Jupiter's "Mini-Me" Solar System Grows
An anonymous reader writes "University of Hawaii's robotic telescopes
have [0]discovered 8 new moons for Jupiter, thus bringing its mini
solar system to 48 total. No one knows how Jupiter dissipates the
energy of these likely asteroid captures, unless it once had a
massively larger atmosphere. Indeed, its [1]ion cloud today seems to
spell doom for what Sir Arthur C. Clarke indicated, is another reason
to avoid probing life on Europa. ('All these worlds are yours--except
Europa. Attempt no landings there.'-- 2010: Odyssey Two). As an aside,

http://www.astrobio.net/audio/392.mp3Bad Behavior on the 'Net - Who Pays the Bandwidth Bill? http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/06/204235 rakolam asks: "I am involved with network management in the hosting department of a fairly large ISP. Constantly we have customers who dispute inbound bandwidth spikes and demand service credits on their burstable connections. Events such as the Slammer Virus literally have everyone knocking on their salesperson's door at the end of the billing cycle. My position is that the internet is a public space, and by placing themselves in that space, one has to realize the consequences (and the implications of burstable billing). I'd like Slashdot's perspective on this. Should ISP's ultimately eat the costs of malicious behavior? Is the customer ultimately responsible for the bandwidth they've generated, regardless if it's desired or not? Is this a new frontier for insurance companies?"
Cornell Implementing Bandwidth Charges
Sabalon writes "[0]Cornell University is planning on implementing a
plan where if faculty, staff or students use more than 2GB of bandwidth
a month, they will be [1]charged for the additional bandwidth usage.
The article mentions that last year over 100,000GB worth of files were
sent from Cornell's network. I'm sure this is not the only school doing
this or moving to this. I'm sure the conspiracy theory people will see
this as a suggestion by Microsoft to stop students from getting those
pesky Linux iso images. At least, according to the RIAA, CD sales
around Cornell should now skyrocket :)" It'll be interesting to see how
this plays out. Since students often have accounts on several different
university machines, I suspect the more rebellious ones will be running
an assortment of proxies and redirections to get around the
restrictions.
CIPA Before The Supreme Court
Jim Tyre pointed out the excellent [0]collection of links on
censorware.net to coverage of yesterday's oral arguments before the
U.S. Supreme Court about the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA),
as [1]promised by this story last month. There's also a link to the
place where transcripts of the oral arguments will show up about three
weeks from now.

New 'net transfers speed record
Does 923 megabits per second sound tasty? That's the average rate of a data transfer that was achieved between Sunnyvale, CA and Amsterdam, NL.
RHN Support: A worthy service
Voodoo Press writes "I have read Jon Lettice's article detailing how getting Red Hat network support for free has become "harder". John has some points to make, but I do think there is a valid reason for what Red Hat is doing. It has nothing to do with "squeezing" the little guy as far as I can see."
ScratchAmp Drive Source Code Released
Rick van Lieshout writes "The people at N2IT and Stanton Magnetics decided to release the source code of the Linux ScratchAmp driver being used in their product called 'FinalScratch'."
AMD: Too Smart for Its Own Good?
It's banking on Clawhammer, the first 64-bit chip for desktops, but analysts fear the revolutionary processor may be ahead of its time.
Is ANY Certification Worth Pursuing?
In the midst of a series of articles on Sun certification, it has become imperative to take a short break and address the question I am most commonly asked -- Is it worth getting certified?
Linux options still boxed in
For some, there is a driving urge to live without Windows, a digital-age-old quest to shed the Microsoft coil worn by most who have ever used a computer.
Alternative Licensing for Music
The recording industry has always tried to control innovation of technology to meet their interests, and make maximum profits. This has worked in the past, with traditional distribution, such as radio, record stores, and the like. The industry has always wanted you to buy what they are promoting. They have done this by limiting the selection in stores, and using payola to indie promoters to get the radio to include their promotions in your ...
School Laboratory Management Blues
One of the main challenges in running a school computer laboratory is managing the software running on the different PCs allocated for use by students. System administrators face various scenarios, all stemming from the nature of a learning environment in which users all have superuser access to their machines.
