Digital Ink On Billboards
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/17/0156239

cdneng2 writes "The [0]New York Times has this article [1]on a     revolutionary new billboard. It uses digital ink, versus the typical     CRT, LCD, Neon, or Plasma displays that are so prominent on the newer     billboards that wastes electricity. From the article: 'By creating a     paste made of tiny helix-shaped particles that can be minutely     manipulated with electric charges to reflect light in highly specific     ways, [2]Magink can produce surfaces that look like paper but behave     like electronic screens, rendering high-resolution, full-color images     without ink - or, as Magink executives like to refer to the process,     with digital ink.' The billboard can display images at 70 frames per     second." You can find [3]more articles on the billboard technology on     the Magink website.

SBC Refuses To Name File-Sharing Users
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/17/0147233

[0]securitas writes "The [1]New York Times reports that Internet
provider [2]SBC Communications has refused to identify computer users     accused by the RIAA of file-sharing copyrighted material. SBC is the     largest high-speed DSL provider with over 3 million subscribers. It     continues to refuse a response to the 300 subpoenas served by the RIAA     despite a [3]ruling against Verizon earlier this year. 'We are going to     challenge every single one of these that they file until we are told     that our position is wrong as a matter of law,' said James D. Ellis,     general counsel for SBC. He continues, '...We've got a long heritage in     which we have always taken a harsh and hard rule on protecting the     privacy of our customers' information.' Mirrors in [4]Tuscaloosa and
[5]Lakeland."

IT Training in the Military?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/17/0034226

firehzd1 asks: "[0]Yesterday's article about the new Czar of Security     for the Department of Homeland Security raises a very important     question, especially lately. What type of opportunities are there for     IT work in the military/government. It seems every article I read is     bashing the govt/military for terrible IT decisions/systems but I never     hear the other side of the story. How bout we hear from those in the     field that can give us a idea of what it is like behind the other side     of the heavily armed gate?"

SCO Claims $15,300,000 From SCOsource
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/17/0015207

Hollins writes "Yesterday, [0]SCO filed their [1]latest 10-Q. In it,     they claim over fifteen million dollars in revenue from their SCOsource     initiative (mostly from Microsoft and Sun) with a decline in revenue     from all other sources. A lot of interesting statements are in the     10-Q, including "The success of our SCOsource licensing initiative, at     least initially, will depend to a great extent on the perceived     strength of our intellectual property and contractual claims and our     willingness to enforce our rights. Many, particularly those in the open     source community, dispute the allegations of infringement that we have     made"."

Worldwide State of Broadband - S Korea, Japan Lead http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/16/2356258

Geek of the Week writes "No surprise here, a report by the     International Telecommunications Union shows the US lagging in     broadband adoption. S Korea and Japan lead with between 60 and 70% of S     Korean households wired for speed, with Japan catching up quickly. The     U.S. ranks 11th. [0]Story here and the full press release can be found     on the [1]ITU website. Having traveled through Asia for business I     can't say I'm surprised, but it is disappointing that the availability     and price are in such sorry states here in the U.S." Links
