Slashdot
Parallel Universes Are Real
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/14/238217

It's in Scientific American, it must be true. This month's cover story:
[0]Parallel Universes. "The simplest and most popular cosmological
model today predicts that you have a twin in a galaxy about 10 to the 1028 meters from here." That number's a lot bigger than 10 to the 101.42 meters, which are the farthest observable objects in what we call our universe. And anyway, twin or not, anyone outside my light-cone is dead to me. That's just a rule I have. If you're skeptical of the multiverse, go read our discussion of a similar article from [1]two days ago.

Phoenix and Minotaur Get New Names
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/15/0137251

[0]blazerw11 writes "[1]Phoenix and [2]Minotaur have been officially
[3]renamed to Firebird for the browser and Thunderbird for the mail
client. Interestingly, they're both named after cars I often see in my neighbors' lawns. At least these cars were pretty fast before they were put up on cinder blocks. Personally, I like the names and the browser is great. I'm writing this with one of the last Phoenix Nightlies." Links

The 69/8 Networking Problem
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/14/2249203

[0]jaredmauch writes "A number of networking providers who receive
address space from [1]ARIN have been having problems with their recent IP space allocations. This is a result of outdated filters that applied a few years ago during the boom time of the net, but have not been updated to reflect the current state of the network. Here is a paper that documents some of the [2]problems this filtering is causing providers."

Slashback: Folding, Cursing, Exporting
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/14/2017251

Slashback tonight brings updates and clarifications on the odds of Apple Computer buying Universal Music, the Evil Bit RFC, and more, including Niels Provos' reasons for moving his cryptographic research tools off-shore.

Building a Town-Wide LAN?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/14/2218236

[0]The Mainframe asks: "My town ([1]Hanover, NH, home of [2]Dartmouth
College, the [3]Dartmouth Medical School, and [4]Dartmouth-Hitchcock Hospital, non-college population approx. 9K people, double that with the college) is conducting a feasibility study on building a town network. They'd like to deliver fiber to every home within town limits. This fiber will carry (certainly) the internet and (probably) cable-like television programming access. They're estimating that it will cost $40 per month per household. I just filled out and returned my survey (one sent to every Hanover household) in which they asked a number of questions like: 'What would your primary use of this service be?' and 'Would you be willing to pay $40 a month for this service?'. What reasons, other than the obvious benefit of having fiber to one's house, can you think of for making this kind of commitment to the infrastructure?

More Thoughts On How to Wire Senegal
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/14/2158244

An anonymous reader submits "Last month Slashdot published a story on the [0]Peace Corps' plans to wire Senegal. Now [1]Peace Corps Online has [2]published an article by a volunteer who taught computers in West Africa for two years who recommends that the White House's [3]Digital Freedom Initiative abandon the Western paradigm of '[4]a computer on every desk' and borrow a lesson from telephony in third-world countries. Since a residential telephone line is a luxury item in West Africa, the 'communication center' has flourished as a private business even in the smallest of towns where it generates profits while sharing the high cost of telecommunication among the whole community. This user model coupled with deregulation of VoIP can be the key to implementation of computer technology in poor countries." Links

Linux On Unmodded Xbox, Improved

An anonymous reader writes "It looks like pSyCo from [0]XEmulation.com Has found a way to boot Xbox Linux Live on an unmodified Xbox with nothing but an Xbox and Linux PC (no memory card of any kind, etc). Also a guide to using this method to flash your Xbox's onboard TSOP with the bios of choice, making the Xbox modded without an actual mod-chip. $5 to rent 007 to mod my xbox sounds nice =) Check it out at:

Flaw Delays Shipment Of New 'Canterwood' Pentium 4 http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/14/1745258

[0]bigal3du writes "[1]Hardware-Unlimited has posted new information
from Intel that they will be delaying the shipment of the new Pentium 4 3Ghz with an 800Mhz FSB. An Intel spokesman contacted Hardware-Unlimited early this morning to let the publication know that performance "anomolies" have been discovered, at the last minute, in validation testing and the processor will be temporarily delayed for shipment. Full details on [2]Hardware-Unlimited.com Forums..." ninenet points to this [3]PC Magazine article which explains the things that characterize the new chip and also mentions the delay. Links

Blackboard Campus IDs: Security Thru Cease & Desist http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/14/1846250

On Saturday night, Virgil and Acidus, two young security researchers, were scheduled to give a talk at [0]Interz0ne II on security flaws they'd found in a popular ID card system for universities. It's run by Blackboard, formerly by AT&T, and you may know it as [1]OneCard,
[2]CampusWide, or [3]BuzzCard. On Saturday, instead of the talk,
attendees got to hear an Interz0ne official read the [4]Cease and Desist letter sent by corporate lawyers. The DMCA, among other federal laws including the Economic Espionage Act, were given as the reasons for shutting down the talk (but -- update -- see the P.P.S below). I spoke with Virgil this morning.

Tiny Bubbles Key to Cooling Crazy Hot CPUs http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/14/1445220

Smaz writes "With future CPUs expected to generate as much as four times the heat of today's processors, wicking away that heat remains one of the biggest engineering hurdles in the biz. Researchers at Purdue have developed a [0]pumpless liquid-cooling system that removes nearly six times more heat than existing systems. The trick, it seems, is in the tiny bubbles. Improve Linux performance
http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/04/14/1514251

Anonymous Reader writes "Performance breakthroughs seem to come in two varieties: easy and hard. That's no platitude; the boundary between the two is surprisingly clear. Although in some cases it has taken considerable genius to realize their first application, they're easy to understand. The other kind involve careful measurement, specific knowledge, and a fair amount of tuning. Good programmers can operate in either the "hard" or "easy" mode. ...
