An anonymous reader points out this [0] report on News.com from Declan
McCullagh of a far-reaching plan (now withdrawn) to curtail much online
privacy through the use of biometric markers, excerpting "The idea
involved creating secure areas of the Internet that could be accessed
only if a user had such a marker, called eDNA, according to a report in
Friday's New York Times." Perhaps they'll withdraw the [1]plan to track
everything you buy next.
0. http://www.msnbc.com/news/838773.asp?0si=- Please Don't Ask Me About Windows On Christmas http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/23/2353217 Like many Slashdot users I spend a wee bit of my otherwise leisure time doing gratis tech support for people I may not even know. I usually don’t mind too much but last Christmas I got more than one call from distant relatives that, along with wanting to spread holiday cheer, had me weigh in on whatever might be wrong with their new gadget. I was pleased as punch to see [0]this article in the [1]NYT (F.R.Y.Y.Y) about where I might be able to send the less techo hip. If you do *Windows* tech support for grandma after hours this article might also come in handy." Here are a couple of [2]previous [3]articles about the sorry state of conventional support options -- perhaps articles like this will spark some entrepreneurial ideas, too. Links

Library Censorware Blocks Own Site
squiggleslash writes "The Daily Dayton News reports that a
demonstration of a new website for a library in Piqua, Ohio, [0]went
horribly wrong when the site was blocked by the library's own
censorware. Why? Because the library, founded by and named after
businessman Leo Flesh 70 years earlier, had the domain name
www.fleshpublic.lib.oh.us. And that key word, 'Flesh,' was a no-no as
far as Flesh Public Library's copy of Net Nanny was concerned." And for
an extra dose of tragicomic priority reversal, the library actually
decided to change its domain name rather than have Net Nanny fix the
erroneous blocking. I hope no one at the library wants to read about
the [1]fleshpots of Egypt.

Linux.com
Linux kept a low profile at Comdex this year. But maybe that's because Comdex itself is failing, and Microsoft is using what's left as a promotional vehicle.
Linux makes inroads against Windows PCs
Government agencies in Europe, China, India and South America have started to encourage Linux over proprietary software because it provides cost savings, freedom from reliance on a single software vendor, and flexibility. Server Makers Converge on Small and Medium Business Market http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=02/11/23/1435201 Competition among mid and large server suppliers are heating up in the small and medium business market as they roll out new products and gear up for sales in earnest. HP Korea released a new server tailored to SMBs in September, jumpstarting the competition, and its rivals such as IBM Korea, Sun Microsystems and LGIBM are all set to follow suite. MobiliX: Court says Mobilix too close to Obelix http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=02/11/23/1424224 Werner Heuser writes: Yesterday, the "Oberlandesgericht" (highest court of the Bavarian state) has affirmed that the brands "MobiliX" and "Obelix" can indeed be mixed up. The onomatopoetic similarities are big enough that a "normal user" could immediately be thinking of "Obelix" when hearing the word "MobiliX". Whether this a fact for IT people, too, though, was not answered by the court....
New Linux PDA for the Chinese market
Group Sense PDA Ltd. (GSPDA) has introduced a new Linux-based V-2002 PDA into the Chinese market. Like many recent PDA introductions, the V-2002 is based on an Intel StrongARM processor and provides a full-color 320 x 240 pixel LCD display.

Father of Java Sounds Off
James Gosling, the father of Java and a fellow at Sun Microsystems Inc., graced the Software Development Conference and Expo East 2002 with his presence this week, addressing a wide range of issues from Sun's software strategy to Web services to embedded Java to open-source software.
Open-Source Security Comes Under Fire
Thanks to several high-profile vulnerabilities and an overall increase in the number of flaws, open-source software has taken over Microsoft Corp.'s position at the bottom of the security heap. Oh my God!! No!! New security.debian.org server after fire in Twente http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=02/11/22/220239 The Debian Team has reinstalled security.debian.org on the host klecker, which is hosted at XS4all in the Netherlands. We apologize that it took about two days to resurrect this important service, but we are happy that it only cost two days. BroadQ releases Gold version of QCast Tuner with Linux support http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=02/11/22/2158216 Anonymous Reader writes "QCast Tuner turns a standard Sony PlayStation 2 with a Sony network adaptor into a true multimedia platform that can be simply connected to your PC (Window, MAC or Linux)and home network. Software costs $49.95 and is available online at www.broadq.com."
