Slashdot
StArSkY writes "The Age in Australia has an article today explaining the experiences of a Melbourne guy who purchased the Norah Jones CD tht is 'copy protected.' Unfortunately the [0]only way he could listen to the CD on Apple computers or Intel computers running XP was to copy the CD. This sort of defeats the purpose of the copy protection in the first place. Serious yet amusing at the same time." Links 0. http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2003/05/13/1052591771111.html
Lanlink Linking The Coasts
[0]Dan Bricker writes "A guy in Parma Heights, Ohio has a website to promote an idea of [1]linking the east coast to the west coast using standard off-the-shelf 802.11 equipment. He is aiming for a July 4th, 2006 first coast-to-coast ping. This project appears to be totally volunteer based, With no other stated reason than fun with pringle cans and bad weather, and do it just to do it. Can this be done? What real world applications does this have?" Links
Cornucopia Of Spam Bills
[0]frankie writes "[1]Anti-spam legislation is getting serious
attention from the U.S. Congress and [2]the media. Several bills are on
the front burner, including REDUCE, [3]CAN SPAM, and a RICO amendment.
However, the [4]strongest contender is a new bill sponsored by Billy
Tauzin (R-La.). It would allow spam from any company you've done
business with in the past 3 years, override stronger state laws, and
block private lawsuits. You can [5] complain now or complain more
later."

Lev13than writes "[0]Canada.com is reporting that some 20,000 Canadians
listed "Jedi" as their religion in the last national census (2001).
Apparently this is the offshoot of an Internet joke which [1]originated
in Australia a few years back. The results are interesting on a couple
of levels. While it show that some people may have too much time on
their hands, it also raises questions of privacy rights, Internet
activism and data integrity. Although it's not statistically
significant given Canada's population of 31.5 million, 20,000
lightsabre-wielding census-takers is nothing to sneeze at.
[2]StatsCan's full report (with no mention of Jedis) can be found

Presumably, this would be to compete against Nintendo's [3]Gameboy Advance, a clear winner in the handhelds department for years now. The games come on a new media format, half the size of a CD or DVD, holding 1.8 gigs. Other Gameboy competitors such as the Neo-Geo Pocket Color have suffered from small game libraries and the inability to get over the GBC/GBA's entrenched marketshare. Despite all of this, Sony isn't SNK, and obviously has a lot of muscle to push its way to where it wants to be. It will be an interesting fight." Links

Distributed Filesystems for Linux?
zoneball asks: "What would you use for a distributed file system for Linux? I have several GNU/Linix machines running at home, and wanted to be able to see more or less the same file tree (especially all the ~user directories) regardless of which machine I'm connected to, and where the traversal into the distributed file system space is largely transparent for the end-user. Are there any URLs or documents that compare the features, bugs, road map, stability of these and other distributed filesystems? Which offers the best stability and protection from future obsolescence?" What I Hate About Your Programming Language http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/13/1951205 [0]chromatic writes "Perl programmers like punctuation. Python programmers like indentation. Every programming language has its own syntax, stemming from its philosophy. [1]What I Hate About Your Programming Language examines the issues that shape languages as they grow. It's not advocacy, I promise." AIBO Robot Dog Soccer Competition
[0]BrianWCarver writes "The Washington Post has an article about teams of college students who program [1]Sony AIBO Robotic Dogs to play soccer against each other in teams of four. While [2]Beckham's job is not yet jeopardized, the cool thing from an AI perspective is that 'once the humans flip the switch, the robots are on their own.' They compete in [3]RoboCup whose stated goal is to 'by the year 2050, develop a team of fully autonomous humanoid robots that can win against the human world soccer champion team.' RoboCup also has competitions with wheeled soccer bots (of varying designs) and have a humanoid league in which the [4]Honda ASIMO appeared. The students in the above article are preparing for the [5]four-legged international championship coming up in July of 2003 in Padua, Italy." Links
