Linux Kernel Performance How Will 2.6 Measure Up? http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/02/0125259

An anonymous reader writes "[0]This story offers some interesting     performance comparisons between the latest stable Linux kernels (2.4.x)     and the latest development Linux kernels (2.5.x), comparing performance     on both a single processor and dual processors. These numbers help     validate that the upcoming 2.6 kernel will outperform the current 2.4     kernel, at least in some instances..." Links

239 MPG Car
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/02/0326234

Kozmik writes "VW/Audi has a history of being a leader in creating     super fuel efficient vehicles. They currently sell the most fuel     efficient car in the world, 3L [0] Lupo and the [1]Audi A2, and the     most fuel efficient station wagon ([2]Jetta TDI Wagon). Now VW is     experimenting with something along the lines of the Honda Insight ( a 2     person vehicle ). The [3]1L VW concept car can achieve .89L/100kms or     239MPG. With [4] Biodiesel and [5]Ultra low sulfur diesel becoming     available, hopefully more of these vehicles will come to North America.     These fuels are already available in Europe and combined with the new     catalyst technology they use, these new engines produce very low     emissions." It's nice to talk about alternative fuels, but I have yet     to see a gas station selling one of them. Links

What Makes Great Science Fiction?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/02/0324226

[0]cheesethegreat writes "Have you ever noticed how everyone breaks
down into a near-religious frenzy when the topic of the "best" science     fiction universe comes up? Everyone has a favorite universe, be it the     Foundation Series by Asimov, or the classic Star Wars trilogy. So tell     Slashdot what your favorite is, and what the most important part of a     science fiction universe is to you." Links

Review: Solaris
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/01/2147200

[0]Solaris was one of several movies to hit the theaters this
Thanksgiving weekend, and it won't be the most successful. The [1]1961     sci-fi novel has also been the source material for a [2]1972 film.     There are numerous reviews - far more for Solaris than Die Another Day,     suggesting that the critics were hopeful ([3]Salon, [4]NY Times), or     maybe just tired of Bond, James Bond. I saw DAD as well this weekend,     and my capsule review is simple: it sucked, the Bond franchise has     definitely jumped the shark (two words: invisible car). But Solaris is     worth a few more words.

Investigating Chronic Wasting Disease
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/01/181228

windows writes "[0]The Saint Louis Post-Dispatch has an article in     today's newspaper on [1]efforts by many states to test for chronic     wasting disease. The disease affects deer and elk, and is similar to     Mad Cow Disease in how it destroys brain tissue giving it a spony     appearance under a microscope. Due to the rapid spread of the disease     recently, most states are enlisting the assistance of hunters to     provide brain stems of deer, to test for the disease. The purpose of     this study is just to determine how far geographically the disease has     spread. It is not yet understood how the disease is spread or if it is     a threat to cattle or humans."

New License Forbids Human Rights Violations? http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/01/1755227

[0]KjetilK writes "A new [1]license published by [2]Hacktivismo, builds
on Free Software licenses but adds clauses to "promote fundamental     human rights of end-users". For those deeply involved in politics, this     is a good idea, but Free Software Licenses have traditionally placed no     restrictions on use." There's a [3]news article about this as well. Links

  • By David 'cdlu' Graham - Managing an open source or free software related project can be challenging, so why do it alone? This essay explains how the Open and Free Technology Community's pseudo-democratic system works to divide up power and authority and always keep fresh blood working on the project.
