There Is No Single Instant In Time
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/03/029213

[0]tekkieRich writes "Some interesting news from the world of physics.
Supposedly, [1]in this paper, the author answers some of the major     paradoxes (achilles vs. the turtle and Zeno) concerning our     understanding of time. 'Impressed with the work is Princeton physics     great, and collaborator of both Albert Einstein and Richard Feynman,     John Wheeler, who said he admired Lynds' "boldness," while noting that     it had often been individuals Lynds' age that "had pushed the frontiers     of physics forward in the past."'"

snopes.com's David Mikkelson Interviewed http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/03/0116258

[0]pipingguy writes "[1]Online Journalism Review interviews [2]David
Mikkelson of the [3]Urban Legends Reference Pages. While the Internet     has taken its share of knocks for helping scammers perpetrate e-mail     and Web hoaxes (the [4]Bambi hunt reportedly was staged to sell videos     on the proprietor's Web site), not enough credit is given to the folks     who are using the Internet to debunk them. Snopes.com is the work of     the husband-and-wife team of David and Barbara Mikkelson, who have     taken their passion for urban myths to the Web since 1995." Links

Networking Technology At Work In Rural India http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/03/0032258

abhikhurana writes "Whenever a news item about a plan to offer aid to a     poor community in a developing country to set up an Internet backbone     or any similar story is posted on Slashdot, there is always a debate     among the readers if there is any point in spending so much money on     such activities when people in such communities don't have basic     amenities like clean drinking water. So when I came acorss [0]this     story, I decided to post it to slashdot. It's about [1]new software     developed by [2]Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, which allows     video conferencing on low-bandwidth connections, and the impact this     technology is having on the small rural communities where it has been     deployed."

My Pal Mickey -- Interactive Theme Park Doll http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/02/2320249

[0]Dan Howland writes "Big Ruxpin is Watching You: Once again, [1]The
Firesign Theatre's [2]I Think We're All Bozos on this Bus proves itself     to be the science-fiction story where the most stuff came true. If you     recall, a hacker named Clem traveled through the Future Fair, followed     by computer generated Holy-Grams who popped up and said things like,     'Why not try [WALL OF SCIENCE], 'cause it's my favorite!' Leave it to     Disney to perfect that spooky technology with [3]My Pal Mickey, an     interactive talking plush doll that knows where it is inside Walt     Disney World, and tells you trivia as you move through the park. Ah ha,     but even better (at least from Disney's standpoint) is that, just like     the Holy-Grams, My Pal Mickey feeds the info back into the central     computer system, so Doctor Memory can track people's movements through     the park in realtime. (Of course, these data will be skewed because     they only track people who buy the dolls...) Here is [4]another link,     with the interesting, Asimov-like sentence: 'He has a strong sense of     self-preservation, and reminds you to put him some place safe when you     get near water play areas, or on wet rides.'" Science and Math For Adults?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/02/2134237

Peter Trepan writes "Like most Americans, I made it through high-school     and college without a thorough understanding of major scientific and     mathematical concepts. I'm trying to remedy this situation both for     personal betterment and so I can supplement my own kids' education. The     problem is, most textbooks are not designed to convey an understanding     of the subject, but to squeeze in all the 'facts' required by state     law. I'm looking for books that don't just tell me an equation or a     concept works, but also explain *why*. Would you please list books that     have helped you gain a greater understanding of the basic concepts of     algebra, chemistry, calculus, physics, and other core areas of     science?" This is similar to an [0]earlier question, but with a broader     focus.

Universities Mull Official Role In Music Distribution http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/02/192231

An anonymous reader writes "News.com.com is reporting that Universities     are considering [0]ways to bring legal Internet jukeboxes to dorm     rooms, including entering deals with commercial service providers that     would see online music charges included alongside tuition fees or     picked up by the schools themselves." Reader ajkst1 adds that "meetings     were held between college representatives, music industry reps, and     online music services such as Apple's iTunes Music Store, Pressplay,     and Listen.com. The discussion wasn't about why they should do it, but     about how they should do it. Per-user licenses or a general fee to     students were discussed to make it look like the music was free. I'm     broke, so free is good. Paying more to go to school is bad." Links

http://newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/02/2144241

  • by James Hutton - I work in a small retail electronics store that has been selling cheap Linux PCs for the last 8 months or so. It was an experiment that returned mediocre results. The hardware wasn't a problem -- it was cheap but solid hardware, and exactly what a lot of people wanted for basic word processing, email, etc. Even the fact that it wasn't running Windows wasn't a problem, people are prepared to overlook that if it's going to do ...
