Slashdot
An anonymous reader writes "According to this BBC [0]article the UK and the EU are planning to making unsolicited email simply illegal. This doesn't do anything for prevention practically, but it does legally pave the way for measures that do. Lord Sainsbury of Turville admits it will do nothing to stop spam from outside the EU." [0]efedora asks: "I have about 650 hours of VHS tape going back about
20 years (no, not my porn collection) and the tape is starting to
deteriorate. What are the best options for preserving the contents?
Quality is important but not critical, so long as it's close to the
original. Very low labor cost/time and simple operation. are important.
Is there an easy way to do this?"

60G Nomad Zen vs. The iPod
war3rd writes "According to an [0]article in BetaNews, Creative is
going to be releasing an upgraded [1]Nomad Zen at the end of the month
that is not only larger than the [2]iPod, but cheaper too. At $400 for
60G ($100 less than the 30G iPod), the new Zen will sport more
features, although it may be slightly larger than the newer generation
of iPods. I have been putting off buying an MP3 player until I felt
that the arms race was settling down, but the new Zen is making my
mouth water. So what does the /. community think, are Creative and
Apple going to be the top players in this arena? Is it time I jumped
onto the bandwagon? One thing is for certain, I am going to be watching
the reviews closely."

DKMS 0.28.04
DKMS (Dynamic Kernel Module Support) is a framework where device driver source can reside outside the kernel source tree so that it is very easy to rebuild modules as you upgrade kernels. This allows Linux vendors to provide driver drops without having to wait for new kernel releases (as a stopgap before the code can make it back into the kernel), while also taking out the guesswork for customers attempting to recompile modules for new kernels. For veteran Linux users it also provides some advantages since a separate framework for driver drops will remove kernel releases as a blocking mechanism for distributing code.

It then extracts the generated statistics of each server and sends them to a collector server using SOAP. It feeds a database with these collected statistics on the collector server, and uses some dynamic pages on the collector server to generate on the fly Webalizer-like Web pages in order to give a summary of all the statistics generated by the different servers included in the system. It also generates graphs to make the results more human readable.
GNOME System Tools 0.25.0
The GNOME System Tools are a set of cross-platform configuration utilities for Linux and other Unix systems. Internally they are divided in frontends and backends. The frontend knows nothing about the underlying system and provides the same user interface across the different types of systems. The backend knows how to read and write the configuration information. The GNOME System Tools do not impose a new database on the system: they work with the default configuration files so that configuration can still be done by hand or by other tools.

iHook 0.9.0
iHook is a graphical frontend for any command-line executable. It gives scripts a pleasant Aqua face, and allows script writers to provide graphical feedback without having to learn one of the higher APIs available for Mac OS X. iHook accomplishes this through its ability to understand a set of directives. When a script writes an iHook Directive to stdout, iHook will modify its own interface based on the content of the Directive. In this way, a simple shell script can have an Aqua interface, complete with a progress bar and drawer. When launched in the Finder, iHook prompts the user to choose a script to run; iHook also accepts file drops on its icon, and will attempt to run the dropped file. When no user is logged in, iHook tries to execute /etc/logout.hook. This makes iHook highly useful as an interface for Mac OS X LogoutHooks.
Impact 0.3.2
Impact is a finite element program based on an explicit time stepping algorithm. It can be used to simulate dynamic events such as car crashes or other large deformation events. Its clients can run in their own processes (i.e., as normal applications), or can they can run within the JACK server (as a "plugin"). JACK is different from other audio server efforts in that it has been designed from the ground up to be suitable for professional audio work. This means that it focuses on two key areas: synchronous execution of all clients, and low latency operation.

fileupload-class.php extends PHP's native support for uploading files through a Web browser. It can clean up the file's name, detect its mime type, and add the proper extension. Special characters in the file's name get deleted and spaces get replaced with underscores. The new "cleaned up" name is then returned by the class for use with a database or link management. There is also the ability to add your own mime-types and corresponding extensions.
