There will be sensors to monitor heartrate and blood-pressure, built-in tourniquets, a HUD to connect to GPS info, overhead maps, infrared and starlight cameras, and even the venerable M16 rifles are slated for an overhaul." Fast TCP To Increase Speed Of File Transfers? http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/06/05/0038250

Wrighter writes "There's a new story at Yahoo about a new version of TCP called Fast TCP that [0]might help increase the speed of file transfers. Sounds like it basically estimates the maximum efficient speed of your network, and then goes for it, dumping a lot of time-consuming error checking." There's also [1]an article at the New Scientist with some additional information. Links

Do Online Schools Provide A Quality Education? http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/30/0051202

An anonymous reader asks: "I am attending an online college for the first time … and I am starting to get a bad taste in my mouth about the amount of effort that some of my professors are putting forward in my courses. I feel like some of them are “skating” and all I am paying for is a book, a posted syllabus, and a final exam. Have any of you been to an online school, and what where your experiences like? How did you feel about the quality of education you were getting?"

Microsoft Patents Interactive Entertainment http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/06/04/188215

An anonymous reader writes "Embedded-Watch is carrying a story regarding the award of patent number [0]6,571,390 to [1]Microsoft. The patent would seem to cover pretty much [2]any implementation of a video-on-demand system that you (or at least I) can think of. Read for yourself to decide whether this patent either is not original work or is blatantly obvious to the most casual observer. The patent could certainly be invalidated by the courts on either point, but that'd take a fight in court that won't be cheap." Links

changedfiles 0.9.6
http://freshmeat.net/releases/125032/

Confused? Frustrated?X

changedfiles is a framework for filesystem replication, security monitoring, and/or automatic file transformations--essentially any application where you'd poll files or directories and either do something to them or send them somewhere else (or both). The difference is, the kernel tells you when they change, instead of you having to poll. Besides which, it's an easy real time FTP push mirror to one or multiple sites. The changedfiles system consists of two parts: a kernel module (works with Linux kernel version 2.4) which reports to a device whenever a file on the filesystem changes, and a daemon which runs in user space and can be configured to do almost any action when a change to a file matching the one of the patterns it looks for is reported. The kernel module is SMP safe and has been tested on Intel, PowerPC, and Alpha.

CSound 4.24.0
http://freshmeat.net/releases/124954/

It consists of an orchestra- and score-driven executable, written in C for portability. Since Csound is a computational language, it is highly flexible and efficient; complexity is gained only at the expense of computation power. Basically, Csound reads some files and creates the result as a sound file on disk or, on faster machines, in real time through a DAC.

DKMS 0.31.04
http://freshmeat.net/releases/125020/

Do you need help?X

DKMS (Dynamic Kernel Module Support) is a framework where device driver source can reside outside the kernel source tree so that it is very easy to rebuild modules as you upgrade kernels. This allows Linux vendors to provide driver drops without having to wait for new kernel releases (as a stopgap before the code can make it back into the kernel), while also taking out the guesswork for customers attempting to recompile modules for new kernels. For veteran Linux users it also provides some advantages since a separate framework for driver drops will remove kernel releases as a blocking mechanism for distributing code.

Gled 1.2.0
http://freshmeat.net/releases/125005/

Don't know where to look next?X

Gled is an implementation of a hierarchic server/client model written in C++, having an outside form of an object oriented framework. The master server exposes its object space to its first-level clients, which in turn provide mirroring facilities to second-level clients and also export their own object spaces. Each client therefore plays a role of a client, a proxy, and a server. Infrastructure for propagation and broadcasting of method invocation requests is provided and is general enough to allow for an efficient access control. Synchronization of object spaces is achieved via streaming of object graphs and a time-ordered delivery of method invocation requests. Objects can acquire their own threads to perform different tasks such as computation, data acquisition & analysis or dynamic visualization. The obtained results can be pushed to other computing nodes or storage devices. As threads are spawned and controlled by standard method invocation requests, schedulers & job control mechanisms spawning across a whole Gled cluster can easily be implemented. On viewer level, Gled features automatically generated GUI widgets (using FLTK) and a sophisticated 3D rendering infrastructure (OpenGL).

It also produces birth brief (pedigree) charts and selective ancestor charts, and incorporates a simple data entry interface to create/edit/view GEDCOM files.
