Australian Linux User Group Fights Back Against SCO http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/23/067202

ashitaka writes "The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that an Open Source group has gone on the offensive in response to SCO's latest demands that Linux users must buy a Unixware license to avoid any possible future unpleasantries. '[0]Open Source Victoria today [1]filed a complaint with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, asking it to investigate SCO's activities in light of 'unsubstantiated claims and extortive legal threats for money' against possibly hundreds of thousands of Australians.' I especially like the last bit: 'One feels that this whole fiasco is the IT industry equivalent of a Nigerian scam or internet extortion ploy.' Oh yeah.." Links

Next Wave Of Hard Drive Tech: Perpendicular Recording http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/23/0013235

angrytuna writes "New serial technologies are set to replace standard SCSI and ATA (Advanced Technology Attachment) interfaces over the next two years, even as hard-disk drive manufacturers prepare for an entirely new form of bit storage. [0]Perpendicular recording will replace longitudinal recording in storage devices, placing bits on end instead of lying them parallel on the disc surface, thus dramatically increasing the possible storage density." No Doom 3 This Year?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/22/2330250

[0]Ant writes "According to [1]an article at Blue's News: 'Though id
Software basically invented the idea of using "when it's done" as a release date, and thus [2]did not specify a release date when DOOM 3 was announced, many have been assuming that the game would be available for this year's holiday season. Now [3]a report on HomeLAN Fed cites Activision's 2003 release calendar and quarterly financial conference call.. [saying that] Activision admits that this matter is entirely in id's hands, but that they are not expecting the game this year, and have it "penciled" on their calendars for fiscal Q4 (Jan-March) 2004.' Additionally, Quake IV is now due in Fiscal 2005 (which begins April 2004)."

phreakmonkey writes "Here's an interesting change of pace- According to today's [0]Boston Globe, MIT and Boston College have both [1]refused to turn over the identities of students to the RIAA under subpoenas. Citing failure of compliance with court rules and student privacy concerns, both colleges have refused to give out the names, addresses, or phone numbers of students based on their Kazaa screen names and IP addresses. Sell Your Music on iTunes Music Store
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/22/1428201

[0]Photo_Designer writes "[1]CD Baby is now accepting music to be sold
via digital distibution through iTunes Music Store, Listen.com and others. Their cut is 9 percent. The artists get 91 percent of the sale and retain all the rights to their music. There is a $40 fee for each album submitted. It will be interesting to see how much indie music gets on and how it does. Imagine being a touring indie band and be able to tell people to go to iTunes and buy your songs; it seems this could be a huge boon to musicians wanting to circumvent/boycott/avoid/destroy the RIAA." Note that this is not an agreement to get on iTMS or any other service, only for CD Baby to be your distributor. iTMS can still reject your sorry attempt at fame.

Getting Back Into Shape While At The Office? http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/22/0246244

rhuntley12 writes "Personally, I sit at a computer desk for 10 hours a day with very little actual work. I've also started to get a little belly and out of shape. I know it's real bad in my office, especially with all the beer I consume. What do you do to stay in shape? Any secrets? Recently I've started to do sit ups, push ups, and running up and down the stairs. I get a lot of odd looks, and would prefer something that doesn't make the whole office stare at me. I've looked through some websites with equipment, but it's all serious equipment I can't/won't lug into work. Any suggestions?"

It neatly uses the OS vm_copy facility to "get around" thread safety issues when doing copy-on-write and reference counting. As a result, std::vector can be copied, passed back by value and enlarged without the same overheads.

Newsforge Reports
20% Linux is all we need
http://newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/07/15/140205

  • By Robin 'Roblimo' Miller - Let's get over Linus Torvalds' old "world domination" goal (which was a joke), stop gnashing our teeth over The Evils of Microsoft, and think rationally about what percentage of the world's desktops we really need to switch to Linux. I figure 10% would be a minimum, and 20% would be more than enough. Enough for what? For everything we really want.

Open Asia: Japan and Korea embrace open source http://newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/07/11/2056234

  • by Frederick Noronha - A country-by-country survey of the state of Free Software in Asia is difficult, not least because of the disparate natures of Asian societies, the wide use of languages other than English, and the lack of international reporting on technical issues. However, we'll begin looking this week at recent initiatives in two countries, Korea and Japan, and follow up in the future with views from other regions.
