NASA Wires Chips With Nanotubes
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/16/0034246

carstene writes "SpaceDaily reports that NASA has come up with a way to
[0]wire microchips with nanotubes instead of copper interconnects.
Aparently this could keep Moore's law a reality well into the next decade."

Robotic Massage, Anyone?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/15/2250248

[0]Migraineman writes "[1]These folks have built a small robot designed
to [2]walk around on your back. The website includes a short video of the machine roaming around. There's [3]another that's suspended from the ceiling and performs 3-D solid mapping of the person beneath. Warning - the website contains 'artsy' stuff, and doesn't include technical tidbits. Dang."

AOL Sues Spammers
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/16/003256

mabu writes "Prompted by what they're reporting as over eight million complaints and the result of over a billion inbound junk e-mails, according to [0]this press release, America Online is now stepping up its battle against spam by initiating five lawsuits against over a dozen companies and individuals. Let's hope this is the beginning of a more aggressive effort on the part of ISPs to prove to their users that they are seriously interested in addressing this issue, and at its source. I've maintained that this has never been a freedom of speech issue. It's more an issue of mail relay hijacking, forging header information, and exploiting third-party networks and resources. Perhaps if more ISPs took action, we might see the backbone providers doing so as well?"

Interesting and Educational Web Pages for Children? http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/15/2139257

[0]watashiwananashidesu asks: "I am a teenager with no siblings and a a
good number of little cousins. Being something of a nerd, I'm incredibly popular with these cousins, especially the ones who are 8-11. Recently, when my first cousin (female, 8) was over, I began a collection of links that she might enjoy--sites that were appropriate and fun. Now that the Cold/Flu season is over, I can expect more visits from my first, second, and third cousins, and I'm left with a dismally small collection of links (eight, to be specific) for them to peruse. Also, the few I have are unsatisfactory; they're mainly corporate sites like [1]Barbie.com and [2]Lego.com with a few non-corporate games mixed in. None of the sites have any educational value, least of all about the things that I really want to expose them to--science, math, literature, and computers. In fact, I especially need sites that will teach them about computers, so that they'll be able to better keep in touch with me, when we're all older. What are some good sites I can bookmark for my cousins that are: educational, appropriate for children aged 5-11, (mainly three boys and two girls), fun, not a security threat, non-corporate (though this last one is optional) Also, how can I make my friends/protégé(e)s/cousins make the best of what few links I have or manage to find?"

Cryptographers Find Fault With Palladium http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/15/2230252

FrzrBrn writes "Whitfield Diffie and Ronald Rivest raised concerns about Microsoft's Next-Generation Secure Computing Base (formerly Palladium) at the [0]RSA Conference in San Francisco on Monday. They are (naturally) concerned about vendor lock-in and having computers turned against their owners. See the [1]story at EE Times." Links

DOS Attack Via US Postal Service
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/15/2027225

Phronesis writes "Bruce Schneier [0]reports in [1]Crypto-Gram about the slashdot-inspired [2]Post-office DOS attack on SPAM-king [3]Alan Ralsky. More interesting, Schneier writes, is a recent paper on
[4]Defending against an internet-based attack on the physical world,
which generalizes this attack and discusses how it could be automated and how one might defend against it (you can't stop it, but you could make it harder to effect). From the abstract of the article: 'The attack is, to some degree, a consequence of the availability of private information on the Web, and the increase in the amount of personal information that users must reveal to obtain Web services.'" Top Physicist Advocates Scientific Self-Censorship http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/15/186203

spamania writes "The [0]San Francisco Chronicle is running this article about a new book by Britain's astronomer royal, Sir Martin Rees, that advocates [1]restricting scientific research in certain fields in the interest of public safety. In "Our Final Hour", Rees lends a sober, respectable voice to the oft-irrational ranting about nanotech, biotech, and other fields."

overview of how OOP works, and then goes on to a brief outline of the possible successors to OOP such as Aspect, Pattern, and Extreme Programming. Also a [2]pretty picture of OOP Spaghetti." Links

Review: QCast Tuner for PS2
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/14/1925250

With TiVo's release of the much anticipated [0]Home Media Option (anticipated by me, anyway), I renewed my quest to find a way to integrate my computer's media files with my TV. TiVo's solution is not an option for me, because I don't have a Series2, and even if I did, the TiVo solution doesn't work with DirecTV units (for now, anyway). So I looked into something I saw a few months ago on ThinkGeek: [1]QCast Tuner for PlayStation 2.

CEO conversation: Jim Curtin of Win4Lin publisher NeTraverse http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/04/10/1824235

  • By Robin 'Roblimo' Miller - Jim Curtin, President and CEO of Win4Lin publisher NeTraverse, says, "We're seeing people who've moved to Linux workstations and are finding they have a 20% gap on average between the functionality they're used to in a Windows environment and what they get in Linux." Curtin claims Win4Lin is the best way to bridge that 20% gap; that with Win4Lin it is almost as easy to upgrade from Windows 98 to Linux as it is to ...

Clinton Goveas writes "The free software movement has formally existed since 1983. Followers of it's philosophy have been distributing their code under GNU licenses since 1984. Why then did a group of free software enthusiasts set out to establish an Open Source Initiative? And why is it still going strong today?

PROOF That File Trading Sells DVDs...Sort Of http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=03/04/16/0359228

Anonymous Reader writes "MP3newswire.net has an article that mocks the RIAA's claims that file trading is hurting the record industry. The music industry has been wailing that the proof comes from the direct correlation between the rise in file trading and the fall of record sales. OK, guess what? DVD sales are up 61% this year alone. So the author has used the exact same logic (a direct correlation between the rise in file trading and the rise ...
