11 Digit Dialing Comes Home to New York
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/01/21/1324203

[0]Traicovn writes "The [1]NY Times (free registration, yadda yadda) is
carrying an [2]article about 11 digit dialing coming to the city of New     York for all phone calls, including inner city calls. Yes, that means     even to dial across the street you will have to dial 1-xxx-xxx-xxxx.     Eventually as the phone number system fills up because of more people     having cellphones/pager/fax and a home/office phone line we may see     this happening in more cities across the nation or the [3]NANPA may     have to intervene by making phone numbers longer in general." South African Gov't Declared An Open Source Zone http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/01/20/2018243

fungai writes "The Business Day [0]reports that the South African     government has decided to adopt open source software and develop     support programs with local research institutes and universities. Bad News From Canada On NetTV And Media Levies http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/01/21/0059216

twilight30 writes "[0]Canadian regulators ruled Friday that it is     illegal to put broadcast TV signals onto the Internet without     permission, dashing the hopes of entrepreneurs hoping to create new Net     TV businesses. An alternate link to the original at CNet is [1]here."     And [2]Dr Caleb writes "In response to this [3] Slashdot story I     emailed my Member of Parlament. He responded to me today to say that     "Despite strong opposition by the Canadian Alliance to these and other     aspects of the bill, the Minister of Canadian Heritage won the day and     Bill C-32 Copyright Legislation is now law." And further to say "The     law assumes guilt that everyone who buys a blank tape or CD is pirating     music - but anyone who uses CDs for data storage, for instance, knows     that's not true!" Distressing that the bill has passed, but refreshing     that my MP 'gets it'!"

[0]bhsurfer writes "The city of San Francisco has [1]banned the Segway
[CNN.com] from it's sidewalks before they've even arrived. Apparently
Santa Cruz, Oakland and San Mateo are considering a ban as well. What a     bunch of spoilsports...or are they? Any thoughts on this?" According to     the article, hiring high-powered lobbyists may have backfired. but the     city claims safety concerns are behind the decision. Links

Publication Bans In A Borderless World
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/01/20/2147238

slantyyz writes "Wired has a story on a [0]publication ban imposed by a     Canadian court on the Canadian media in a well-publicized serial murder     case. Now this ban doesn't apply to foreign media per se, but given the     borderless nature of the Internet, it leads one to wonder about the     efficacy of such a ban. Canadians clearly have access to the American     media channels online. The last major publication ban occurred in the     early nineties with another Canadian serial murder case involving
[1]Paul Bernardo. It was effective to the point that the Internet was
still a young medium, but even then, there were a few newsgroups     created that were dedicated to spreading rumours about the ongoing     trial."

Judge Decides X-Men Aren't Human
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/01/20/1950246

An anonymous reader points to this [0]Wall Street Journal article,     writing "According to the U.S. Court of International Trade, the X-Men     (along with other figures from the Marvel universe) aren't human. The     presiding judge subjected the figures to "comprehensive examinations"     which included "the need to remove the clothes of the figure."     Ironically, the X-Men, whose struggle for human acceptance has been a     key theme in the series, were more easily classified as non-human than     Kraven and Mole Man.
