which support capture, analysis,     recording, and monitoring of video data coming from cameras attached to     a Linux system. It features a user-friendly Web interface which allows     viewing, archival, review, and deletion of images and movies captured     by the cameras. The image analysis system is highly configurable,     permitting retention of specific events, while eliminating false     positives. ZoneMinder is built around the definition of a set of     individual 'zones' of varying sensitivity and functionality for each     camera. This allows the elimination of regions which should be ignored     or the definition of areas which will alarm if various thresholds are     exceeded in conjunction with other zones. All management, control, and     other functions are supported through the Web interface.

MH-E 7.1 released
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=241722

MH-E is the GNU Emacs front end for MH. Version 7.1 includes the new     features of multiple identities and alias completion, and indexed     searching has been revamped. Various other features have been added and     a few bugs were fixed. Read on for more details. Project home page at:     http://mh-e.sourceforge.net/. * Changes in MH-E 7.1 This release     includes the new features of multiple identities and alias completion.     In addition, indexed searching has been revamped. Various other     features have been added and a few bugs were fixed. ** New Features in     MH-E 7.1 *** Multiple Identities MH-E now supports multiple identities     (closes SF #628782). That means that you can have different From and     Organization header fields (or any other header field of your choice)     as well as different signatures depending on your context. Usually, the     contexts are home and work. Add your identities to the variable     `mh-identity-list' and set the default identity with the variable     `mh-identity-default'. Your identity can be switched on the fly by     using the Identity menu or by calling "M-x mh-insert-identity RET".     This functionality can be customized within the mh-identity group. ***     Alias Completion and Harvesting The contributed file mh-alias.el has     been rewritten and incorporated into MH-E. By default, aliases are     culled from the system files "/etc/nmh/MailAliases,"     "/usr/lib/mh/MailAliases," and "/etc/passwd" (see     `mh-alias-system-aliases') and from your "AliasFile" MH profile     component. These aliases are then used for completion in the minibuffer     when entering addresses. Within the header of the message draft, "M-TAB     (mh-letter-complete)" is used to do alias completion. The package also     provides for alias creation based upon the From header field of the     current message. Use the lasso button (mh-alias-grab-from-field). This     functionality can be customized within the mh-alias group. *** Index     Folder Updates The results of an index search "F i (mh-index-search)"     are now stored in a bona fide folder so that you can refile messages     and reply to messages directly from the result folder. This folder is a     sub-folder of +mhe-index and the name is based upon the search string     (closes SF #623321). If a prefix argument is given then the search in     the current index buffer is redone. The index folder lists the names of     the source folders as before. However, instead of using RET on the name     of the folder to visit the folder, use "v (mh-show-index-visit-folder)"     anywhere within the results to visit that folder narrowed to the     results of the search. Additional functions have been added to navigate     including "TAB (mh-index-next-folder)", and "SHIFT-TAB     (mh-index-previous-folder)." *** mh-visit-folder Interface Updated A     change was made to the prompting of the message range. In general, you     can use the same format for messages and sequences as you can in MH     with a single exception: a single number means to scan that many     messages, rather than scan that message number. This turns out to be     much more useful than visiting a single message and is consistent with     Gnus and the MH-E speedbar (closes SF #655891). If mh-visit-folder is     called non-interactively and RANGE is nil then all messages are     displayed. This behavior is now documented and provides backwards     compatibility. *** Threading Improvements After incorporating new mail     into a threaded folder, unseen messages can be spread about. Two new     functions have been added to make it easier to find them: these are     "M-n (mh-next-unread-msg)" and "M-p (mh-previous-unread-msg)" (closes     SF #630328) Two new functions were added to delete and refile threads.     They are "T d (mh-thread-delete)" and "T o (mh-thread-refile)"     respectively (closes SF #630493). In addition, the key "k" used to be     bound to the function `mh-delete-subject': it is now bound to     `mh-show-delete-subject-or-thread'. New functions to navigate threads     include "T u (mh-thread-ancestor)", which can jump to the root message     of the current thread given an optional argument, "T n     (mh-thread-next-sibling)", and "T p (mh-thread-previous-sibling)" ***     Refiling of Messages in Region If mark is active and     `transient-mark-mode' is enabled then all the messages in the region     are refiled. *** vCard Handling If a signature cannot be identified,     but there is a vCard attachment, then that vCard will be presented as a     signature (closes SF #649216). *** New Info Added to mh-version     Information about Gnus versions available at both compile time and run     time has been added. ** New Variables in MH-E 7.1 The defcustom groups     were reorganized. Rather than iterate the specific changes here, yo
