Slashdot
Thanks to Wired News for posting an article [0]discussing the rise of machinima, which are "animated movies.. utilizing the [real-time] 3-D graphics engines of games like Quake or Unreal." The article cites prominent machinima such as Jake Hughes' [1]Anachronox: The Movie and the [2]machinima-created music video for Zero 7's 'In The Waiting Line', and according to Bill Rehbock of Nvidia, "..machinima methods, in addition to providing a hobby for aspiring filmmakers, are starting to be used in the creative industries far more than is apparent. For example, George Lucas' Industrial Light and Magic is using the Unreal engine to storyboard Star Wars movies." There's also a significant cash prize for machinima makers as part of Epic's [3]Make Something Unreal competition we [4]mentioned a few weeks back. Links

Switch On For Powered Data Networks
ReLik writes "The BBC has an article regarding [0]power supply via networks. 'Instead of needing adapters, computer networks could soon be supplying the devices they interconnect with both data and power. Some makers of network equipment are already putting the power via data cable system into their products. The basic plugs for computer networks are the same all over the world, raising the possibility that powered data cables could become a universal back-up power supply.'" sstree 0.5
sstree makes it as easy as possible for developers to implement the commonly-recurring need of presenting tree-structure information in a Web-based user interface. This is done with a few very simple JavaScript code examples. Since the starting point is simple, it is easy to build on. Key features include collapse/expand functionality, a clean HTML structure, and cross-browser compatability. Visual appearance is handled by CSS, and degraded mode is still usable in browsers without JavaScript.

The SQL configuration is done in the standard syslog.conf file for easy administration and configuration. Also included is a set of sample PHP scripts to query the data from the syslog database. In a large environment, you can set up a central logging server, or configure a secure syslog environment that will make it very difficult to tamper with the syslog data.
The Life of a Geek 0.34 (Preview)
The Life of a Geek is very silly console game in which you (a geek) must keep a computer running until you graduate college. Surf around on the Internet, battling hackers to gain money and better security for your box. Drink lots of caffeine to keep yourself awake, since if you go to sleep, you risk an attack on your computer. Save up money to take a month-long college course and improve your education, but remember that paying attention to schoolwork also leaves your computer open to attack. Find a quick job for a month at places like fast-food restaurants and grocery stores, but remember again that time away from your computer leaves it open to attack. Virii may also appear on your computer, weakening your computer's health points regularly until cleaned.
