Bottom line, the great majority of users do not believe they are breaking the law. Only 9% feel there is anything wrong with their actions. With 40 million Americans identified as active file traders this is indeed stirring information, though not surprising. Another stat, 73% of US downloaders report that their motivation for trading was to sample music for later purchase. You can see the [1]charts and original press release here." An [0]Anonymous Reader writes "[1]DARPA has released the details of a
'[2]Grand Challenge,' with a $1 million prize. The challenge is to
build an autonomous vehicle which can 'navigate on its own over a
250-mile desert course in less than 10 hours.' from L.A. to Vegas,
'without external communication or human control.' The contest is to be
conducted in March 2004, and is open to all comers. Can we get at least
one entry to represent slashdot?" We've mentioned [3]this contest [4]a

Fuel Cells Promised For Next Year
An anonymous reader writes "According to an [0]article in today's New York Times, fuel cells for portable consumer electronic devices will start appearing next year. First for laptops, and later for smaller devices like cellphones. Among the interesting benefits of fuel cells over batteries is the ability to swap cells without having to power down the device." The article mentions the [1]Toshiba cells demonstrated at CeBit, and -- no surprise -- Japan is likely to be the first market for these tiny fuel cells. Commander Keen: 13 Years Later
16977 writes "I just noticed that [0]Id Software is now selling
downloadable versions of its classic titles [1]Commander Keen: Invasion
of the Vorticons and [2]Goodbye Galaxy. Although the game is over 10
years old by now, there is still a [3]thriving community of Keen fans
out there whose interest has not waned. We now have [4]level editors
for both Keen Vorticons and Goodbye Galaxy, unofficial Keen [5]fan
software, and of course the infamous [6]Dopefish, which has by now made
cameo appearances in well over a dozen computer games. However, we have
yet to see [7]Commander Keen: The Universe is Toast, the sequel to the
previous Keen game that was planned but never made. With the original
developers pursuing their own independent projects, it doesn't look
like it will happen anytime soon. But in the meantime, die-hard Keen
fans have been getting by, not unlike Farscape fans after their show
was cancelled."

Linux System Security: The Administrator's Guide to Open Source Security Tools, 2/e http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/03/16/2355211 LogError writes "Choosing "Linux System Security" for a title of your book is surely a pretentious step. But usually, when someone picks this kind of name for a planned publication, he or she is sure to deliver the quality readers expect. I'm satisfied to say that, in this case, the authors do provide the level of information suitable for the book's title." SCO-Caldera v IBM: Conectiva Rejects SCO-Caldera's Linux-Related Allegations http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/03/16/0533228 An Anonymous Reader writes "SCO-Caldera's Complaint belittles and insults Linux developers, the Linux kernel, GNU/Linux, Linux distribution providers -- in essence the entire GNU/Linux and free software community." Techniques emerge for speeding simulation with Linux http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/03/16/0529216 Linux-based workstations can provide a significant Verilog simulation speedup over more expensive Sun Solaris workstations, but only if the Linux workstations are carefully chosen and properly used, according to engineers who shared their experiences in the latest (March 14) E-Mail Synopsys Users Group mailing. Q&A: Sun's Neil Knox weighs in on blades, Linux and strategy http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/03/16/0526253 Although it's among the market leaders in the low-end server business, Sun Microsystems Inc. has in recent years been known much more for its success at the high end. In this interview with Computerworld, Neil Knox, executive vice president of Sun's volume systems product group, talked about his company's recent blade-server product launch, its emerging throughput computing strategy and Linux. Debunking the Linux-Windows market-share myth http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/03/16/0524246 There are dozens of reasons why people have underestimated how quickly Linux has been grabbing Windows' market share. Windows starts out with a false boost and maintains its illusory market share even as it gets replaced by Linux. In 2004, don't be surprised when Linux overtakes Windows to become the main focus for developers. PCQLinux 8.0 (Aquamarine): A "super" distribution http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/03/11/1252203
Java and Vim
Demian L. Neidetcher writes "This is a short tutorial on using Vim with Java. It isn't comprehensive. If you've been using Vim to work with Java you probably have a few things working, this tutorial helps you get familiar with some Vim settings that let you become more of a power user. We cover quickfix, gf (to jump to different files), calling ctags from Ant, code-completion and some other features."
LindowsOS 3.0 Review
Anonymous Reader writes "A review of LindowsOS 3.0 that doesn't take on the hype surrounding this distribution. Read it at OSNews.com."
GNOME 2.2 Gains Muscle and Polish
One of the cardinal virtues of open-source software is its penchant for preserving choice. It's no surprise, then, that there's more than one good option available when it comes to the desktop environments through which users interact with Linux and similar operating systems.
