Mechanical Butterflies?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/13/0423230

MImeKillEr writes "According to an [0]article on BBC News, two     researchers from Oxford took highspeed photographs of an Admiral     butterfly in a specially-designed windtunnel to study how butterflies     fly. The resulting research brings insight into small-scale flight     dynamics. Although the article doesn't give an ETA on this, they expect     to be able to build an aircraft with a 10cm wingspan that will be     either autonomous or radio controlled. This will allow them to be used     in rescue missions, cave exploration and possibly even on Mars." Links

hether writes "Customers of the auction site [0]eBay have been targeted     by a site called [1]ebayupdates.com. The site attempts to steal credit     card details from eBay's 55 million customers. The [2]SANS Institute     Internet Storm Center issued the warning on this one. Info about the     scam can be found on the [3]BBC site, [4]CNN, [5]CNet, [6]vnunet, and
[7]more. Funny enough there's no mention of this on the eBay site..."

Sun Security Patch Introduces Security Hole http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/13/0335254

Rich0 writes "Sun is [0]announcing that their 'Security Hardening     Package' for their Cobalt RaQ 4 Linux servers allows remote users to     execute arbitrary code. Ironically, the solution is to remove the     package, potentially removing protection from other compromises.     There's a [1]CERT advisory, as well as [2]an article posted on
[3]Extremetech." Yikes, one would hope there's a forthcoming patch in
    the works.

Tivo 2 Features On the Horizon
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/12/2319241

[0]Lemuel writes "Tivo has finally [1]pre-announced its music and photo
pictures for the Tivo 2. Users will be able to play MP3s and view     photos that come from their computer. It will also be possible to     program the Tivo via a web site. An official announcement is due in     January. There will be revenue associated with these items. Only the     remote programming sounds interesting to me, but I'm glad for anything     that would keep Tivo afloat."

http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/12/234243

According to [0]this press release,     LucasArts has teamed up with [1]LFNetwork to open [2]LucasFiles.com.     The site is dedicated to all files that fall in the LucasArts realm."     Given competing games like [3]Neverwinter Nights, which have a     phenomenal amount of user-created add-ons, this is a very smart move     for LucasArts.

MS Proposes Disclosing Windows Source To India http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/12/2046255

[0]raghuram writes "Interesting news from [1]Economic Times of India, I
found an interesting story, [2] Microsoft Planning to Share Code with     India." He excerpts from that article: "Microsoft has already made a     proposal to the ministry of information technology (of India) for     sharing the Windows source code with one government body. The nature of     the body has not been spelt out; it will presumably be worked out after     discussions between the company and the government officials.     Interestingly, the offer comes at a time when state governments are     showing interest in rival Linux operating system as the latter's source     code is free and downloadable from the internet." Update On The Jon Johansen Trial
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/12/2117232

[0]nordicfrost writes "The trial against Jon Johansen goes on. Today,
John Hoy of the DVD CCA was [1]examined by phone by the defense and the     prosecutor in Oslo. We have set up a page to follow the main events in     the trial [2] here, in English. The documentation of evidence, and the     fact that Hoy didn't answer the phone when the court called, delayed     the trial so the final proceedings may not be finished before Monday     afternoon." Update: 12/12 23:50 GMT by [3]T: This wasn't really a     Science story ...

Making a home terminal/server network with LTSP http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=02/12/05/1644243

  • By William G. Canaday - When my wife asked me to remove Windows and install Linux on her computer, I was happy to oblige. She is familiar with Linux from watching me use it and was quite upset that Windows had lost her desktop photograph -- again. This gave me an excuse to try setting up a terminal / server network. Since we each had beefy desktop machines, this also gave me an opportunity to turn her machine to another use. After resurrecting ...
