Microsoft Money Leads To Street-Legal Porsche 959s http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/16/0319255

[0]Ken Greenebaum writes "Soon there will be a 'new' Porsche 959 racing
down highway 520 in Redmond. This [1]article in autoweek describes how     Bill Gates, Paul Allen and Ralph Lauren teamed up with Bruce Canepa to     make the 959 street legal. Best quote: Gates 'suggested to Canepa that     perhaps they could federalize the car by buying a number of sacrificial     959s to "crash and test."' They modernized and increased the     performance of the already super car to: 575HP making the 15 year old     cars race to 60 in 3.3 seconds with a top speed of 215MPH." Links

Xbox Auto-Update Blocks Linux Usage
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/16/0310224

An anonymous reader writes "According to [0]The Inquirer, Microsoft has     used their Xbox Live Vole System to patch any Xboxes that access     it....without asking their permission before installing the software.     However, in this occurrence, the bug appears to be the 'dashboard bug'     that allows Linux to be easily installed on an Xbox. Further, according     to [1]The Xbox Linux Project, users who do not have an Xbox Live     account may find themselves being patched without permission as well.     If a gamer tries to access any part of a game that uses Xbox Live, the     console can 'phone home' and install the patches anyway. While patching     bugs can be a nice touch to poor software, I don't know if I feel     comfortable with ANYONE installing software on my hardware without     asking permission first."

Resolving Everything: VeriSign Adds Wildcards http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/16/0034210

[0]DragonHawk writes "As of a little while ago (it is around 7:45 PM US
Eastern on Mon 15 Sep 2003 as I write this), VeriSign added a wildcard     A record to the .COM and .NET TLD DNS zones. The IP address returned is     64.94.110.11, which reverses to [1]sitefinder.verisign.com. What that     means in plain English is that most mis-typed domain names that would     formerly have resulted in a helpful error message now results in a     VeriSign advertising opportunity. For example, if my domain name was     'somecompany.com,' and somebody typed 'soemcompany.com' by mistake,     they would get VeriSign's advertising." Read on below for some more     information.

Does C# Measure Up?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/15/2057209

An anonymous reader queries: "Windows::Developer is offering [0]a     detailed, quantitative examination [free login required] of C#'s     performance versus Java, C, C++ and D. 'Overall the results were     surprising, although perhaps unexciting, in showing that C# (and to a     less extent Java) is, to a good degree, on a par in efficiency terms     with its older and (presumed to be) more efficient counterparts C and     C++ at least as far as the basic language features compared in this     analysis are concerned,' writes the author, Matthew Wilson. I'm only an     amateur coder, and confess to not understanding most of the two-part     article. I'd love to hear how true programmers view his results, which     are too wide-ranging to summarize easily here. How about it Slashdot,     as this special edition asks, 'Can C# keep up with compiled languages     like C, C++, and D or byte-code based Java?'" Links

Has P2P Become a Passing Fad?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/15/2033232

[0]plasticmillion asks: "As the RIAA launches increasingly rabid
attacks against P2P networks and users, pundits continue to debate the     future of P2P. On the one hand, some argue that P2P is just a clever     way to escape detection from copyright owners, like in [1]this recent     Slashdot story. Others, like Clay Shirky, make a strong case that     processing is destined to move to the 'edges' of the network. I'm     curious to know what Slashdot readers think: is P2P the start of a     major new trend that is just getting started, or is it a passing fad     that will fade once legal client/server systems for media distribution     finally take hold? If the former, which of the supposed advantages of     P2P over client/server systems are really significant?" Links

OSSP l2 0.9.3
http://freshmeat.net/releases/135974/

OSSP l2 is a C library providing a very flexible and sophisticated Unix     logging facility. It is based on the model of arbitrary number of     channels, stacked together in a top-down data flow tree structure with     filtering channels in internal nodes and output channels on the leave     nodes. Channel trees can be either constructed manually through     lower-level API functions or all at once with a single API function     controlled by a compact syntactical description of the channel tree.     For generating log messages, a printf-style formatting engine is     provided which can be extended through callback functions. The data     flow inside the channel tree is controlled by logging message severity     levels which are assigned to each individual channel.
