An anonymous reader writes "There's a story on the Boston Globe's     Digital MASS section about Mitch Kapor , the guy who created Lotus     1-2-3. He will reportedly spend about $5 mil to create something     competing with MS Outlook. [0]More of the story here." We [1]mentioned     this a few months ago as well, and it sounds like any software release     is still some time off.

Full-Text Audio Search
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/22/1940214

[0]Captain Chad writes "The latest print edition (12/16/2002) of
[1]InfoWorld has an interesting article about an audio search program
by [2]Fast-Talk Communications. (The article is not yet available on     the InfoWorld web site, but the Fast-Talk site has some good info,     including a downloadable trial version.) The product works by breaking     the audio stream into [3]phonemes, which are the 'basic units of sound     in a language.' The search is then performed for a specific sequence of     phonemes. This method is faster and far superior to traditional audio     searches which convert to text and then perform a normal text search.     The author of the Infoworld article, Jon Udell, tried a variety of     searches that were surpisingly successful. If this technology is as     good as he claims, there is a reasonable chance it will revolutionize     the way we store data. Maybe there will even be an 'Audio' tab on     Google." Dunno about you guys, but I get a couple of those a     day...and I've resisted the 'temptation.'" Computer Attack and Defense As Spectator Sport http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/22/1841259

zanbar writes "There was a Slashdot story in March about the [0]Alamo     Drafthouse in Austin -- using WiFi in a theater. On Jan 11th, an event     at the Alamo will combine video with wireless. [1]LinuxTopGun.org gives     details about a series of computer network attack competitions going on     tour through North America. They bring in a Linux/Apache web server, a     bunch of teams bring in their laptops and attack it over a wireless     network. Teams take turns onstage defending the server and then     answering audience Q&A about their strategies. MCs interview     competitors and explain network attacks to the audience. DJs mix and     VJs flip live video with network visualization software -- animations     like in the movie 'Hackers.' Judges award points for how well     competitors perform, both online and onstage, and the top teams win     prizes... It's like watching computer attacks as a live sport. There is     also some discussion taking place in #ltg on efnet." Links

Commentary: Teaching Newbies GNU/Linux

  • By Tom Chance - In a recent ask Slashdot thread, chrisd asked Slashdot readers how they thought he should present Free Software (FS) on TV, i.e. how one should present FS to "newbies." As is typical of a Slashdot commentators' debate, there was little agreement on the approach that should be taken, with lots of interesting arguments, counter-arguments, and comments coming in from entirely different angles (indeed that is the real value of a ...
