can adapt to their users. In short, they seek to become real

computing: "Challenges to sentient computing include the seamless
integration of wireless networks, the spread of sensors throughout
products and the environment, the accurate provision of location data,
and the ability of sentient systems to merge vast volumes of widely
disseminated data and customize its delivery for users. Other problems
researchers will have to tackle include scalability, the development of
cooperative file systems, and sentient applications' ability to find

Build a Multi-Output MP3 Server?

speakers in every room of the house and pulling some massive amount of
cables in the walls. I also want to control and send the output to each
set of speakers from the same source, and was thinking that a PC, with
4-6 soundcards, would do the trick, and there are of course a couple of
questions I have. What kind of hardware would be required to be able to
stream up to six different MP3's through six soundcards at the same
time ? Can it even be done? What kind of software can be used to do it?
Which OS? How can it be remotely controlled? With respect to the last
question, I'm thinking about mounting a couple of flat displays around
the house connected to old PC's that run some sort of connection (VNC
maybe) to the mp3 server." This is a topic Ask Slashdot tackled
[1]three years ago. Now, with applications like [2]Ardour showing off
the power of Open Source frameworks like [3]JACK, it seems like
building such a machine might not be as hard as it once was. For those
of you who have managed to build something like this, what did you do
and what hurdles did you have to navigate before things were working?

Biometric Face Recognition Exploit

exploit to which most biometric systems are probably vulnerable. He
developed an algorithm which allows a fairly high quality image of a
person to be regenerated from a face recognition template. Three
commercial face rec. algorithms were tested and in all cases the image
could masquerade to the algorithm as the target person. Here are links
to a [1]talk and a [2]paper. Unfortunately, biometric templates are
currently considered to be non-identifiable, much like a password hash.
This means that [3]legislation gets passed to require hundreds of
millions of people to have their biometrics encoded onto their
passports. This kind of vulnerability could mean that anyone who reads
these documents has access to the holders fingerprint, iris images,
etc."
