DSL Amidst Phone Wars
DrewCapu writes "The [0]SF Chronicle has an [1]article which talks about the battles between SBC and AT&T & MCI over supposed unfair practices concerning DSL and switching phone companies. All sides have their own spin on it. Can't we all just get along? Things have been heating up ever since [2]SBC got closer to offering LD in CA." Links

OpenGL Widget Set Recommendations?
rrwood asks: "I'm starting work on what is more or less an open-source 3D modeling application, and I'd like to make it as cross-platform as possible (Linux, FreeBSD, Windows, MacOS, etc.). OpenGL takes care of the 3D rendering I'm going to need, but I also need some sort of widget set, and I'm looking for advice as to what to use in that regard. I've done my Google homework and have come up with the following, but would like feedback from anyone who has already used any of these, or has recommendations about anything I may have missed. Yes, I know about Blender, and be reassured I am not planning on reinventing that wheel, okay? :-) So, here's what I've found so far. As I said, if anyone can add to this list or share his/her experiences actually working with any of these, that would be greatly appreciated." Many Tools of Big Brother Are Up and Running http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/24/179230
wildfrontiersman writes "NY Times article, [0]Many Tools of Big Brother
Are Up and Running, quote: 'Because of the inroads the Internet and
other digital network technologies have made into everyday life over
the last decade, it is increasingly possible to amass Big Brother-like
surveillance powers through Little Brother means. The basic components
include everyday digital technologies like e-mail, online shopping and
travel booking, A.T.M. systems, cellphone networks, electronic
toll-collection systems and credit-card payment terminals.' This is too
scary. I am now ready for a little less convenience and a little more
privacy. How about you?"

Using Your iPod Under Linux
Jon writes "I've just put up an article on LinuxLookup.com on how I got my iPod working under Linux. I've given a little overview on the different options available, and which one worked best for my needs. All in all, I'm extremely happy with the outcome. I can transfer my music, create playlists, and add all of my contacts. The only thing missing is a nice GUI."
Microsoft to Appeal Java Ruling
Microsoft Corp. plans to appeal a federal court ruling requiring it to include its rival's updated Java programming language in its Windows operating system. Sun Microsystems Shares Gain After Microsoft Is Ordered to Include Java http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=02/12/24/209206 Sun Microsystems Inc. shares rose 5.7 percent after a judge ordered Microsoft Corp. to include Sun's Java Internet software in the Windows computer operating system.
Python and DB2 for Linux
Anonymous Reader writes "Python is a great tool to use with DB2 Version 8. It combines the ability to quickly and simply access a DB2 database with the power to perform more complex tasks that require a general-purpose programming language. You'll learn about the Python DB2 module using the sample that ships with DB2 Version 8.1. By the end of the tutorial you will have received a thorough introduction to the entire Python DB2 interface." (Free ...
Dvorak misses the mark
Voodoo Press writes "I recently read John C. Dvorak's column,"Microsoft, Innovation, and Linux" hoping that the article would be an interesting take on the subject matter presented as the title. I was disappointed by what I found. The article is a great deal less than any real examination of fact as it is a declaration that Microsoft will remain dominant because of its features."

Linux studies have major flaws
Recent IDC and Aberdeen Group studies on Linux are either being taken out of context or are seriously messed up.
Finding an opening
Open-source databases, including MySQL and PostgreSQL, are marching into the enterprise via their inclusion in major Linux distributions, which are quickly growing in usage on middle-tier servers and back-end clusters.
Old folks pick up Open Source
Senior citizens from a community group in SS3 here have greatly impressed their trainer Colin Charles by quickly learning how to install and configure the Linux Red Hat 8.0 operating system.
