Bridging Unix and Windows At NASA
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/24/006238

[0]slashdotess writes "[1]Information Week reports: "About a year ago,
Patrick McCartney, a Johnson Center project manager, created a Linux     desktop environment that could also run government-mandated Microsoft     apps. This let his team of 30 engineers continue to program in a     Unixlike environment and create Word documents and Outlook E-mail all     on the same PC. This mixed-use scenario is slowly taking hold,     encouraged by a growing number of applications for running Linux on PC     desktops." Score another one for Linux on the Desktop." Links

New Jersey Enacts 'Smart Gun' Law
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/24/0124218

[0]rmohr02 writes "New Jersey has [1]just enacted legislation that
would require all handguns to be able to recognize their owners and     only fire when their owners grip them. Gun manufacturers will be     required to implement this within three years of the NJ Attorney     General's approval of an acceptable, commercially available model. One     critic says 'No technology is foolproof--anyone who has a computer     knows how many times it crashes.' I'm sure fellow /.ers will have     something to say about that. Satellite Imagery Used to Trace Lewis & Clark Route http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/24/0052258

Woogiemonger writes "To commemorate the 200 year anniversary of the     Lewis & Clark expedition, NASA and other researchers are using     satellite and aircraft remote-sensing technology to accurately
[0]reconstruct the path of the Lewis & Clark expedition, down to the
precise location of each encampment. Considering many parts of the     landscape along the path may have changed dramatically, this is no easy     task. The final result will be a 3D interactive map publicly available     on the WWW."

China Forges Ahead With 'Dragon' CPU
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/24/0040257

[0]Dynamic Drive writes "There's an interesting article on Cnet
regarding China's eager attempts to lessen her dependence on foreign     technology when it comes to CPUs. The latest endeavor is a [1]homegrown     chip named 'Dragon', which apparently is roughly equivalent in speeds     to those of Intel chips made between 1995-1997, or 200-260MHz. While I     think such an audacious effort is most certainly commendable, I can't     help but wonder what the potential things that could go wrong with     designing a CPU are, such as software incompatibilities etc." This is     the [2]same processor mentioned in September, only now more than 10,000     of the chips have been made.

[0]MarkRH writes "I know, it looked like a troll to me too. But
apparently a Pentagon-funded group, the Highlands Forum, is
[1]investigating the possibility of fighting terrorism by postulating
that terrorist networks are similar to the online communities found in     MMORPGs. By studying interaction within a community like Everquest, the     military hopes to find hints on how to crack Al Qaeda." See also the

  • By Robin 'Roblimo' Miller - On December 15 and 16, 2002, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan held an Open Source Software Workshop, sponsored in part by the U.S. Agency for International Development. I was one of the speakers. Two gentlemen from Microsoft also spoke. I was in favor of Linux and Open Source. They weren't.
