Must-See Films at L.A. Anime Festival
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/20/2054258

[0]May Kasahara writes "The [1]first annual Los Angeles Anime Festival
is being held May 2-15. Among other films screening at the festival are     Studio Ghibli's [2]The Cat Returns (making its US debut), Memories, and     all nine episodes of [3]The Animatrix. However, the film I really want     to see is the trippy-looking [4]Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat In Space. More     information, including a full schedule of events, is available
[5]here."

Revolution is not an AOL Keyword*
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/20/1823214

[0]pdw writes "[1]Revolution is not an AOL Keyword* is an entertaining
piece of prose, which has been [2]floating around the blogspace for the     past month. In reinterpreting Gil Scott-Heron's [3]The Revolution Will     Not Be Televised, Eddan Katz has given us quick worldview, common to     most Slashdoters, and of course reminds us of what is most important to     all, to go out and enjoy life!"

Online Newspapers Turning a Profit
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/20/180256

Do you need help?X

[0]PCOL writes "The [1]Asia Times reports that after years of losing
money, [2]online newspapers are starting to pay off. The New York Times     has gone from losing $7.5M on their site in 2001 to an $8M profit in     2002. The new profitability is attributed to changes in the technology     for delivering ads which make it possible to embed advertising in news     stories and tie the ads to articles related to reader's interests     without resorting to pop-ups and banners. As print newspaper readers     age and die, no new readers are replacing them and one survey found     that 46 percent of all journalists believe that within 15 years their     publication will only be available online." Rabid TiVo Fanaticism
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/20/1758248

surfacearea writes "The New York Times [free reg] is running an article     that, without sounding like over-the-top blatant product placement
[0]discusses the reasons why TiVo owners are at times frighteningly
fanatical. Personally, I won't bother to find out first hand until they     slap a recordable DVD drive in there." Links

The Rise and Fall of Napster
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/20/1714214

[0]Jedi Paramedic writes "[1]Boston.com has an interesting story about
the rise and fall of [2]everyone's favorite file-swapping service. Also     the subject of a new [3]book by Joseph Menn, the story goes into great     detail about the unfortunate-but-heroic Shawn Fanning and his     reluctance to admit that his uncle, who in the end masterminded little     more than the lining of his own pockets, had taken advantage of him.     From getting screwed in the original 70/30 split with his uncle to his     uncle's refusal to loosen his iron grip on the company even at the     expense of its very being, the article (and the book) go a long way in     chronicling the rise and fall of Napster, and crediting Shawn for not     airing the family's dirty laundry. An interesting and well-written     read."

Easter Humor

[0]sohp writes "The longest running Internet cartoon of all, [1]Dave
Farley's Dr. Fun, has [2]this laugher on some tasty case mods for the     Easter season." cojoco sends in a webpage covering the [3]secret     dangers of bunnies, and we here at Slashdot would like to make a public     service announcement that humans have a responsibility to care for     their pets even if they chew through computer cords. linuxwrangler     writes "It's Easter and the 50th anniversary of the [4]Marshmallow     Peep. The fine folks at [5]Peep Research have found them to cooperative     test subjects. People with too much time on their hands (tm) have     braved copyright complaints to create [6]"Lord of the Peeps, FOTP" and     we can't forget NASA's brave [7]peep-o-nauts. Happy easter." Links

Getting Rid of the Disks
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/20/1443250

[0]Kneht writes "[1]Dan's Data has an interesting [2]article on what it
would cost to get rid of your HDDs and replace them with SSDs because     hard drives suck. Several aspects are examined, such as required UPS,     compact flash, etc. Read the article and you may get a new appreciation     for your lowly 7200rpm drive." Funny, I was just thinking that I should     start using 120GB disks as my removable media. Links

James Cameron's Live Action Battle Angel Alita http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/04/20/143207

[0]Dean Siren writes "Moviehole.net [1]reports that James Cameron wants
to direct a live action [2]Battle Angel Alita movie. Cameron says, "The     issue is will it be the next film, or will it be the one after the next     film? That's really all there is to it at this point. We've done a     tremendous amount of design for the film, we're fine-tuning the script,     it's just a matter of time." As for the movie itself, "Motorball might     find its way more into the second film - I definitely want to do more     than one film. I want to create a world and a character that can go     through at least one more film, possibly more. And that's not just for     the classic financial reasons, it's just that I think there's a     possibility for a real mythology here, so I feel that this is a good     canvas to do something big that's got more scope." [3]UK Anime and
[4]The Z Review are also reporting." I enjoyed the original Battle
Angel Alita. It left me feeling like so much more could be done with     it. It'll be interesting to see what comes of this one. Links

Security is a major part of the foundation of any system that is not     totally cut off from other machines and users. Some aspects of security     have a place even on isolated machines. Examples are periodic system     backups, BIOS or power-on passwords, and self-locking screensavers.
