Do Privacy Fears Allow Terrorism?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/04/0526238

carbon3C writes "[0]Privacy advocates are luddites, says Heather     MacDonald, a lawyer at the Manhattan Institute. She says we should shut     up and let the government do what it wants. Our government only wants     to protect us, and would never misuse technology. How do we send a     clear message that non-luddites (conservative and liberal) are     concerned about privacy precisely because we do know so much about     technology?" Leaving your front door wide open is a great idea, until     someone you don't know walks through it. Links

Interview with Jay Michaelson of Wasabi Systems http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/04/0425235

Gentu writes "The main commercial company behind NetBSD is [0]Wasabi     Systems. The company has contributed advances and big chunks of code to     the open source project, while they do offer a boxed release of NetBSD.     However, their main business for the company is the embedded market and     NetBSD is marketed as an embedded OS. [1]OSNews talked to the Vice     President of Wasabi Systems, Jay Michaelson. Linux in the embedded     market is also discussed."

Complex Language Support for PDA's?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/04/0240213

Do you need help?X

Jasin Natael asks: "What PDA's/Smartphones, etc. support complex     languages in addition to more 'standard' languages? I'm a student of     Japanese and am looking for a new PDA or smartphone that operates in     English, but supports complex character sets. Input is a plus, but it's     really needed for Contacts, Notes, Websites, and incoming E-Mail at a     minimum. Would it be easy to add support to a Linux PDA (Zaurus) or     Pocket PC for this? What about right-to-left languages, like Hebrew and     Arabic?"

Pendulum Clock with Atomic Precision
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/04/0137210

[0]u19925 writes "Now you can get [1]atomic clock precision out of your
grandma pendulum clocks. Here is how it works: There is a camcorder     fitted inside the clock which monitors the pendulum swing. It has an     atomic clock signal receiver. It compares the pendulum swings with the     atomic signal hearbeat. The camcorder also has an arm. If the pendulum     clock drifts, then it uses its arm to push or pull the pendulum to make     correction." It's not an April Fool's joke, but it is rather     impractical.

Information Patents in the US and Europe http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/04/0112214

Over_and_Done writes "[0]First Monday has an article up discussing the
[1]differences in information process patents between the US and
Europe. The author mentions that the United States reform is too     focused on process reform, arguing that they should be instead focusing     on what is and is not patentable (i.e. Business Method patents). He     also states that Europe is choosing to instead follow a different     track, and make the process a little more restrictive, resulting in a     rift between the US and Europe. The article raises a lot of interesting     facts that I was not aware of, including the incident where the US     threatened to walk out of the [2]WIPO [3]meeting because the proposed     treaty did not 'mandate patents for all fields of activity.' The     author, although critical of the policies on both sides of the pond     states that the rift is in some ways healthy, as it encourages an open     debate and requires people to look at the patent issue from many     different angles."

The Googlewashing Of Our Language
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/03/2327239

[0]KIondike writes "[1]The Register talks about how a term ("Second
Superpower") coined by the anti-war culture suddenly got radically     neutered and altered by [2]a weblog that a lot of people link to.     Searching for the term on Google now brings up his blog and other     people talking about his blog for the first several entries. Can     Google's power to give information to the people be misused and     perverted? This only took 42 days." First the widespread usage of     "googling" to mean web searching, and now this. RIAA Moves Against College-Network Fileswapping http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/03/2312220

[0]pazu13 writes "The [1]RIAA is [2]taking action against college
"Napster networks". It's suing four network operators, two at
[3]Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute, one at [4]Princeton University,
and one at [5]Michigan Technological University. Don't know where this     is going, but I'm afraid it might get significantly harder for humble     college students such as myself to sample an artist's music before     going out and buying a disc... my speed across the network is     ridiculously faster than when I try to access outside sources." Gameboy Advance Clone Superemulator
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/03/1530224

[0]Aluminum Tuesday writes "During a raging internal debate over
whether to fork out for the new [1]Gameboy Advance SP, I came across     the Korean [2]GP32, a handheld console that looks superior to the GBA     in every way. It's capable of [3]emulating the GBA, Super Nintendo,     Commodore 64, etc. plus there's a [4]SCUMMVM engine for [5]Monkey
[6]Island games and a [7]Java VM. Seems to have a [8]huge online
[9]following. It runs its own OS, and there are programs capable of
playing divx/mp3 files, though there's also a [10]Linux port on the     way. Not too [11]expensive either. (99UKP / 149USD) That's a UK     supplier; they ship worldwide, though I found this more expensive
[12]American supplier too. (179USD)" Gotta catch 'em all!

Recent security flaws highlight need for vigilance http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/04/02/1655255

  • Lee Schlesinger - Open source security is looking a lot like Microsoft lately. Last week we heard about a Linux kernel flaw that could allow non-privileged users to gain root privileges. This week the problem is in Sendmail. According to CERT, "An email message with a specially crafted address could trigger a stack overflow" that "could allow an attacker to gain control of a vulnerable sendmail server." Is it time to re-examine the notion that ...
