Neuros Gets (Beta) Linux Support
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/25/0314254

Jahf writes "/. reported awhile back that the folks at Digital Innovations (makers of the [0]Neuros portable MP3 player) were teaming up with [1]Xiph.org (makers of the Ogg Vorbis audio format) to release both native Linux support for synchronizing the Neuros and firmware support in the Neuros for Ogg Vorbis files. Today they announced in this forum posting that the native Linux client has reached beta. Nice to see this happen ... I can ditch my last Windows install (well, I'll keep it for a couple of games). It is a command-line utility, no amazing fancy UI, but I'm sure plenty of folks will work to remedy that in some fashion or another and I'm happier with a rock-solid command-line util than a buggy GUI app anyway since I already do all my ripping/encoding/freeDBing/etc from scripts in a shell (so I can just add this as the final step). Next on the list is Ogg Vorbis support ... not done yet but hopefully close. w00t!" Links

Recycling Parts From Dead Motherboards
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/25/0011217

An anonymous reader writes "I had this dead motherboard on my hands and I wanted to see what would happen if I cut out the clock generator and used it stand-alone. So I removed the Winbond chip from the motherboard (I cut out the section of PCB with a hacksaw), powered it up and it was still working. Add a display, a microcontroller and two switches, and I got a cheap frequency generator. Here's my [0]progress so far. Be kind to my Web skills, I'm really just a hardware monkey. It's not completed yet, but I just wanted to get the idea out there." Links

Do you need help?X

[0]Roland Piquepaille writes "How many phone calls, emails, voicemails,
memos or stories do you have to go through every day? Probably more than last year. And probably too much. This article from the Sydney Morning Herald looks at this problem of [1]information overload and how to deal with it. Here is a quick and not well-known fact: Website content management author Gerry McGovern says that something like 70 per cent of most websites goes unread. Despite that, when putting content on the web, "rarely do we ask the question: is anybody interested in reading that?" Good point. Check [2]this column for a summary if you don't have time -- and who has? -- to read the original article."

Blender Gets Audio Sequencing
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/24/2028240

Qbertino writes "The universal GPLd 3D tool [0] Blender that was [1] bought free by the Blender community not so long ago, has gotten [2] audio sequencing added to its feature set. This has been missing ever since the integrated Video NL (Non-Linear) Editor/Sequencer was introduced. The only other 3D package known for its integrated Video NLE is the proprietary [3]Houdini, which also runs under Linux but comes at something like $3000 for its small featureset. This finally gives the OSS community a lightweight [4]alternative to this and eases syncing 3D animation and audio a great deal. Audio sequencing will be integrated in the upcoming 2.28 release of Blender. Early adopters can
[5] download here."

California Could Get $500/Offense Spam Law http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/24/2132209

Bud Higgins writes "CNN has a story about a law the California Senate passed which will allow people to [0]sue spammers for $500 per unwanted email. This is one of the strictest anti-spam measures in the country and will set a precedent for other states to follow." Apple Clarifies 802.11g Controversy
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/24/208226

[0]Wireless Spider writes "A couple of days ago there was a controversy
over the 802.11g data rates and supposed changes in IEEE specification. Apple has clarified this controversy, stating that nothing has changed in the spec. It seems the article from Computerworld was somewhat misleading. Quote from an Apple Vice President: "802.11g is still a 54Mbit/sec standard," Bell told MacCentral. "802.11b is 11Mbit/sec, but your actual throughput is somewhere between 4 and 5-1/2Mbit/sec. The number that's quoted is the data rate that's used between the radios (raw data rate, which includes the protocols etc.)" After reading this article featured on Macworld, [1]802.11g transfer rate controversy meaningless, says Apple, it seems clear that the people at Computerworld didn't do their homework for the article featured on May 22. Also, there seems to be a lot of politics between 802.11g and a supporters, and that every article posted on the Internet about this subject might not be true, or could be politically motivated." NYC: Leverage Fiber, Offer Free Wi-Fi
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/24/1946208

[0]gpmap writes "A new study from the New York City Council is
recommending that the Big Apple throw open the competitive bidding process for its annual $130 million phone and Internet bill in order to
[1]leverage one of the most expansive -- and underused -- fiber optic
networks in the country. In so doing, New York City could not only cut its annual telecom bill, but would also be in a position to deploy wireless networking links as the "last mile" connecting metropolitan area networks, or MANs. In addition, it suggested using the fiber to deploy free Internet access with a Wi-Fi Network in Brooklyn's Prospect Park."

Freshmeat
SpamAssassin vs. Spastic
http://freshmeat.net/articles/view/852

SpamAssassin has emerged as the most popular antispam tool in the Open Source world. It has gained such momentum that it has even crossed over into the commercial world as SpamKiller by Network Associates, and other commercial products are also based on it. This article is a short comparison of real world results between two antispam tools, SpamAssassin and Spastic.

Active Spam Killer 2.4.1
http://freshmeat.net/releases/123867/

Active Spam Killer (ASK) protects your email account against spam by confirming the sender's email address before actual delivery takes place. The confirmation happens by means of a "confirmation message" that is automatically sent to all "unknown" users. Once the sender replies to that message (a simple reply will do), future emails from that person will be delivered immediately. You can also specify (regexp) addresses to be immediately accepted, rejected (with a nastygram) or ignored. The package also includes a utility to scan your old mailboxes and generate a list of emails to be accepted automatically.

The worst-case scenario

  • by Mark McGrew - Three years ago, I warned of an attempt by Big Software Companies to insinuate their control into your life, using your computer as their "foot in the door." Well, a lot has changed. Of the three players I named (IBM, AT&T, and Microsoft) only one remains a credible threat to Linux users: Microsoft, with SCO as its lackey.

IDC: Servers to make mild recovery

SAN JOSE, Calif.--Server sales are expected to return to modest growth by 2004 because of wider use of Linux and Windows, but the increase won't be enough to carry the bruised market to the level of its glory years of early 2000, IDC research shows.

In the escalating controversy that pits The SCO Group--owner of one of the original Unix operating systems--against Linux developers and distributors, Microsoft has come down, predictably, on the side of SCO. Yet, overlooked in the stir created when Microsoft recently licensed SCO's Unix for use in some of its products is the fact that Microsoft itself has been easing restrictions on its own code.

Tool Command Language (Tcl) is an interpreted language and very portable interpreter for that language. Tcl is embeddable and extensible, and has been widely used since its creation in 1988 by John Ousterhout. The Tcl Core Team is pleased to announce the 8.4.3 releases of the Tcl scripting language and the Tk toolkit. This is the third patch release of Tcl/Tk 8.4. Tcl/Tk 8.4.3 Release Announcement May 20, 2003 The Tcl Core Team is pleased to announce the 8.4.3 releases of the Tcl scripting language and the Tk toolkit. This is the third patch release of Tcl/Tk 8.4. More details can be found below. We would like to express our gratitude to all those who submit bug reports and patches. This information is invaluable in enabling us to identify and eliminate problems in the core. Where to get the new releases:

  • Tcl/Tk 8.4.3 sources are freely available as open source from the Tcl Developer Xchange web site at: http://www.tcl.tk/software/tcltk/8.4.html This web page also contains additional information about the releases, including new features and notes about installing and compiling the releases. Sources are always available from the Tcl SourceForge project's file distribution area: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=10894 Windows, Linux, Solaris and HP-UX binaries are available from: http://www.activestate.com/Tcl For additional information:
    • Please visit the Tcl Developer Xchange web site: http://www.tcl.tk/ This site contains a variety of information about Tcl/Tk in general, the core Tcl and Tk distributions, Tcl development tools, and much more. Thank you for your contributions:
      • As usual, this release includes contributions from the Tcl community. We have a page honoring these contributors at: http://www.tcl.tk/software/tcltk/contributors.html Summary of Changes since Tcl/Tk 8.4.2:
        • The following were the main changes in Tcl/Tk 8.4.3. A complete list can be found in the changes file at the root of the source tree. The more complete ChangeLog is also included with each source release. This is a patch release, so it primarily included bug fixes and corrections to erratic behavior. Below are only the most notable changes. * Correct case-insensitive unicode string comparison in Tcl_UniCharNcasecmp * Corrected loading of tclpip8x.dll on Win9x * Correct Tcl_SubstObj handling of \x00 bytes * Correct wide int issues in 'format' * Remove assumption that file times and longs are the same size * Allow Tcl to differentiate between reparse points which are symlinks and mounted drives on Windows * Bad command count on TCL_OUT_LINE_COMPILE * Store pointers to notifier funcs in a struct to work around some platform linker issues * Load correct (non-)debug dll for dde or registry * Fixing ObjMakeUpvar's lookup algorithm for the created local variable * Make sure that tclWideIntType is defined and somewhat sensible everywhere * Corrected inconsistent results of [string is integer] observed on systems where sizeof(long) != sizeof(int) * Substantial changes to the Windows clock synch phase-locked loop in a quest for improved loop stability * Made changes so that the "wideInt" Tcl_ObjType is defined on all platforms, even those where TCL_WIDE_INT_IS_LONG is defined. Also made the Tcl_Value struct have a wideValue field on all platforms. Potential incompatibility for TCL_WIDE_INT_IS_LONG platforms because that struct changes size *** POTENTIAL INCOMPATIBILITY *** * Catch any errors returned by the Windows functions handling TLS ASAP instead of waiting to get some mysterious crash later on due to bogus pointers * Correct 'glob -path {[tcl]} *', where leading special character instead lists files in '/'. Bug only occurs on Windows where '\' is also a directory separator. * Fixed memory leak in threaded allocator on Windows caused by treating cachePtr as a TLS index * Ensure cd is thread-safe * Correct mem leak on closing a Windows serial port * Prevent string repeat crash when overflow sizes were given * Worked around the issue of realpath() not being thread-safe on Mac OS X by defining NO_REALPATH for threaded builds on Mac OS X * Correct handling of the gb2312 encoding by making it an alias of the euc-cn encoding and creating a gb2312-raw encoding for the original. Most uses of gb2312 really mean euc-cn. * Corrected another putenv() copy behavior problem when compiling on Windows and using Microsoft's runtime * Stop buttons from being very wide when a tk_messageBox has a lot of content on Unix * Fixed crash in [winfo server] on Mac OS X * Correct compound button display in the disabled state * Correct crash when generating postscript for a single-line polygon (point) with no color * Updated French message catalog * Use gb2312-raw as the alias for gb2312* charset fonts on unix -- Tcl Core Team and Maintainers Jeff Hobbs, Tcl Core Release Manager

SCons 0.14 adds Java support, Autoconf-like functionality http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=279029

Call Pantek today for Open Source Technical Support at 1-877-546-8934 - 24/7/365X

SCons alpha release 0.14 is now available for download. SCons is a software construction tool (build tool, or substitute for Make) implemented in Python, based on the winning design in the Software Carpentry build tool competition (in turn based on the Cons build tool). This release most notably adds support for Java builds (javac, javah, rmic and jar), and adds integrated Autoconf-like functionality for finding #include files and libraries. This release also contains significant performance improvements from previous releases. IMPORTANT: Release 0.14 contains the following interface changes: - Tool specifications no longer take a "platform" argument. - Emitter functions in Builders are now passed Node objects, not strings, for all targets and sources. - New TargetSignatures() and SourceSignatures() functions have been added to replace SetBuildSignatureType() and SetContentSignatureType(). - The Export() function and the exported variables argument of SConscript() now search for variables using the same rules as Python: local first, then global. - The SetJobs() and GetJobs() functions have been deprecated in favor of using SetOption('num_jobs', num) and GetOption('num_jobs'). - Callable expansions of construction variables in a command line now take a fourth "for_signature" argument that is set when the expansion is being called to generate a build signature. - Construction variables for building a target are now frozen when the Builder is called; later changes to the Environment do not necessarily affect how the target is build. See the release notes for more information about these changes. This release adds the following features: - Support for the Java tools javac, javah, rmic and jar has been added. - A Configure() function has been added that supports a lot of functionality similar to Autoconf. - A new PLATFORM construction variable stores a string representing the platform on which SCons is being run. - Dependencies may now be specified on in-core Python values. - Help text can now be sorted arbitrarily. - New $TARGET and $SOURCE attributes: ".posix" expands to a path name with forward slashes as separators, even on Win32 systems; ".srcpath" expands to a path to the source of a file in a BuildDir; ".srcdir" expands to a path to the BuildDir itself. - A new clear() method resets a Node's state for re-use by continuous integration build interfaces. - Support for using Ghostscript to convert Postscript to PDF files has been added. - A stand-alone "Alias" function has been added. - Import('*') will now import everything that's been Export()ed.

  • New SetOption() and GetOption() functions support setting and fetching various command-line options within an SConscript file. - The Tool() function now adds tool names to a $TOOLS variable, which may be used to examine what tools are available. - The C preprocessor "#import" statement is now supported. - Newly-built .dll files can now be registered with the Windows registry using regsvr32. - An IDL scanner has been added. - A builder for Windows type library (.tlb) files from IDL files. The following fixes have been added: - Cygwin fixes: Use the .dll extension for shared libraries; don't use -fPIC when compiling shared libraries; use 'rm' to remove files; use MSVC '@' syntax for linking long command-lines. - The SYSTEMROOT environment variable on Win32 systems is now automatically propagated to the execution ENV environment. - Remote CVS file names are now checked out using Posix-style path names. - Trying to expand an out-of-range subscript for a construction variable like $TARGETS or $SOURCES now interpolates the null string. - SCons now correctly links or duplicates files in subsidiary BuildDir() directories. - SCons now reports "Cleaning targets ..." when the -c option is used. - The "Entering directory" message now quotes the directory name exactly like Make does. - Export() now works correctly for local Python variables, and can accept a dictionary as an argument. - PDB files now get put in a BuildDir() correctly. Performance has been improved as follows: - Unnecessary redundant signature calculations for command lines and Nodes have been eliminated. Development tests suggest this may speed up builds up to 30% or more.

TuxTyping 1.5.0 released
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=277737

After over a year of development with no releases, we are pleased to present Tux Typing 2 "Preview" release. Most of the internals have been rewritten with a focus on extensibility and internationalization. Creating a language pack is now as simple as creating a file for translations (lang.po file), maybe finding a font [1], setting up how the keyboard maps to the characters [2], and finally creating some word lists. TuxTyping is an educational typing tutorial game for children starring Tux, the Linux Penguin. It is graphical and requires SDL. It is free software copyrighted under the Gnu GPL. There is a new style of game "Comet Zap" and the start of tutor components with the new "Practice" mode. We really look forward to getting feedback about what parents/teachers/students/kids think about the new work. This release has a few rough edges, but we feel that it is time to let the world see what has been happening with Tux Typing. We have forums, mailing lists, and most importantly windows and linux builds are available at http://tuxtype.sf.net We are already hard at work at 1.5.1 and hope to have it released soon making it even easier for translators and users! Thanks, Jesse Andrews - jdandr2@uky.edu Calvin Arndt - calarndt@tux4kids.net Notes: [1] We are using a font that has support for many languages (Dansk, English, French, Spanish, ...) So if the included font works with your language, you don't need to find a new font. [2] for instance in the default (English) language pack, we set up the game so if the student presses 'A' or 'a' it both works for "A".
