Slashdot
An anonymous reader writes "[0]This story offers some interesting performance comparisons between the latest stable Linux kernels (2.4.x) and the latest development Linux kernels (2.5.x), comparing performance on both a single processor and dual processors. These numbers help validate that the upcoming 2.6 kernel will outperform the current 2.4 kernel, at least in some instances..." Links 0. http://kerneltrap.org/node.php?id=514
239 MPG Car
Kozmik writes "VW/Audi has a history of being a leader in creating super fuel efficient vehicles. They currently sell the most fuel efficient car in the world, 3L [0] Lupo and the [1]Audi A2, and the most fuel efficient station wagon ([2]Jetta TDI Wagon). Now VW is experimenting with something along the lines of the Honda Insight ( a 2 person vehicle ). The [3]1L VW concept car can achieve .89L/100kms or 239MPG. With [4] Biodiesel and [5]Ultra low sulfur diesel becoming available, hopefully more of these vehicles will come to North America. These fuels are already available in Europe and combined with the new catalyst technology they use, these new engines produce very low emissions." It's nice to talk about alternative fuels, but I have yet to see a gas station selling one of them. Links

Investigating Chronic Wasting Disease
windows writes "[0]The Saint Louis Post-Dispatch has an article in
today's newspaper on [1]efforts by many states to test for chronic
wasting disease. The disease affects deer and elk, and is similar to
Mad Cow Disease in how it destroys brain tissue giving it a spony
appearance under a microscope. Due to the rapid spread of the disease
recently, most states are enlisting the assistance of hunters to
provide brain stems of deer, to test for the disease. The purpose of
this study is just to determine how far geographically the disease has
spread. It is not yet understood how the disease is spread or if it is
a threat to cattle or humans."

Ground work laid for Open Source Java
Java Community Process (JCP) members have voted to alter the community's structure, officially supporting open source implementations of Java. Open Source advocacy group set up in Victoria http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=02/12/02/1031218 Open Source Victoria will aim to educate the State's business and government leaders about the benefits of using Open Source software for both server and desktop environments, Con Zymaris, one of the main people behind the group, said today. Human rights enshrined in open source software http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=02/12/02/1029233 Software distributed under an "enhanced source" licence released this week will be legally prohibited from censoring or spying on users.

Statistics about Linux and related topics from around the world. GNU Bayonne extends support for synthesized voices http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=02/11/30/199244 David Sugar writes: (November 30th, Bayonne, NJ) With the latest GNU Bayonne beta release (1.1.2), we have greatly expanded support for and integration of automated text to speech synthesized voice systems. Using "flite" based text to speech synthesis engines, initially developed through Carnegie Mellon University, and commercial derivatives of "flite", such as Cepstral's Theta, it is now possible to have fully automated high quality voice ...
Window Managers (introduction)
In recent times, the desktop Linux world has been enriched beyond recognition by the KDE and GNOME projects, but window managers are still at the heart of these environments, as well being used widely on their own. In this review, I'll delve into this exciting world and look at the development and the state of the art of some of the most significant and most popular window managers.
Finally, Linux With a Lot Less Fuss
Over the past few weeks, I've installed Linux on three computers without breaking into fits of cursing. That's a novel development in my experience with this open-source operating system.
Linux future scales out
AS DOMINANT SYSTEMS and software companies continue to pour millions into scaling Linux for the enterprise, some observers now believe the open-source OS's future is to serve as a distributed, network-based operating system.
