More Thoughts On How to Wire Senegal
An anonymous reader submits "Last month Slashdot published a story on the [0]Peace Corps' plans to wire Senegal. Now [1]Peace Corps Online has [2]published an article by a volunteer who taught computers in West Africa for two years who recommends that the White House's [3]Digital Freedom Initiative abandon the Western paradigm of '[4]a computer on every desk' and borrow a lesson from telephony in third-world countries. Since a residential telephone line is a luxury item in West Africa, the 'communication center' has flourished as a private business even in the smallest of towns where it generates profits while sharing the high cost of telecommunication among the whole community. This user model coupled with deregulation of VoIP can be the key to implementation of computer technology in poor countries." Links

Linux On Unmodded Xbox, Improved
An anonymous reader writes "It looks like pSyCo from [0]XEmulation.com
Has found a way to boot Xbox Linux Live on an unmodified Xbox with
nothing but an Xbox and Linux PC (no memory card of any kind, etc).
Also a guide to using this method to flash your Xbox's onboard TSOP
with the bios of choice, making the Xbox modded without an actual
mod-chip. $5 to rent 007 to mod my xbox sounds nice =) Check it out at:

were scheduled to give a talk at [0]Interz0ne II on security flaws
they'd found in a popular ID card system for universities. It's run by

Researchers at Purdue have developed a [0]pumpless liquid-cooling system that removes nearly six times more heat than existing systems. The trick, it seems, is in the tiny bubbles. IBM next month will extend the reach of its Directory Server and Directory Integrator across additional Linux hardware platforms when it adds versions for the IBM i-Series and p-Series servers.
Improve Linux performance
Anonymous Reader writes "Performance breakthroughs seem to come in two varieties: easy and hard. That's no platitude; the boundary between the two is surprisingly clear. Although in some cases it has taken considerable genius to realize their first application, they're easy to understand. The other kind involve careful measurement, specific knowledge, and a fair amount of tuning. Good programmers can operate in either the "hard" or "easy" mode. ...
Phoenix's New Name: Firebird
Anonymous Reader writes "mozilla.org's Phoenix browser has been renamed to 'Firebird'. 'Thunderbird', the proposed future name for the Minotaur mail client, has also been approved by the lawyers."
The Big Cheap Chance
At Fry's Electronics, a California store chain, you can buy an elephant's memory's worth of disk space--a 120-gigabyte hard disk drive from IBM/Hitachi--for $113. Welcome to the Cheap Revolution! The sum of this revolution is greater than its parts, as you'll see. AMD Unveils RDK For Communications Access Equipment Apps http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/04/14/2214243 AMD has just taken the wraps off a new Access Equipment Reference Design Kit (RDK) for developers of a wide range of access equipment, including data- and voice-enabled wireless access points (WAP), gateways, and router-firewalls.
eCos 2.0 Breaks Out of Red Hat Red Tape
Free of the shackles imposed by Red Hat Inc., maintainers of the open-source eCos real-time operating system said in mid-March that version 2.0, now in beta, could be generally available around April 15. The new version will add an all-new bootloader with remote debugging and full POSIX compliance, giving it the ability to run many Linux and Unix applications with just a recompile.
Linux Casts Shadow Over Sun
Sun Microsystems has changed its mind on Linux more often than a 16-year-old flipping through outfits. Yet another shoe dropped at Sun with its announcement at the end of last month that it will be killing its Sun Linux 5.0 distribution. Novell Drives Open, Cross-Platform Computing at BrainShare 2003 http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/04/14/201206 Delivering on its promise of a world without information boundaries, Novell made a series of announcements today at its annual customer conference around new solutions to help customers move to open, cross-platform computing quickly and cost effectively. Tuning and Optimizing Red Hat Linux Advanced Server for Oracle9i Database http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/04/14/223212 Anonymous Reader writes "This procedure is a step-by-step guide with tips and information for tuning and optimizing Red Hat Linux Advanced Server for Oracle9i."
Open source starts licencing ripples
Growing interest in open-source software could force vendors to change their licensing tactics. S2 Intelligence managing director Bruce McCabe says vendors can no longer squeeze customers as much as they once did.
