Advice You Would Give to Your 12 Year-Old Self? http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/02/21/0859220

[0]urbazewski asks: "If you could send a message back to your [1]nerdy
unpopular 12 year old self, what would you say? I've been asking this     one for several years, and the replies sound suspiciously like the lame     advice I got from adults at that age ('just be yourself, dear'). The     most creative answer was from an American-born Buddhist monk, who     didn't think his 12 year old self would listen to a message along the     lines of 'Hey, what you're doing is kind of making things suck for me     right now' --- he would send a message to himself by adding extra     lyrics to a song he really liked when he was in junior high school. I     got the best replies from a large class at UC Santa Cruz. The modal     answer was 'Buy Microsoft.' About 7% of the class said 'Enjoy yourself     in high school because college is really hard.' Another 7% said "Study     harder in high school because college is really hard.' (The best     variant on that theme: 'Try to figure out what "studying" is'). In the     hindsight-is-20/20 dept. there was a girl who said 'Do not date the     following people...' and then listed six names and a guy who said 'You     know how you're thinking about trying to drive your dad's car? Don't!.'     My personal favorite: 'You're a dork now, but don't worry, you'll be     cool when you're in college.'"

LGP Announces Game Development Project
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/02/21/177229

[0]michaelsimms writes "[1]Linux Game Publishing is excited to announce
our newest project to increase the appeal of Linux gaming. We are     sponsoring the development of a from-scratch Linux title! We are     looking for developers to work in a team to produce this game, and we     will be publishing the game they make! If you are interested, please     follow the link to [2]Our detailed announcement and within there you     will find the rules, requirements, and application process. If you have     wanted to get into the gaming industry, if you love playing games, and     if you are a creative thinker, not afraid of a challenge and a bit of     risk, then you need to take a look." I don't know whether to be happy     about anything that promotes Linux gaming, or disappointed that people     are being asked to work on a commercial project without a salary. Links

Linux in the Enterprise at LWE 2003
http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/02/21/1654225

To say that the weather was cold at this year's LinuxWorld Expo at New     York's Jacob K. Javits Center can hardly do justice to the feeling of     walking across 34^th Street. The cold cut like a knife; of course it     was impossible to get a cab going to the center due to NYC's unending     traffic problems and cabbies' general avoidance of destinations near     the river with few return-fare possibilities. Among the throngs of     fellow native New Yorkers, ...

Will the real chip standard please stand up? http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/02/21/1531204

I think that everyone in Intel's public relations department deserves a     $1 million bonus. That's because Intel has scored a PR coup of     humongous proportions. Not only does Intel have vendors like Dell     describing its proprietary processors and chipsets as industry     standards (as in, "our systems are built on industry standard parts"),     but now the media is beginning to validate that undeserved     characterization.
