Duct Tape Goes Minature
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/04/225206

[0]metal_llama writes "There is a story in the [1]Milwaukee Journal
Sentinel about a man, [2]Christopher Blummel, who "has a vision for a     better world - one where every man would carry in his wallet a small     cellophane packet containing a product that can come in handy in an     emergency. Duct tape." This is exactly what I've always wanted: an     ever-handy supply of duct tape."

From predictions of eBay's purchase of Oracle to discussions of the     failings of open source licenses, O'Reilly's certainly not reserved. I     couldn't help but be reminded of the rise of this site and

Microsoft Considers $10 Billion Dividend http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/04/1923250

Dreadnougat writes "Microsoft is [0]considering paying out a $10     billion dividend, the largest corporate payout ever. Cynics (ok, anyone     reading /.) might note that Bill Gates stands to make $1.18 billion     himself off the $1 a share dividend, in comparison to the $95 million     he makes in a normal year off the regular 8 cents a share dividend." Gnumeric Turns 5
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/04/1844203

[0]Jody Goldberg writes "Five years ago, Miguel [1]committed the first
code for Gnumeric to CVS. In a testament to the quality of the code     several lines are still in use. Since that time the project has grown     to more than 300,000 lines and now supports all 325 [2]worksheet     functions in MS Excel, plus almost 100 more. This seemed like a good     time to thank all the people who have contributed to Gnumeric over the     years. We're about to start the run up to the the next stable release     which will be out in a few weeks and we look forward to continuing work     with GNOME, and the community at large to produce the most powerful     spreadsheet in the world."

NASA Benchmarks the New G5 Powermac
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/04/1813255

sockit2me9000 writes "Well [0]NASA's Langley Research Center recently
[1]benchmarked the new G5 dual 2ghz Powermac against a dual 1ghz
Xserve, a dual 1.25 ghz Powermac, a Pentium4 2 ghz, and a Pentium4 2.66     ghz. To make things fair, the second processor in the G5 was switched     off, as well as the other dual sysytems. Then, they all ran Jet3d. Even     with un-optimized code and one processor, the G5 performance is     impressive."

Government Information Awareness
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/04/1313222

gbjbaanb writes "Wired News is [0]reporting about the GIA, software     inspired by the TIA program. 'Researchers at the MIT Media Lab unveiled     the [1]Government Information Awareness, or GIA, website Friday. Using     applications developed at the Media Lab, GIA collects and collates     information about government programs, plans and politicians from the     general public and numerous online sources. Currently the database     contains information on more than 3,000 public figures. The premise of     GIA is that if the government has a right to know personal details     about citizens, then citizens have a right to similar information about     the government.'"

Linus Says Pre-2.6 is Coming
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/04/138231

[0]gomoX writes "As seen on [1]C|Net , Linus has announced that the
pre-2.6 series will be starting in early July. Despite not having been     able to meet the release goal for 2.6 in June 2003, the next stable     version is not as far away as you may think. You can take your guess     based on the fact there was a 9 month period between first test version     of 2.4 and the official release of 2.4.0 on January 2001." Links

Project Gutenberg's 32nd Birthday
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/04/134216

[0]David Moynihan writes "July 4th marks the 32nd anniversary of that
day in 1971 when [1]Michael Hart first sped an all-caps version of the
[2]Declaration of Independence to anyone and everyone then on what
later became the web, thus founding [3]Project Gutenberg. Thanks to an     army of volunteers and the [4]Distributed Proofreaders, this is the     last year PG will have fewer than 10,000 titles. Strangely,
[5]Microsoft picked this dual anniversary of literacy and freedom to
re-launch their [6]Reader product, with three [7]free bestsellers a     week, if you activate the new version with Passport, sign a EULA, etc.     Real reason for the upgrade might be that the DRM on MS's old Reader     was [8]cracked. If you're not into giving away data, or are running a     system other than Windows, maybe you could take the time to tell a     friend about free books online, or even help out by visiting the
[4]Distributed Proofers and editing one page per day."

Hubble Catches Some Cosmic Fireworks
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/04/136218

[0]Roland Piquepaille writes "On this Fourth of July, it's usual -- at
least in the U.S. -- to watch fireworks. But I want to invite you to     see very special ones, celestial fireworks discovered by the Hubble     Space Telescope. [1]Astronomy Magazine has the story. "In a newly     released image, the Hubble Space Telescope peers into a neighboring     galaxy to capture a gorgeous view of a supernova remnant called LMC N     49. Also known as DEM L 190, the nebula lies within the Large     Magellanic Cloud approximately 160,000 light-years away." Read [2]this     summary for more details and a nice illustration from the Hubble     Heritage Team. You can find additional tons of information at this

A Game of Thrones
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/03/1445206

Can we help you?X

[0]Dark Paladin writes "Recently, I asked readers to recommend some
good books that were out there. There were crows for the usual crowd,     like Terry Pratchet, Nail Gaiman, David Eddings, Terry Brooks, so on     and so forth. But one name that kept coming up over and over again as a     "must read" was R. R. Martin and the book "A Game of Thrones". So after     the umpteenth "you've got to check it out or I'll burn your hat", I     decided to give it a shot. And discovered one of the best read fantasy     novels I've read in a decade. The story is your base fantasy stuff -     "long ago, some bad things happened, but things are good - but watch     out - the bad times are coming again!" Read on for the rest of his     review.

This allows Linux     vendors to provide driver drops without having to wait for new kernel     releases (as a stopgap before the code can make it back into the     kernel), while also taking out the guesswork for customers attempting     to recompile modules for new kernels. For veteran Linux users it also     provides some advantages since a separate framework for driver drops     will remove kernel releases as a blocking mechanism for distributing     code.

Kernel Mode Linux 2.5.74_001 (For Linux 2.5) http://freshmeat.net/releases/128253/

Kernel Mode Linux is a technology which enables the execution of user     programs in a kernel mode. In Kernel Mode Linux, user programs can     access kernel address space directly. Unlike kernel modules, user     programs are executed as ordinary processes (except for their privilege     level), so scheduling and paging are performed as usual. Although it     seems dangerous, the safety of the kernel can be ensured through such     methods as static type checking, software fault isolation, and so     forth.
