Defining "Planet"
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/09/2249257

[0]beardoc writes "[1]The Sydney Morning Herald is running a [2]story
today about a controversial proposal to define what size a planet might     be - depending on what the final definition of how big a planet is, we     could end up losing Pluto (at 2300 kilometres) to the status of     "asteroid" or gaining three more planets - Quaoar, Varuna and Ceres." Links

New Zealand Looks at Internet Censorship http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/09/199243

David writes "The New Zealand Government 'Select Committee', upon     reviewing censorship law, has issued a [0]report which among other     things, recommends that ISPs face [1]compulsory licensing "in order to     control their behaviour", the [2]forcing of a code of conduct upon     ISPs, and recommends the implementation of an internet filtration     programme not dissimilar from that of [3]Australia's (although it is     hazy on the details of what this would mean). They're starting to     become really worried about the [4]dangers of the internet." Links

It will be held in Boca Raton, FL June 16-18. YAPC is a low-cost     ($85USD) conference, but still has high quality speakers and topics.     Although submissions for talks is still going on (ends March 15), many     terrific ones are already in the queue. [1]Register today!" Links

Kernel 2.2 - It Lives!
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/09/1915203

Build6 writes "For those of us still using 2.2 (how's that for     "conservatism" eh?) -- 2.2.24 is out (and has been since last week) -     see [0]kernel.org for downloads. I see networking code tweaks, but no     changelog. Time to give our old RH 6.2 machines one last     kernel-recompile before Red Hat's end-of-life date arrives for 6.2? :-)     What I'd like to know is - who else (besides me) out there still has     machines running 2.2 and intends to keep it that way?" Geek Roadtrips Through the Heartland
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/09/2144210

While researching a roadtrip which I'll be taking from St. Paul,     Minnesota to Placerville, Ca I did what any geek would do, I checked     out the [0]t-mobile hotspots along the route (some), did various     searching on [1]wi-finder (some) and other sites and have been doing     some googling around on the topic. I know that there must be some     802.11b access points along and inside the towns along I-80, but for     the life of me I'm finding it difficult for me to find any of them. I     of course have various wireless sniffing apps, but that is hardly an     efficient way to find access. I don't mind paying a small fee,     so....with that in mind, if you were to take a trip across the country,     where would you stop for access? For specifics, Read More... Links

Serial SCSI Standard Coming Soon
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/09/190212

rchatterjee writes "SCSI is very close to joining ATA in leaving a     parallel interface design behind in favor of serial one. [0]Serial     attached SCSI, as the standard will be known, is expected to be     ratified sometime in the second quarter of this year according to this
[1]article at Computerworld. Hard drive manufacturers [2]Seagate and
[3]Maxtor have already said that they will have drives conforming to
the new standard shipping by the end of the year. The new standard will     shatter the current SCSI throughput limit of 320 megabit/sec with a     starting maximum throughput of 3 gigabit/sec. But before this thread     turns into a SCSI fanboy vs. ATA fanboy flame war this other [4]article     states that Serial Attached SCSI will be compatible with SATA drives so     you can have the best of both worlds." Salvaging Defective DRAM
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/09/046206

An anonymous reader writes "Ever wonder [0]what happens to DRAM that     fails quality assurance testing during manufacturing? Turns out a lot     of it ends up as 'downgrade' memory and ends up in OEM memory modules.     Last resort: use it in an answering machine, where the sampled audio     can be very tolerant of bit errors." More on 64-bit Gaming
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/09/1653205

waytoomuchcoffee writes "Valve has [0]announced "immediate     availability" of a linux 64-bit dedicated Counterstrike server,     designed to run on AMD's upcoming Opteron. This follows on the heels of     Unreal Tournament 2003, [1]previously reported on Slashdot. Gamespy has     a [2]related story up on a presentation of the future of 64-bit gaming     (sponsored by AMD) at last week's Game Developers Conference. As Intel     is in [3]no hurry to make the jump to 64-bit desktops, this leaves AMD     to court the gaming market."

Why SCO Needs to Go
http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/03/08/1340236

uninet writes "It's clear to any long term observer of the community     that this means exactly one thing: SCO has not been able to succeed in     the Linux and dying UNIX businesses and is now seeking an alternative     way to bring in profits. The U.S. as a second-class Linux citizen http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/03/02/1343204

  • By Robin 'Roblimo' Miller - Here's a quote from an article at The Economic Times of India: "Some PC manufactures such as HP sell PCs without software giving the option to chose an operating system to customers from the home segment. Others like Compaq are choosing to load Linux, the free operating system on to their computers." Why aren't U.S. citizens given this same choice?
