NWN Linux Client Delayed
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/14/0113249

An anonymous reader writes "Posted tonight on the [0]Neverwinter Nights     Linux client page: '[Dec 13 2002] There have been many questions as to     why the Linux client is taking so long. The two big issues are sound     and movies due to the fact that BINK and Miles are only available for     Windows and Mac. BINK is the in-game movie player and Miles is the     sound engine for Neverwinter Nights. We are having to find our own     solution for Linux sound in Neverwinter Nights, and we are exploring     possible movie options. Due to these factors, we are revising the     estimated release date from Fall 2002 to Winter 2002 (Dec 22 2002 to     March 21 2003), with January 2003 being the earliest date it could be     out. Progress has been made on sound this week, and to re-iterate, the     graphical side of the Linux client is looking excellent and is almost     complete.'"

Star Wars Galaxies Only to Allow One Character Per Account http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/14/007205

frotty writes "The developers of [0]Star Wars Galaxies recently     announced that the game would only allow a single character per     purchased account on any server. This has outraged some, and relieved     others." Click on the link to see the reasoning behind this move. Links

Mandrake News
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/13/2038221

Do you need help?X

DCowern writes "Mandrake yesterday released their FY2001-2002 earnings     and I'm glad to say it's looking real good for them. They've cut     operating costs by 42% and increased revenues by 31%. They're still not     quite in the black yet but they're expecting to break even     month-to-month beginning in February. The full report is [0]here. In     other news, Mandrake announced two new programs yesterday. The first is
[1]Multi Network Firewall, which looks like an extremely nice package
for running small to medium-sized networks. The second program, and my     favorite, is their "[2]OS refugee" offer." Links

30 Years Since Last Man on the Moon
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/05/0323225

[0]Honeydipper Dan writes "December 14 marks the 30th anniversary of
the [1]last man on the Moon . I haven't noticed any hoopla about this.     Perhaps this event raises the subtext of why we haven't been back a     little more than the first Moon landing's 30th anniversary did over 3     years ago. The Apollo 17 mission was a great success, however, and     deserves to be remembered. It marked the first (and last) time a     geologist was on the surface of the Moon. Meanwhile, [2]NASA is     commemorating the Wright brothers' flight of December 17, 1903, getting     ready for next year's [3]Centennial of Flight." Links

SBC-Yahoo Partnership Cuts User Privacy
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/13/2021211

simeonbeta2 writes "The San Francisco Chronicle is running a [0]story     about Pac Bell's dsl partnership with Yahoo. Initially touted as a new     service, Pac Bell is apparently now mailing existing dsl customers to     urge them to install additional client software that will enable     'incredible new features and services'. While SBC's [1]privacy policy     is not excessively intrusive, use of the new software is covered by     Yahoo's [2]privacy policy, which is just a bit more Orwellian." The     story's a little overblown - Yahoo's privacy policy reads that way     because they offer financial services and the like, where they may well     need financial information from you to provide the service. The     reporter needed to investigate this new software DSL users are being     asked to install, and find out what sort of user tracking it enables. Links

Human-Computer Interfaces From 2003 to 2012 http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/13/1827200

[0]Roland Piquepaille writes "My favorite forecaster, Gartner, is back
with a new [1]series of predictions about the way we'll interact with     our computing devices. Here is the introduction. 'Human-computer     interfaces will rapidly improve during the next decade. The wide     availability of cheaper display technologies will be one of the most     transformational events in the IT industry.' Not exactly a scoop,     isn't? But wait, here is a real prediction. 'Computer screens will     become ubiquitous in the everyday environment.' Ready for another     prediction? 'Through 2012, more than 95 percent (by volume in     gigabytes) of human-to-computer information input will remain keyboardand      mouse-based.' Check [2]this column for a summary." Links

Making a home terminal/server network with LTSP http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=02/12/05/1644243

  • By William G. Canaday - When my wife asked me to remove Windows and install Linux on her computer, I was happy to oblige. She is familiar with Linux from watching me use it and was quite upset that Windows had lost her desktop photograph -- again. This gave me an excuse to try setting up a terminal / server network. Since we each had beefy desktop machines, this also gave me an opportunity to turn her machine to another use. After resurrecting ...
