Build Your Own HERF Gun
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/07/1559238

James writes "Rostislav Persion from Voltage Labs has [0]successfully     constructed a HERF gun (a device like EMP but directional) in his home     that is capable of stalling cars at a distance and crashing computers     as well. He has videos of the device in action as it lights up LED's at     a distance and triggers motion detectors. Theres also a bunch of other     security stuff and science stuff which is quite interesting and     controversial, such as cell phone tracking, mood altering audio     signals, gyro guns, and other things of this nature. The site owner was     also featured in US News Magazine and MTV for some of his work." Links

Job Chances for Older Coders?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/09/1939241

emtboy9 asks: "As the semester winds to a close, exams fall upon us     students once again. Today, outside of one of my programming classes, I     overheard a conversation between a pair of middle aged women about     programming degrees (which they are involved in), and this made me     wonder. With the job market in IT being as pathetic as it is, what are     the real-world chances of someone who is taking a programming course     getting a job. In the places I have worked, all the coders were fairly     young. So the question is, what are the chances for an older person,     who is just now learning programming to get a job in that field?" Ask     Slashdot last touched on this topic back [0]in February of 2001. In the     intervening two years, have things gotten worse or better for those who     have been in the industry for a long time? Links

[0]Charles Manson writes "I'm sure you and your readers have already

I'm glad I only live a hundred miles away     becuase I'll be practically living there this summer. My favorite quote     of the article is 'If Hell has thrill rides, this brilliantly evil     machine should be one of them.'" We [2]mentioned the Cedar Point     coaster earlier. Surviving Tornadoes
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/09/1542210

Can we help you?X

SharkJumper writes "We here in central Oklahoma, USA are just climbing     out of the wreckage of [0]another series of tornadoes. Unlike the
[1]tornadoes of May 3rd, 1999, which killed 47 and injured more than
800, we now have much better tornado [2]information and prediction     technology. Largely because of this, there have been far fewer     injuries, and (as of this morning) no reported deaths. Here in the     greater Oklahoma City area, we can even [3]register our storm shelters     with the city. After a severe storm, GIS technology is used to create a     map for rescuers detailing location and type of the shelter as well as     emergency contact information. Rescuers can then use these maps to     search for survivors that may be trapped by debris in their shelters." Links

Since the database is loaded in RAM,     scanning is very fast. (Note: speed of scanning also depends on SAVI     settings and size of the file.) Uncle Unc 0.25.2
http://freshmeat.net/releases/122326/

Uncle Unc allows network admins and developers to keep track of many     services on a network in a flexible extendable fashion from a single     client program. In Uncle Unc, client implementation is carefully separated     from the core protocol, allowing clients to be implemented as GUI apps,     Web front-ends, or console programs. Once adapted to Uncle Unc, a     service becomes instantly accessible from any Unc-aware client. As new     service implementations are developed, every client implementation is     able to use them. The ever-expanding list of adapters currently covers     filesystems, Java class libraries, relational databases, log-files and     jini networks, and a feature-rich, fast desktop GUI client.
