Slashdot
An anonymous reader writes "Those who are fighting spam will tell you
that one of the most notorious spammers out there is Alan Ralsky. Well,
the Detroit Free Press has a very interesting [0]article on him. This
guy is about as unrepentant as they come, and he's saying he wants to
branch out into delivering pop-up spam via the Windows Messanging
service present on most Windows boxes. If you sysadmins out there have
been wavering about whether to block spam-friendly networks, read this
article, then go to [1]The Spamhaus Project and [2]SPEWS and start
getting IP ranges to block."

LANL Warning About Radioactive Trees

Alamos National Labs is warning personnel who are cutting trees in a
canyon east of Los Alamos that some trees in the area might be
radioactive. The canyon, known as Bayo Canyon, was formerly known as
Technical Area 10, and was used for weapons testing from the 1940s
until 1961. A [2]full summary of Environmental Direct Penetrating
Radation in the Los Alamos area is available from the [3]LANL

Only Thieves Block Pop-Ups
aurelian writes "It's official: using browsing the web while blocking pop-up ads and other such exciting website enhancements is theft. Anti-leech.com are offering to protect your site from browsers blocking pop-ups (or 'theft tools' as they call them) - just [0]try stealing from them with your favourite pop-up free browser. (I picked this up on the [1]phoenix discussion forum...)" Links 0. http://www.anti-leech.com/theft_example.html
Do People Really Use Their PDAs?
TAL asks: "With Dell entering the market with their new PDA, the PDA market appears saturated. I work in a high-tech industry and I see more people carrying their PDAs than actually using them. At the same time, I see many people actually going back to their paper planners. I've ran the PDA gauntlet myself and have found that much time is wasted syncing, charging and reinstalling the software. Have there been any studies on PDA turnover? I think the PDA has become more of a status symbol than a useful tool." RIAA, MPAA Instigate U.S. Naval Academy Raid http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/24/2010223
LaikaVirgin writes "After receiving [0]a letter from 'four
entertainment-based lobbying associations', the [1]U.S. Naval Academy
has [2]seized nearly 100 midshipmen's computers that allegedly had
pirated media. It's good to see that the armed forces know who's really
in charge."

Corel Linux has been reinvented as Xandros, a user-friendly flavor of the operating system. I've seen Xandros in action, and while it doesn't signal the end of the road for other desktop OSs, I see it as the on-ramp of a superhighway.
An Overview of the Boa Web Server
Anonymous Reader writes "There is a new lite web server in town, named Boa. The server can run very fast on older machines, even on embedded devices, but it is only CGI-based. OSNews introduces Boa (running under Linux) and it includes benchmarks against Apache and thttpd."
Sharp unveils clamshell Linux PDA
Sharp has introduced a model of its Zaurus handheld computer, sporting a VGA-resolution display, QWERTY keyboard that can be folded away behind the device, and a screen that displays in both portrait and landscape modes. TWTW: QtScape, OS/2, T'soblivion, Security threat http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=02/11/24/1619240 Anonymous Reader writes "In its rundown of the week's events, Linux and Main looks at some items you might have missed: Is QtScape to survive? Gerstner book shows IBM lied about OS/2. KMail's addressbook doesn't like Theodore T'so, for some reason. Is a major internet attack due Friday?"

A Losing Bet: the Last Days of Comdex, Part 1 http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=02/11/24/1211212 Linux kept a low profile at Comdex this year. But maybe that's because Comdex itself is failing, and Microsoft is using what's left as a promotional vehicle.
